I really hope a volume 3 is incoming, because the quality of these past two sets has been superb. It's kind of funny, but on paper to me each time one of these was announced it has sounded like the Sixth Doctor had drawn the short end of the stick, being paired with 'new monsters' that personally I wasn't a big fan of on TV, and that seemed pretty one dimensional, but both times the actual story in question has ended up being my favourite amongst what was already a very strong set. It's almost like those Big Finish people know what they're doing... I would certainly welcome another set, even if they had to mix and match Doctors with the same monsters from the first two sets. The Sixth Doctor v. The Carrionites was the story I was looking forward to most and I wasn't disappointed! Old Sixie in a 'word-off' with the alien 'witches' sounded great from the start and then what Simon Guerrier did with it was better still.

I liked the Vashta Nerada stories the best.
I've never been a big fan of the Racnoss or the Carrionites, and I found the Racnoss voices a little annoying on audio. But after listening to the Behind the Scenes tracks, I decided I'll give this box set a second listen at some point.

Didn't think this one was as good as the first box set. The 4th & 6th Doctor stories were the best. The Racnoss one was quite boring & I found the 8th Doctor story a bit silly with giant Vashta Nerada etc.

Another brilliant boxset!
I listened to the Fifth & Sixth Doctor stories a few weeks ago, but in Saturday I was travelling in the car so I took the opportunity to hear the Fourth & Eighth Doctor adventures back to back. When I got home I felt that I had to watch Jurassic Park! So I did! The Lost World was yesterday and Jurassic Park III is tonight!
When I relisten to the Vashta Nerada, which I am already looking forward to doing I think I need to have some nights free to watch the Alien films!

This may be the best release of the year! Night of the Vashta Nerada Worth the money by itself. Tom is on fire and such a coherent Cast its Who meet Jurassic Park Empire of the Racnoss Hell hath no Fury like Giant Spider-like people scorned The Carrionite Curse Lovely verbose but at the same time nuanced performance from Colin and a story point inadvertently serves as a touching tribute to a recently lost great Day of the Vashta Nerada If Night of was DW meets Jurassic Park then Day of was DW meets Alien Regards mark687 Ha! Now I have finished this boxset I am reading though this thread and it is good to see others had the same take a ways!

After listening to the two VN stories in CDNM2 I wondered if there would be scope for a story set between them, but without the Doctor. As those stories evoked films like Alien and Predator I did think it might be interesting to hear something along the lines of AVP where a monster that is more used to doing the terrorising, find themselves on the other end of that terror!? My story suggestion would be… The Daleks have sent a combat squad to investigate why the Doctor has left a warning message regarding Funworld. Once on world they discover they are unprepared to fight this new foe and begrudgingly join forces with a human group that believe they have a way to capture the Vashta Nerada.

It seems a great shame that we will never get a Jago & Litefoot story where they meet the Vashta Nerada.

Continuing to play catch-up on releases I'm way behind on, finished this set off this morning.
Bit of a mixed bag, I thought.
Night of the Vashta Nerada was, without reservation, awesome. There is no part, no scene, no character, no acting, no direction that I didn't enjoy. Just a stellar episode.
Empire of the Racnoss...was a valiant effort. It was well-written and directed, everybody's acting was spot-on, and the sound design was excelent, but I struggled a bit here because I just find the way the Racnoss speak is so annoying. I don't mean this as a criticism of anybody involved in this story, it was all very well put together and everybody played their roles to perfection, it's just something that I struggle with because I cringe at Racnoss voices.
The Carrionite Curse blindsided me because I usually love everything Colin Baker appears in (even the ones that other people deride as bad or boring), so I was very surprised that I found it so slow and weirdly structured. It was moving along so slowly I was having trouble staying awake and glad it seemed to finally be over, but then I looked at the app and saw there was still another 20 minutes to go.
Day of the Vashta Nerada was fun though, wasn't it? Fleeing the monster in the restrictive environment while compatriots get picked off one by one--quite reminded me of a lot of other action/horror movies, like Aliens or Predator. I liked the very compassionate angle of the human scientist as well, really gave the story some much-needed heart.

