I liked it! The Pilot won't go down as a classic Doctor Who episode, but it was a fun romp. What more could you want from Saturday night TV?
.....an episode that goes down as a classic?

Every episode can't be a classic, so I am happy with good entertainment.

Every episode can't be a classic I know, I know. But you did ask what more could I want....

Well, hindsight is a wonderful thing. "The Deadly Assassin" is vaunted as a classic but didn't get that kudos on broadcast so...we'll see.

Never listen to the word of the fans! I don't disagree with them, I think it is the worst of series 14. Maybe...maybe...it's better than Hand Of Fear but I've no great love for Deadly Assassin, nor for most Gallifrey/Timelord stories after it - when things became stuffy and overblown, and they wear the ceremonial gear as everyday wear.

I like most of Deadly Assassin, but I found the whole sequence with Goth and the Doctor inside kf the matrix to be really boring.

Both now and a kid. It's The Most Dangerous Game and Goth drowning the Doctor has got to be one of the most brutal cliffhangers on television. Voted bottom of that year's series poll, wasn't it? Honestly, that doesn't say very much. 'Tis a very good season all round. We are, after all, talking about a run of stories that began with The Masque of Mandragora and ended with The Talons of Weng-Chiang here.

I'm with you. It's all pretty dull and then the Matrix bit manages to be even duller.

Still, at least it's not Planet of Evil.

Mandragora - there's another dead boring one! Still, at least it's not Planet of Evil. What dear departed Liz Sladen's favourite story? The one with set design so good that it was photographed extensively and used for the BBC's training manual for several years? I have no words...

Even if they look nice. Planet of Evil and Deadly Assassin are probably the over-rated stories ever.
(And if she's that dear, she deserves to have her name spelt correctly;) )

Elisabeth Clara Heath-Sladen then. :3 Hmm... Hell Bent is boring. Deeply, painfully, unabashedly boring. And if you want overrated, I don't think you can go further than The Day of the Doctor. Planet of Evil and The Deadly Assassin on the other hand, are significant enough that they are still being talked forty-one years after their respective broadcast. I can count at least three generations that were glued to the screen for both during the last extended family gathering. The results there speak for themselves.

Actually that "still being talked about years later" thing is always utter balls when used in comparison to stories recently aired. Whether one liked specific new stories, one has no idea whether the same can be said of them until the time comes.

Very true, but all the same, I believe the room full of near eight or so people still stand as a fairly good argument. If only by sheer force of numbers and me being super lucky timewise that happened a week ago. Anyway, rest of the season. Looking forward to it. Genuinely hope things continue to improve.

I can count at least three generations that were glued to the screen for both during the last extended family gathering. The results there speak for themselves. Planet Of Evil was 92nd out of 241 in the last DWM poll so I'd say that shows even to fans it's not quite as well regarded as sometimes we think, it's verging on the average. Even The Deadly Assassin missed the top 20 so while it's certainly still very popular, in the top 10%, it's not quite top tier even among us. Looking at the 1998 and 2009 polls...it's the same rough story for both serials allowing for a fall due to new Who classics that have come along. So maybe if you really love Assassin and Planet and think they're that good they should be top 10 - you could argue they'e underrated and deserve to be top of the pops. ;0 As it stands, I'm not quite sure Lis Sladen loving something means we have to take that into account, nor that the Beeb were impressed with sets - I just listened to Russ Enoch praising The Sensorites quite a lot on the commentary, it really didn't make me change my mind on the story because Ian likes it. As Bobod says it's hard to gauge some of the newer stories yet - Hell Bent has never been part of polling for example wheras Day Of The Doctor was #1 in the last poll, a position I think it might not now we're not in 50th mode any more. So, I guess you can make a case, since fans voted it the best ever story, that even if you think Day Of The Doctor is only the second best...it's still overrated.

Lis would be pleased I share her opinion of Ark in Space. I don't like it much either.

Yeah, it's all relative and I have to admit that the reference to Lis was me being coy. I don't really ascribe to the idea of an objectively good story, I know people who think that The Caves of Androzani is too violent for television and The Talons of Weng-Chiang is a bore. Don't agree with either sentiment, but then, it's not really my loss. I enjoy it either way and my world is made all the richer for it. No, what I think I'm experiencing right now @davygallagher is shock.
