I continue to appreciate these releases having the Lost Stories design.

The previous three stories were all "adapted by Marc Platt", but this one bears the legend "dramatised by Marc Platt". INTERESTING MAYBE Perhaps just more accurate? 'Adapted' implies that the story already existed in another form, like a novel or a TV script. As I understand it, PHP are brand new storylines by Philip Hinchcliffe which Marc Platt then dramatises in close collaboration with him. A new incarnation of the classic producer + writer combo which made the Hinchcliffe / Holmes years so very special; it wasn't only Robert Holmes with the ideas of course.

In fact, yes it IS a four-parter and the website got us excited about 240 min running time without cause. Total story length 1hr 58min Music suite 13min Behind the Scenes 1hr 6min Grand Total 197min, so unfortunately the "Number of Discs:3 Duration:240'" listing on the website is indeed an error. (As usual in this world, the price was definitive! Cheaper than a PHP six-parter, because sadly it wasn't. But we know it's the quality that counts. The four parter 'The Devil's Armada' is my favourite PHP to date. Although that could change later today... )

I hope that it justifies being a slightly more expenseive download than the main range.

Has anyone listened to this one yet? I'm tempted to buy but I didn't love The Genesis Chamber and the lack of a trailer is strange.

Finished part 1. I am liking it so far, very 70s with some interesting ideas. Although, Ancient Alien Artifact is an overused DW trope.

If it helps, I enjoyed the lost stories with Tom and the first set with hinchcliffe, but hated genesis chamber. This is spooky who and quite good so far! Hope it sticks the landing!

I loved it. I love Tom in these because the goofiness, while still there, is toned down a lot. The pacing was fantastic so I'm really glad that it wasn't longer. Were there some re-used ideas in this, absolutely. Do I care? Not at all. It was so well done. Although I think I wanted even more of Leela with the Vikings.

That's music to my ears! I liked the sound of the story, and spooky '70s-era Who is definitely my favourite style :-)

Has anyone listened to this one yet? I'm tempted to buy but I didn't love The Genesis Chamber and the lack of a trailer is strange. I listened last night and for me the PHP range is back up to full speed with this release. (I too had mixed feelings about The Genesis Chamber; there was a lot to like but I thought it was perhaps an episode too long for the story.) The Helm of Awe
Philip Hinchcliffe and Marc Platt take us back forty years to a 'contemporary' 1977 setting - but in a place where Time is - unusual; Shetland but no more the 'real' Shetland than 'Terror of the Zygons' takes place in the 'real' Highlands, with the more eye-catching elements of Shetlandic culture and environment woven cleverly into one small island and its people... Something has been lurking around the Isle of Bothness for ages past and it's certainly left its mark... The writing is excellent in an era-authentic story packed with incident, action and mystery. Without excessive spoilers, we have: ancient artefacts, alien power, Time and more times and a Time Lord to understand them, pseudo-Vikings with attitude, a warrior of the Sevateem with more attitude, a laird with more inheritance than most, a repellent lurking (spoiler), something menacing under the sea, merry dancers in the sky and a lot of sheep... Tom Baker's high-energy performance was the standout highlight for me -this is the Doctor as action hero as well as Time Lord genius, getting hand-to-hand as well as hands-on with alien and ancient technology, in a story where Time seems fragile and only the mind of a Time Lord can see the way through... With the help of his warrior companion of course; the Doctor and Leela make a wonderful combination and just wait for Louise Jameson to give 'the war cry of the Sevateem'! Brilliant, as always! I'd recommend this story to every fan of the era; as a final incentive, if you go for the download during this initial period it's reasonably priced for one of this premium range. An exciting and entertaining adventure with one especially chair-arm-gripping cliffhanger; the 'old masters' in top form. I don't believe the calendar on my desk; last night it really was 1977...

Two episodes into this and yes, I find it a lot more compelling than poor old 'The Genesis Chamber'. I'm enjoying this a lot - it is both different from The Fourth Doctor's television stories, but reassuringly familiar too - probably due to some really good dialogue, lots of jeopardy and terrific performances, not least from Tom Baker and Louise Jameson. Leela seems to be in a huge amount of strife in this so far, and Louise sounds just the same as she did 40 years ago.

I probably shouldn't put this story under the microscope until I've had another listen, I think I was a bit distracted and out of sorts while listening. It definitely registered as a great story and great performances nonetheless, and I very much enjoyed the supporting cast also. I think very highly of The Genesis Chamber and I'm sure I liked The Helm of Awe just as much - I'm just not quite sure if the other worldly (alien) stuff seemed to almost get glossed over or if that was the point where I got distracted and the parts I should listen to again specifically. More likely I missed something rather than something was missing. (No issues with the misprinted duration, if 2 hr 4DAs went for $14.99 I'd have no complaints).

Loved it, 2 hours of brilliant dramatic, suspenseful storytelling, Tom Baker & Louise Jameson are both just amazing in this & i prefer the longer story format.
Gets a 9/10 from me.