I don't think Empire of the Racnoss is getting the credit it deserves. It makes for a fantastic parallel to The Runaway Bride, with the Time War being the divide. The Fifth Doctor attempts to save the Racnoss from the warmongering Time Lords of old. The Tenth Doctor is happy to let the Racnoss die, following the destruction of Gallifrey in the Time War. A sort of PTSD, if you will.
It also harks nicely to Time Crash which highlights the similarities of the two Doctors, whilst showing how the events of the Time War changed the character.

Mmm, it's an interesting take on the "you are your own worst enemy" theme that Doctor Who likes to explore quite a bit and a rare insight into the Dark Times of Gallifreyan history. Mind you, the Empress in The Runaway Bride was rather eager to use the surface of Earth as her own personal larder. Hardly the noblest of motives, Mestor (who fed the carcasses of Jacondans to the starving population) and the Tractators (who slaved human beings to their machinery) both had similar designs on the peoples they subjugated. I got an interesting twinge of deja vu with the Racnoss here, it felt a little bit like what transpired with the Rachni from Mass Effect.

I'm a bit late to this party but I'm jus catching up.
Night of the Vashta Nerada - an excellent start to the box set with Dorney capturing the character and voice of the 4th Doctor perfectly. A very clever and imaginative story that kept me guessing. One of Toms best in a while I think as the 6th series of 4DA's was a little underwhelming to me.

Empire of the Racnoss - I went into this not expecting much as people didn't seem to be loving it and be very unimpressed with the voice of the Racnoss. I was pleasantly surprised with it to be honest. Some good lines and a good back and forth story so you don't know who to trust and their motives.
Plus it was an interesting look into Gallifrey history and interesting to see that the 5th Doctor got some stick from fellow timelords just like the 8th doesn't involve himself in the time war.
I also didn't find the Racnoss voices at all annoying.

I played this for my boys a few weeks ago when we drove up to Connecticut and back. They loved the Vashta Narada stories and enjoyed the Karrionites, but they also seemed to have a hard time with the Racnoss story. They hated the voices, and Hunter (16) basically said that he didn't care enough for the situation between the Racnoss Queen and King and was bored with most of it.

They ought to have had Colin say "hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia" at some point.....or at least it's shorter more acceptable version

It was surprising how this set worked out for me - I really enjoyed it but the monsters seemed a bit awkward in places again. I would never have guessed after thinking the Weeping Angels managed a good transition to audio, but the Vashta Nerada not quite as much. I hadn't quite realized previously but for something so capable of a low profile, they were still very visually interactive in the TV series because I was very busily trainspotting for them, where as here it suddenly occurred to me I sort of had to just wait for someone to announce them.
I also had a little trouble taking the Carrionites seriously as if they didn't quite seem to fully register as either an alien threat or a supernatural one, but really no complaints given Colin's role and performance having easily made the story still worth the price of admission.
I too found the Racnoss annoying but I took it as rather the point (it's not as if I seem to often hear "I could listen to Daleks / Ice Warriors / Zygons read the phone book all day") - I think they probably should be annoying, and for me it served as a constant edgy reminder of dealing with something alien enough to defy any expectations on short notice.
I don't think anything in the story actually surprised me (although it still seemed particularly suspenseful) and perhaps it was better that way - I think one of strengths of the story might well have been Scott more or less just letting Racnoss be Racnoss? So for me, the Racnoss turned out to be the most monstery monsters in the set, in addition to the story being what I thought was an interesting situation for the Fifth Doctor.
Also, I got a really good laugh out of an old trope making a comeback (just long enough to give me another reason not to miss it very much) in the second Vashta Nerada story.
I'm really going to miss this series, both because I think there's been some fantastic writing and performances, and because it was just a totally amazing thing to have four Doctors in one box set. Also, I think Big Finish might have (understandably) had yet to fully hit their stride with the series, and it's a really shame for it not to have run long enough for that to actually happen.

The Carrionite Curse - i have to say i am a bit disappointed in this one. Colin was outstanding in it and it was tailor made for his Doctor however I never thought the Carrionites were much of a threat the first time round to be honest and don't really think they deserved a second go. Plus the whole thing reminded me of that episode of Blackadder III when they burnt the first ever dictionary.
