Come to think of it, I'm not so sure they could pull off the voice these days without it sounding a little silly, maybe another gig for Mr Briggs Wasn't the character a ... {Spoiler} ... hermaphroditic hexapod, which perhaps means it could be voiced by a man or a woman. Funnily enough, it always seemed to me to be masculine, but I can't think why ...

Brilliant
Perfect characterization , fast paced, spot on dialogue and that little bit at the end.

mark687 Absolutely - wasn't it just? If that really was Mark Gatiss's final contribution to Doctor Who (which I find difficult to believe), then he went out on a high. And bless my soul ... {Spoiler} Alpha Centuari WAS in it - voiced, no less, by 92 year-old Ysanne Churchman, who last voiced the character in 1974!! This series has been exceptional. I was slightly less keen on the previous trilogy story than the others, but only slightly. Absolutely loved this, and the trailer for next week (Rona Munro's story, I think?) looks great too. Steven Moffat's last series, and to my mind, his best. Terrific. God save the Queen.

Most enjoyable, nice to spend this warm day with the Ice Warriors. Now I'm off to have an Ice Queen cone.

Pretty good episode. Some decent conflict with the characters and comments on colonialism, the Ice Warriors and their culture were well-portrayed, and the design of the Queen was cool. EDIT: And yeah, that cameo was an awesome touch.

I thought that was great fun (if a tad formulaic), nicely paced, decent balance of action/humour, solid direction/acting and some good dialogue, certainly one of Gatiss's stronger efforts, could easily picture this episode being in the Tennant years. Surprised by that cameo (and amused that it deserved it's own dramatic music). Random theory time when {Spoiler} Missy asked the Doctor if he was alright at the end of the episode...what if she had a inkling he was regenerating soon, perhaps the 'fake' regeneration we saw in the Lie Of The Land was stopped a little too late by the Doctor, what if he is regenerating very slowly without even realizing first? Moffat has hinted 12 will go out in a slightly different way...

Felt it got better as it went on. Ice warriors were amazing. Not too keen on the ending. 6/10.

well that's the way to do doctor who, to please me......almost a perfect episode just not keen on the god save the queen start.....
no daft way to resolve, no resets, no bringing everyone back to life. just good old fashioned storytelling that hit the ground running and never gave up.
nice understated performance by capaldi (why can he not do that all the time), bill great, nardole & missy stuff fine.
loved the Victorian cyberpunk look.
certainly my favourite of this series......I might possibly be my favourite capaldi episode.
and as to the cameo....well that's the monster? that terrified me the most as a young kid........I had a PG tips tea card with it on, never saw the episode which is probably why I had nightmares about it.....
loved it.....9.5/10 for me

Solid episode. Ice Warriors nicely portrayed (Though I'm not sold on the 'ball' special effect), soldiers depicted as slightly more than just red shirts which is always a plus. I took the ending as the Doctor genuinely astonished Missy actually helped rescue him rather than abscond in the TARDIS (also an explanation for why the TARDIS left in the first place seemed missing). .
Also that cameo! So, so obviously fan pleasing but it worked on me so who cares.

A simple story, muddily told with many unnecessary plot threads. It took 20 minutes to actually reach the Ice Queen, which was frustrating, considering she's the focus of the episode. Overall I found it neither particularly good nor particularly bad, just a harmless bit of fluff.
Liked the cameo tho 😁

I'm non the wiser about why the Queen had a change of mind. Or why blokie was deemed a good recruit at the end.
Generally looked good though.
And Invaders for £1.50! One of my favourite stories. What a steal.

"Sleep no more, my warriors..."
Great fun and didn't feel as though they were out of time as so many episodes in this series have done (despite being otherwise brilliant). I think it might be one of Mr Gatiss' strongest scripts for the show yet and it was a hoot!
Loved the pop culture references, especially Bill naming so many films to a baffled Doctor and then drawing a blank on Robinson Crusoe. The Ice Warriors looked terrific and I enjoyed them for the first time ever (never been a fan of them, unfortunately). I was a little baffled by the NASA sequence at the beginning but it was a low point in an otherwise very entertaining episode. I loved all the design nods to the Classic stories as well as THAT cameo.
The TARDIS malfunctioning was odd but I'm hoping that we get an explanation for it soon. And Missy playing the very contrite and worried side to her nature is a real turnaround that there has to be some sort of long game she's playing...
Great fun.

4.5/10 from me. My least favourite of Mark Gatiss's episodes, and I usually really enjoy his. Pacing was all over the place and the vault arc scenes felt shoe-horned in, but I liked Alpha Centauri's cameo and the Ice Queen.

Human volleyballs aside (that was really beginning to annoy me by the end), I really enjoyed that episode!
Depending on how I'm feeling after work (and what time I finish watching ''Return Of The Caped Crusaders"), I'm tempted to give it a rewatch tomorrow evening...

After last week's misfire, simpler and to an extent, unapologetically nostalgic, was probably the best course. Empress of Mars is certainly about as good as a potential John Carter 2 could be, and hits enough pulp sweet spots to carry it over its shortcomings.
