Samaritan, above average but I guessed the twist straight away. Yeah, my big critisism. They signposted it too early/ too obviously. I am not sure if they intended the audience to know from the start, or if they were just condescending with the information because they thought the audience was a bit thick.
Cannot make my mind up what to think.
Otherwise, I really liked the movie.

Pan's Labyrinth. Yep, it's great. That violent act scene was brootal in the cinemas, a couple jobs ago we used to get free movie passes and this one was well worth it. !

Tad The Lost Explorer & The Curse Of The Mummy - Don't look at me in that tone of voice, I was breaking up the journey to the theatre I volunteer at yesterday! See How They Run - A fun 91minutes, that I would happily recommend, & would happily re-watch every once in a while Brahmastra; Shiva - Not a favourite out of all the Indian films that I've seen this year, but I enjoyed it pleasantly enough

Zu Warriors At Magic Mountain starring Yuen Biao, this film is completely batsh.t insane but very entertaining, this film inspired John Carpenter to make Big Trouble In Little China.

Meet the Robinsons (2007)
Always had a soft spot for this entry. And I do find it rather unfortunate that it seems to have been forgotten over the years.

Joker I rewatched this with a couple of people. They found it to be a bit much, in terms of just how bleak it was. Maybe I'm weird because I find that sort of thing very relaxing. It's certainly a well-crafted film. And very unique tonally in the Super Hero genre. DC's best stuff has come from them mostly shirking the Shared Universe thing, and just letting their film-makers make a damn film.

Nobody A bit cliche, but it's hard not to enjoy Bob Odinkirk doing a John Wick by way of Home Alone.

I got the Criterion boxset back in August, but only now found time to sit down and watch the first Lone Wolf and Cub movie.
Not really sure what to think of it. You can definitely tell it's based on a manga, as -- like most manga adaptations -- it leans very heavily into camp. The main antagonist, for example, is meant to be this really old man... but it's just a dude in his 30s with long white hair. Most amusingly of all, the "hero's" obligatory super-skill... requires him to be submersed in water to use. No, really. He crouched down and puts his sword underwater, lifting it up to strike. It's nuts.
I can definitely see why these films became the cult classics they are. The final battle scene is just... absolutely crazy. Not the best choreography, but the cartoonish level of dismemberment is really over-the-top and a lot of fun. If it were more realistic, it'd be grotesque, but it's so exaggerated -- and clearly faked -- that it's a much more enjoyable degree of hyper-violence than what we get in modern, gory jidaigeki.
As for why I'm not entirely sure what to think... well, all of the characters are pretty reprehensible. The movie opens with the hero, Oogami, murdering a small child -- something he never demonstrates any remorse for. There's some ironic potential there, I think, left very much untapped. When he decides to abandoned his privileged life and embrace the "way of the assassin," there's no real weight to the decision -- because he's never been anything else.
It's also super regressive with its handling of women. There are three in the film: the first is fridged almost immediately to kickstart the plot; the second is violently raped and murdered while the Oogami stands there and watches, impassive; the third is a prostitute who gets publicly raped by Oogami himself -- which the narrative then uses to try and depict his great "samurai virtue" because he was able to both achieve an erection and bring the woman to orgasm. Oof.
Though I suppose there's an argument to be made that, with a premise like this, it would be irresponsible to frame any mass-murderer in a heroic or otherwise positive light, no matter their motives. But in practice it just leaves me thinking, "every one of these people needs to die."
Might need to rewatch the sublime Twilight Samurai (gotta love Yamada Yoji) as a palate-cleanser before moving on to the next one.

The Woman King - Loved this. Cracking choreography and a brilliant set of performances from Viola Davis and Thuso Mbedu. Very much looking forward to seeing more from her.

Last night I saw 'Clerks 3' on the big-screen... I never thought I'd see the day where a Kevin Smith film would bring me to tears -!
