So Doctor Who has been off-TV for a year and when it returns, how does Steven Moffat decide to mark the Christmas Special? Not with a returning character or a big name or a major enemy returning such as Missy. No: he goes for superheroes. I mean, I like superheroes but in the Christmas Special? Seriously? Why not leave it for a normal episode of the show and use the only episode this year to do something big for maximum publicity such as bringing back a fan-favourite character or casting Dame Maggie Smith as a guest companion? Because, having been off air for a year, a returning character won't bring in much more publicity than "ooh look! New Who!" And in anything apart from the xmas episode, superheroes would be even worse received. I disagree. Returning characters in Doctor Who always get the tabloids talking. Superheroes would be better received in a normal episode IMO because they have no connection to Christmas (which is what the Christmas Special is supposed to be about).

This could be fun. Doctor Who hasn't gone into superhero territory very often (there was one of the BBC Audio Hornet's Nest/Demon Quest stories and Izzy from the DWM comics sometimes mentions comic book stuff). It's also different from previous Christmas specials.
And could it have hurt to mention "Christmas special" in the thread title?

And how do you know Moffat will soon be unemployed? I imagine he has a future gig of some sort lined up. But even if he doesn't, it's really none of our business. Paul is a notorious Moffat basher. Deliberately watches the episodes in his era to nitpick about plot holes.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

Because Moffat will soon be unemployed. He's gagging for a Marvel/DC job. I'd actually like to see that tbh. Me too: Moffat writing for superheroes would be fantastic!

Exactly: Christmas stories are mostly turned up to 11 in the fun department and I like how they all seem to tackle different genres in their execution. Looking forward to this.

I kind of like Grant's crab mask. It reminds me of Kyle Rayner's stylised mask in Green Lantern (he's an artist, so is more visually distinct from the standard GL uniform). The New York setting is a nice change from previous specials. It's usually either Britain or an alien planet (Voyage of the Damned was a technological Titanic, so not quite in either category), whereas NY is instantly recognisable yet somewhere the Doctor doesn't normally go.
I can imagine Edna Mode's reaction to the costume.

This will either be very good or very bad, I'm hoping we get more depth to the drama & a more serious tone than last year's travesty, Matt Lucas returning as Nardole doesn't inspire my confidence but I'll wait to i seen the episode before passing judgement.

The trailer doesn't show a great deal but I wouldn't say what it shows is particularly bad, just a bit run-of-the-mill rather than anything that looks like a classic episode of the show. I don't think this is going to be like The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar or The Zygon Invasion/The Zygon Inversion.

I think it looks intriguing, and it is good to see, even at the beginning of his final year, SM trying something new with Doctor Who. There will always be unneccessary negativity of course - previously, this forum has been refreshingly free from that kind of thing. I hope that doesn't change.

I think many forums will become more optimistic after the Christmas Special. Many of us expected Captain Jack to return this year so there is an under-lying disappointment and bitter attitude towards it not happening.

I'm sure there will be plenty of optimism after the episode has aired However, to be honest, you are genuinely the only person I've seen who actually believed that Jack would be in the Christmas special, and judging by other people (on this forum) no one else seems to be all that disappointed, as no one really got their hopes up. Of course, there are probably other people less vocal who feel the same way as you

Has anyone else noticed that the "G" on the logo has something that looks like an "I" behind it. It's not 100% clear but it does raise some possibilities...

Oh, I'm sure there are lots who are the same. Jack is a very popular character. The thing is, IIRC, that rumour could be traced back to a single unsourced comment (which I'm pretty sure stemmed from Barrowman being in Cardiff - which we later learned was for Big Finish). I'm sure there are people who would have been pleased to see him back - myself included - but I wasn't expecting anything this Christmas.

I'm really optimistic about this and I'm glad we finally get a superhero episode. I shall wait to see the episode before I make judgement, but the mere idea of a Superhero in Doctor Who makes my heart sink, I'm hoping Moffat is somehow bluffing, but the idea leaves me dismayed right now.

Well, Santa himself was in a Christmas episode a couple of years ago so anything is possible!

Didn't BF do a superhero a couple of years ago in a Fourth Doctor story? And Titan's most recent Ninth Doctor story basically had superheroes. And, honestly, the Doctor has always been a bit of a superhero too.

Most of the "trailer" is just behind the scenes stuff, so it is hard to tell how good the episode will be. It should be good though. New York is a pretty Christmassy place around the Holidays, and Superheroes can work as a one-off in Doctor Who. Also, I love the title. It is just so ridiculous.
