I throw down my knightly gauntlet in defence of the honour of Robot of SherwoodGadzooks! ‘Tis Robin Hood– who doth not exist! Perfectly done as comedy, not to be taken seriously for a nanosecond, a great laugh and only just fitting within the ‘Doctor Who’ Universe, but who cares for once? As Robin tells the Doctor: “I’m just as real as you are.” Touché!I'm a fan of this episode. I thought it was good fun.

The Doctor testing the Merry Men, playing with Tropes of the legend like Tom The Tinker and the fight on the bridge and the glorious scenes with The Doctor and Robin arguing in prison. It's the only Doctor Who story I also own "by other means" on top of the DVD and bluray because the one floating around online has deleted scenes on it not released officially. There was a scene cut which has a beheading featured (because of world events) but more importantly that scene also revealed the Sheriff had been augmented with robot tech and prolonged his fight and death scene. I think it's one of the eps that leaked pre-Series 8. Plus Ben Miller!

I think that's been the real strength of his era, even if there are stories like Time-Heist and In the Forest of the Night where you find yourself saying " Farscape/Space: 1999 did it better." We had the hotchpotch style of Season 19 for his first year, fan-driven Season 22 for his second and [insert where applicable] for his third and final. The experimental nature of each season means that there is always something to enjoy. It's divisive, just like his Doctor. Agreed. Love Capaldi, saddened he didn't do a fourth series because I'd love to see him with Chibnall rather than Moffatt. It's not so much that I wanted to see Capaldi under a different showrunner (I've thoroughly enjoyed the majority of his episodes so far, and I'm not a huge fan of Chib's previous Who efforts) I just wanted to see him stick around a bit longer and break the three series and done rule, three series give's the actor a beginning middle and end and allows a lot of character development, but with the 12th Doctor having such a clear character arc from emotionally detached cranky uncle learning to love himself again in Series 8 through to the slightly kooky grandfatherly lecturer in Series 10 I really wanted to have one more series of with Capaldi fully settled into the role, with an experienced mellowed out 12th Doctor having fun. Series 8+9 very much felt like an origin story for the 12th Doctor with the Doctor mellowing out over time (and the writers trying, not always successfully to figure out how to pitch this development-Capaldi was great from the start i.m.o, but the writers didn't always seem to have a clear idea of how to shape this Doctor), I'm rather fonder of Clara than some but it's a huge shame Capaldi didn't get his own companion until his third year, he lived under the shadow of Smith's Doctor for too long, perhaps a new showrunner would have freshened things up even more dramatically. It's hard to believe it's already been four years since he was cast (I think the split seasons in the Smith years made his era feel longer than it actually was) and with his end in sight it feels like we've skipped a huge gap in the middle...though hopefully that's a gap BF might explore one day...

There aren't many I'd say I hate, so I probably like a number of hated episodes. :-) I wonder if I should say Trial of a Time Lord specifically? I think I've noticed that not everyone shares my enthusiasm for it, at least, but I do think very highly of it. I like Trial of a Time Lord. My spouse is not so keen on it. I've created my own version of that season with no trial segments in the first three stories. I now just need to add a few trial scenes to the beginning of episode 13 and I may have something watchable. Viewing order when I'm done will be Mysterious Planet, Mimdwarp, Ultimate Foe and then Terror of the Vervoids.

Now, are we talking the framing sequences only? Or the stories during the trial as well? And if so, do you like all of them?

I think it's the season where they consistently nailed his and Nicola Bryant's characterisations. Trial only really suffers in that we get a story where the Doctor turns evil again while the show is under fire (endearing though Mindwarp is in its Flash Gordon ways) and the production values have really suffered from those budget cuts across the board. The lessons of brightly lit sets were not learned. Imagine if Marb Station had been this dark, dusty and ancient looking place with claustrophobic hallways straight out of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Merdeen and his peers with faces like parchment and the Great Doors these enormous steel bulkheads that make it look like the opening to a missile silo. Drathro standing vigil over a communication and control centre that vaults up in an implied cathedral of electronics, like sitting in the chest of some enormous animal. Just as an aside... As a kid, I was convinced before watching the actual episodes that the whole thing was set on Gallifrey for some reason. I think it was because I found the story in a photo diary from 1993 and made the connections myself. The Doctor got rescued from being stoned by the Chancellery Guard (photo of Merdeen and his train guards) while Peri spends some time with some refugees hiding in the sub-basement (photo of Yrcarnos and Dorf).
