Bank holiday weekend remember, with nice weather to boot. Why would anyone go out for leisure when you could stay in and watch great TV like Doctor Who? It was a bank holiday weekend with nice weather, that's the rarest occurrence possible. I'm sure catch-up will balance out those figures.

Firstly, this episode looked gorgeous.
Probably one of the darkest scenes we've had in Doctor Who in a long time when the child got sucked under the ice. The whole episode I was thinking that there was going to be a cop-out at the end where he wasn't really dead, but Doctor Who really did go that brutal. Bill's reaction seemed totally justified to me. Even I was a little bit shocked that a kid had just died on-screen in Doctor Who. The scene in which the harsh reality hits Bill and she questions the Doctor about all the death he's seen was beautifully written, and Capaldi beautifully underplayed it. I'm really impressed with the moral/ethical points that Dollard has raised in both her scripts so far and look forward to seeing more from her in the future.
As for the actual plot, I for one enjoyed the fast pace of this one as we switched around between locations. It allowed the story to develop through the Doctor/Bill's eyes, rather than showing the audience the villain straight up. Also, it's nice to have one of those stories where the monster isn't the villain, but instead the villain is human.
The CGI looked probably the shonkiest we've seen in the revived series though. The monster didn't look great, but some of the effects such as when Sutcliffe fell through the ice were genuinely cringe-worthy.
This series hasn't had a miss yet, and this is the best of the lot.
I can't help thinking that the knocking from the vault is surely too obvious given who we know is returning....

I wouldn't post up information that isn't true.

If I'm looking at the same figures that @paz is, then there's been a consistent 83 Appreciation Index across the last two episodes ( The Pilot and Smile, respectively) despite the drop in ratings. I'd call that pretty spiffing. Plus, I don't think it counts those that streamed it after the fact, the consolidated ratings have yet to appear because it hasn't been a full week since broadcast yet.

Indeed, beautiful work. I'm looking forward to seeing what Mike Tucker and his team have in store for Firestorm.

i shall go against the flow here a little bit and say that i thought the episode was.......meh. Don't get em wrong, it wasn't terrible and was better than the majority of season 9 but still i found something lacking.

Another good Doctor Who episode. The interaction between The Doctor and Bill seems very natural and it's a fun pairing that is very enjoyable to watch as it develops. Capaldi still has that Pertwee-ish-ness about him and he is undoubtedly the best new series Doctor as far as I am concerned. The Doctor really seems to come to life with Bill around this season, compared to the dull Clara. So the chemistry of The Doctor and Bill together make these episodes for me; three good stories so far and nothing bad about any of them. The story itself was nothing special I suppose, and it felt a bit hurried towards the end... but it was still fun. I'm glad Nardole eventually got that tea made too!
So an 8/10 for Thin Ice from me.

I'm not sure I'd describe anything other than his hair 'Pertwee-ish'. Peter Capaldi's more similar to Tom Baker to me.

You need to listen to other people occassionally.

Although he has settled down, you still go from telling stories to children to lamping a racist entrepreneur. You never know what you are going to get. It is one of interesting features of this incarnation. He is not immediately approachable. He is a fascinating mix of intense control and child-like joy and impetuousness. I liked this visit to Regancy England. The episode was better paced than last week. The monster reminded me of the Skarasen; no doubt now reunited with a bunch of hungry Zygons in East Anglia. Again great direction and design helped create a believable historical escapade. It was the scenes with 12th and Bill that once again were really engaging. These two actors work well together and with good writing they bring out both the human and alien perspectives on this adventure. Funniest line goes to Nardole, "I've made some tea. I've put a bit of coffee in, as well, just to give it some flavour."

I continue to believe that the main templates for the Capaldi Doctor are 1 and 4.

It's never the same as watching something as broadcast.
