Curious. I'll be keeping an eye on this.

Best case option would be full remaster from scratch with new effects replacing the original which would need replacing as the original effects were added after it was edited onto tape. With the question of where the original film cans are for this and how dismissive the restoration team of a blu Ray release I feel it's unlikely.
Most likely option. Standard upscale job. Similar to seasons 1-4
Least likely option. Sd blu Rays. Some bands have done this so it's possible but I hope not.
It's worth noting seasons 1-5 of red dwarf was made on tape and are getting the blu Ray treatment next month. Could be a sign of what kind of blu Ray release we are getting

Wonders can be done, even for material shot on video with film elements. Star Trek: The Next Gen is the most obvious example but realistically this won't be given that level of care on bluray for purely budgetary reasons (which is why we've always assumed it won't happen)- it would take some real TLC to do anything more than upscale that Vancouver-set video quality that almost every North American genre show of the 90s had from Sliders to the X-Files.
Red Dwarf's HD release project is happening, according to Grant, due to interest in the series from Japanese broadcasters. I'm not sure what mandated this one. I can't see much, if anything, new in the special features. The Revisitation special edition was jam-packed.
That said, I'm a sucker for blurays so if it comes out...day 1 purchase for me.

The effects quality on the movie is nowhere near as good as seasons 1-4, a standard upscale would just look awful. I'm holding out hope for redone special effects and a rescale.

Wouldn't that be way more costly than a simple upscale? Steve Roberts of the restoration team over at gb has pretty much dismissed a rescan. Noting "anything other than an upscale would be unlikely in the extreme".

Well, I can only hope this is the second in a plausible range of future classic who blu-rays. I mean, Spearhead From Space looks pretty lonely (it'll be even more odd having a lonely Blu-Ray TV Movie).

I don't know about anyone else, but i've always found that there's an interesting symmetry between those two stories, from the Doctor practically falling out of his TARDIS on arrival, to getting shot, questionable X-rays, wandering around a bit confused in a hospital gown. I know that Rose was partially inspired by the Auton scenes, but i wonder if the TV Movie was at least influenced by episode 1?

I'd like them to release Caves Of Androzani and some other stories on Blu-Ray. It'd be fun if they did the RTD era as singular releases at some point soon, too.

Oh don't worry i was just going wildly off topic with an observation, don't mind me. Yes i agree, i would like a few other stories on blu ray, especially The Deadly Assassin and I've always really wanted a special edition with optional CGI effects like Day of the Daleks to perhaps give Gallifrey a grander feel.

Yeah, Deadly Assassin would definitely benefit from something like that, as it would make the story even better and it's already a classic.

I already have the standard DVD - I have no plans to pick up the Blu-Ray.
I'd rather the six titles I don't have on DVD get re-released.

I'll pick up the Blu-ray if it's the TV Movie in true HD and not a cheap cash grab by the BBC for the TV Movie's 20th anniversary.

Don't hold your breath.
It's interesting that Red Dwarf is just over a week away from bluray release and we don't know specs, don't know special features and haven't even seen a cover for it. If the same is true for the TVM, I don't hold out hope we'll know much until release. Even then, it'll be a brave person who buys on spec as there's a real chance that this won't look much better at all than the Revisitation release.Indeed, if its a rush job, given the limitations of the source, it could look downright bad. Since it seems even people like Steve Roberts and Chris Chapman didn't know it was coming, I'd say the chances of anything new, features wise are low at best. Which is fine as the 2 disc set does well, extras wise. Comparisons to Spearhead will be made since they're the only ones in the format but the TVM's video elements mean there's no comparison. Hell, even if Spearhead on blu wasn't an improvement (and it is, it looks great), then it would still be a must have just for the two new documentaries about Jon and Carrie on it.
I'll hope for the best but expect less to keep hopes in check.

I think it's best calling it patchy at best. Series 1-4 series 5 series 6 and of course day of the Doctor all had problems in some capacity.

At least they've not had the audacity to put that on disc yet. I'd KILL for Buffy and Angel on blu but they'd need to be completely re-done.
