I mean... After a discussion on one of the threads here, I booted up a few clips online of First Contact... The holodeck, the deflector, the Jeffreys tubes, Cochrane's rocket--I bit the bullet and just watched the whole thing. It's the most vividly cinematic of the TNG stories, I feel. A great film. I appreciate how much effort was put into giving the Enterprise that same feeling of solidity you get from real naval cruisers. The weight of the bulkheads. The encounter on the ground, too, has that wonderful sense of history being made under your feet. Life as we've never encountered before. This will make Gene Roddenberry spin in his grave but... I don't really care. I like Star Trek when it embraces that naval feel. My favourite episode of TOS is Balance of Terror, which is a WW2 submarine movie moved to space. TWOK is similar in the battle between the starships in the nebula. I think adding that solid naval feel really grounds it and allows the story to go off and do its thing because there's a sense of realism given to the whole thing by that recognisable naval atmosphere.
First Contact is a really good, enjoyable movie. It's a good war movie, the Ahab stuff is well done, the idea that it's a historical story - still set in our future... and it's got the zing of a really enjoyable sc-fi movie. And really funny at times. Love it.
It also fits one of Trek's most enduring themes -- balancing the duty of an officer to their crew vs. the needs/wants of the individual behind the uniform. The needs of the many and the one. That was one of the most interesting themes behind Wrath of Khan and similar stories in that era. The captaincy wasn't just lonely, it was downright alienating and how Kirk and Picard connect with their crews is fundamentally different for that division. I find a lot of those ideas have more in common with C.S. Forester, Bernard Cornwell and David Weber's brand of storytelling. The Horatio Hornblowers, Richard Sharpes and Honor Harringtons, which have a rich sense of the characters' internal lives. I can see it in Balance of Terror, actually, now that I think about it in the ready room conversation with Bones: "Don't destroy the one named Kirk." I need to go back and do a marathon of these. I've been meaning to since reading the DC Comics that slip between the original films, but it's been far too long. It'd be good to see them with fresh eyes.

I began revisiting 'The Empire Strikes Back' on DVD during Saturday. I will continue doing so over this month as I rarely watch movies at home in full. I can now call it my favourite movie of all time.

Jumanji (because it popped up when I opened Prime for breakfast). I loved the original movie, had not been interested in this one. Zero expectations. This is so much better than I thought. And besides the ridiculous premise, yes, these guys can act (well, we all knew about Karen Gillan....). Jack Black as a phone addicted pretty girl? Yes. And there is Rys Darby! He is an amazing fit. And he always reminds me of my days back in NZ (because he was, like Sam Neill, all over the advertising).

Unhinged - Outside of the fact that it has Russell Crowe in it, I went in to this blind and, whilst I will say that it's not something that I would probably rewatch regularly, yeah, as weird as it might sound, I think I had fun with it... Werewolves Within - "They're cute together, I'd ship it, she's probably the werewolf..." Don't know if genre-savvy or just a (slightly) obvious film, that kind of 96minutes. As someone who played 'Werewolves Of Millers Hollow' a lot at university, I found this a whole lot of fun...

Condorman. Made an effort to track down the DVD. This was one of my favorite movies as a kid! Having been raised on James Bond since I can remember (my dad was a great fan), the movie had always appealed to me. I can still remember me on school holidays (primary school), on a hot day, sitting inside, eating ice cream, trying to cool down and Condorman was on- afternoon kids TV. It was like Christmas had come early. Back then I dreamed I would be Lazer Lady! The movie is just as ridiculous and silly as I remember, and it is just a loving persiflage of James Bond movies, even down to the villain with the eye patch/ metal eye. I still think it is wonderful. No idea why everybody seemed to hate it back in the day. But maybe I am just seeing it through nostalgia glasses.

"Star Trek V". Don't see what all the fuss is about. S'alright. Prefer to watch this than any of those dreary Next Gen movies.

And later, we get some great action scenes, lots of interesting costumes and Spock as the gunner of a Klingon Bird of Prey.
I have always loved this movie.

Black Widow - 'Could maybe have been a couple of minutes shorter overall, but that was a pleasant enough way to start a two week holiday off from work... Nat's a fan of 'Moonraker', why am I not surprised?
Fast & Furious 9 - Well, that was as OTT as I was expecting... Outside of the ride at Universal, the only other film of this I've seen was 2006's 'Tokyo Drift'. How do you go from drag racing in Japan to this?! What's next, a crossover with 'Jurassic Park'? Oh...

Oh... google all the memes about "family".. it's the best, so OTT much like this movie. U really only need the 1st one because it was a faithful plot to plot remake of "Point Break" with Keanu and Swayze.

This man stars & produces he plans two more films were they travel back meet Moses & race against the red sea while part 2 has them go back to the Jurassic era & battle dinosaurs with a Dom Vs T-Rex smackdown.

Sometimes a audience isn't ready for something different, this was a little wacky for it's time but has since become a cult classic. Same with Flash Gordon it didn't do that well upon release but now it achieved cult classic status.

Black Widow - Should've come out five years ago, and might've had a bit more impact as a result, but it's so good to have an MCU film on the big screen again. It's refreshingly standalone, moody, plenty of character work and some great set pieces. The end product is so much different than the trailer, and all the better for it. It's Scarlett Johansson's film, but it's Florence Pugh who steals the show. The pair of them are so good, as is Weisz, Harbour & Winstone.
It's probably the most violent of the series to date, I loved the first 15 minutes and I really enjoyed having a title sequence of sorts towards the beginning, rather than at the end of the film.

Malcolm, an Australian film from 1986. It’s a bit dated in some of its attitudes but in other ways it feels ahead of its time. For those who haven’t seen it, it’s a story about a man, displaying some ASD behaviours (and based on the director’s brother) who fills his house with a lot of gadgets made from toys or cast-off machine parts (I got a real Wallace And Gromit vibe from his house, despite being a few years too early) who gets fired from his job working in a tram yard and is forced to take in a boarder who happens to be a convicted bank robber. Hilarity ensues.
