The Dalek Transaction by Matt Fitton An 'action movie' opener in the hot, steaming, guerilla-ridden forests of some Central American republic. It's entertainingly exotic yet familar ground on which to set a UNIT 'action movie' - sinister revolutionaries (sorry, Captain Gonsalves - freedom fighters!) opposing a regime backed by 'Yankee imperialists' and trying to raise money for their cause... by selling alien tech... Lot 1: a quivering green blob of pure hate, all the way from Skaro... I now think of this story as {Spoiler} "' Predator' of the Daleks" and maybe you will too! It's a new twist on a Dalek doing what they do best and the writing and Nick Briggs actually give it individual character - which takes some doing when we know Daleks so well. But obviously not that well - this one will surprise! Great start to the set with the UNIT team each doing their bit to get a win of a sort (I loved Osgood's closing line) - and {Spoiler} there are a lot of loose ends surrounding the mysterious 'Overseers'. It seems these were far more than just your average revolutionaries - and the stories of this set may be more linked than I expected... Invocation by Roy Gill A spooky scientific ghost story with ghosts of all kinds - metaphorical and apparently literal - returning to haunt the UNIT team. For me this one was an instant winner, I'm always up for a good ghost story and the 'ghostly' side of this is very ghostly indeed - even though (as this is the world of 'Doctor Who') we know that a scientificy explanation must be found. And when you want that, who're you going to call? Osgood, ghost-buster extraordinary of course! Once the apparent 'ghostiness' has been busted into science, more ghosts - of past events - are still there and something else too. This is one of those stories that made me shift my perception of it several times; I liked the way that human 'ghosts' of old ambitions were merged with the pseudo-paranormal ones and one friendly 'spirit'... {Spoiler} The mentions and recollections of the Brig.'s opposition to the former project were enough to send a shiver (of delight this time) through this old UNIT fan! Some ghosts are a pleasure to raise. {Possible Trivia Spoiler} There's no similarity beyond a particular room in an old house - and even that may be a total coincidence - but the setting of Osgood and Josh's ghost-busting exploits did (for me at least) raise a memory. One of classic ghost-story writer E.F.Benson's most famous tales is called: 'How Fear Departed From The Long Gallery'...

I really enjoyed this set. I think I've liked better than any of the others, which surprises me to no end. Jemma Redgrave FINALLY seems to feel comfortable with this role on audio. This is her best performance to date. I think I liked the 4 unconnected stories more than a 4 story arc as well. The rest of the characters finally seemed more real to me, not just voices representing a type. All in all, a very entertaining and enjoyable set.

Start what? Did I miss something about a UNIT volume? . . . I will find the nastiest, most painful weapon in the Time War and inflict it upon you. Seriously, it long stopped being funny this time six years ago, and it hasn't gotten any funnier since.

Was not expecting the fourth story to be mainly set in the parallel world. I was thinking it'd be Osgood and Josh fighting an invasion of eye-patch wearing Nazi counter-parts of their friends, not trying to get home after an experiment gone wrong (which nicely mirrors the Doctor's experience in Inferno actually). I was audibly laughing when Kate asked if her counterpart wore an eyepatch, mentioning it was an old family story.

I enjoyed it very much too and it surprised me no end that I enjoyed it more than 'Assembled' - which drew me in to the range with the promise of meeting my old UNIT heroes (and top heroine of course Jo!) But fun though that was, this set was better and the different adversaries for each story gave it extra interest - but there is an arc of a sort and I think we'll soon see it's not over yet... {Spoiler} Remember the mysterious 'Overseer' who (with the Auctioneers) gets a mention in three of the stories and one voice appearance? Sam Bishop is returning with new intelligence about 'the Overseer' as the set ends - do we guess who (or maybe what) it is yet...?

This set was enjoyable enough, but nothing blew it out of the water for me. The Dalek Transaction reminded me a little too much of Dalek, which took me out of the story, but it wasn't bad by any means. I did enjoy the fact that the stories were more-or-less standalone, so I hope they do more set like this (or stories that are only very loosely linked together).

I like the slice of UNIT life feel it has. Not everything can be an epic end of the world or straightforward alien invasion affair. I do want more on the Auctioneers, the dark auction concept has loads of mileage.

Dull question
How does the dalek mutant talk when it's not wired into its case?

I'm just assuming that the auctioneers are Torchwood under its new manager....

Dull question How does the dalek mutant talk when it's not wired into its case? Osgood says that it's adapted, maybe it adapted vocal cords.
