I've not got many worries about Class. It looks fine and it's got a really talented cast from the handful of names I know. I think some people are expecting this to somehow replace Doctor Who for them this year, or fill a void when it's clearly a different thing while some have criticised it since inception and are just entrenched in their disdain becaise this show is somehow seen as taking up Doctor Who's slot which is nonsense. It's also on a digital platform so the expectations ratings wise will be nowhere near - not even close - to expectations of Doctor Who which gets primetime broadcasts on the biggest channel in the country. Time to temper expectations. This is not Doctor Who and the marketing reflects that.
That said, I don't get DWM's decision to not have it as the cover. I would agree entirely with the decision on the basis that it wouldn't "sell" if not for the fact that Capaldi is actually in it. There could easily be a cover story that features Capaldi large and centre with the cast in smaller profiles or the background but the story itself is a feature on Class.

Hmm... not exactly a vote of confidence I'm sure this month's cover will be related to Power of the Daleks anyway. No, that would need to be next month. The whole reason people like Siobhan are bringing Class not being on the cover up is that John Barrowman is on the new cover rather than the new cast or Capaldi. By the time the next issue comes out Class will be approaching it's 5th ep so the window will clearly have been missed to give the show any rub. Power Of The Daleks may well be the next cover as that comes out on DVD the week after the next issue but it's not this month's cover.

Class isn't Doctor Who, so until it airs and people start watching it DWM are probably just playng it safe. They do have a magazine to sell after all.
DWM cover or not, the people who want to watch Class will watch it, and those that don't, won't. It won't affect the online ratings.... I'm not sure I'll even bother with it, but I might if I'm around and doing nothing, but the return of TWD next week has got me way more excited when it comes to TV programmes.

I also don't pay for a UK TV Licence, so the BBC don't want me to watch it! Of course, I can get BBC3 online by using a VPN etc, but whether I watch it or not won't affect it's ratings. Also, I don't care about spin-offs; I'd rather the BBC concentrated on the real thing and pumped more money in to Doctor Who.

Yes, and having The Doctor, in a brand new adventure, on the cover is surely a bigger draw than John Barrowman shilling for the 10th anniversary of TW, which used to have its own magazine so wasn't even a big part of DWM's history. No-one is arguing that the kids from Class should be there alone but Capaldi being in the show on the week that the mag comes out makes it so very easy to have him on the cover. I think Tom citing sales appeal only makes sense if Capaldi wasn't in it. He's made plenty of baffling editorial decisions in the past though, and I doubt he's on Colin Baker's christmas card list, but this one is relatively minor.

Maybe The Doctor only has a small part in the opening episode, so he didn't justify a cover? (I don't know obviously.) But yeah, it is only a minor niggle more than anything else.

I could imagine the Doctor turning up for the last twenty minutes of episode one and returning in the last five episodes of Class episode 8 (perhaps in a scene that somehow ties into The Return of Doctor Mysterio). It would be so cool if they do a MCU situation with characters in Doctor Who referencing events in Class and vice versa.

I wonder if one of them is a Zygon. Be the perfect place to explore the refugee factor.

Has there been much of a backlash agasint Class? I'm not online much these days. I was excited from day one! As for the lack of promotion, isn't that part of the game with a series like this? It's a teenage Doctor Who spin off (which is going to be frank about adolsenence, including sex). It's audaciousness, it's bold, it's unexpected, it's different, it's Doctor Who, but it isn't, surely the long reveal is the best way to get people talking, particularly in a gap year?
I share Davy's bafflement over the cover. It's a new adventure featuring The Doctor, seems like a better sell then a no longer airing TV spin off. I enjoy DWM, but it's become rather...personal at times, often to it's detriment.

At least he didn't sit on the fence or give a non-answer!

It would be more professional if he had. If I wasn't a regular reader of DWM, I'd be put off.

In certain circles of fandom (ie. Moffat haters*) there was, but that was to be expected. It also didn't help that on the day of the announcement a lot of hype was building up about what the announcement could be and many people ended up being disappointed. Equally, lots of fans are very enthusiastic about it and I think that's more important. *okay, this may sound hypocritical as an outspoken "hater" of the Moffat era, but you get the point.

I'm watching this mainly for the LGBT representation lol. Gotta take what good representation you can get with Moffat as showrunner.
I think Moffatt does try. Jenny and Vastra came out of compliants about the lack of LGBT representation and let's not forget Susan the horse from A Town Called Mercy! The bisexual tweet was incredibly misjudged, but let's not forget the guy is a upper middle class straight guy who is trying to learn.
Is he perfect? No. But, he does clearly does care. I'm not saying he's above criticism, but I'm sure there are plenty of other showrunners who wouldn't have bothered to continue RTD's LGBT legacy or done worse in the name of family TV.
