According to many a showrunner, the companion is really the star, "Many a showrunner"? I seem to remember only Moffat saying that, and he was wrong. Wrong? Meh, never been any less than a dual narrative for me anyway. I still stand by the idea that a well written male companion could serve as this male role model that many people are complaining has been lost now.

As for what I want to see in any companion? Inquisitive, adventurous, and always out for a good time. Someone who when faced with a Dalek keeps their chin high and is ready to run. For the next companion in particular, I'd love to see the rare male perpetual optimist. The one who says, "Yes this sucks but we can make it better at least for a little while."

For years I was able to dream of being the Doctor. Now I can dream of being whisked off into Time and Space by her instead and so the companion should be a 49 year old man who should know better.

1. No romance.
2. No super special mystery.
3. Competence, but not smugness or arrogance.
4. As others have said, someone not from modern day London/England.

I think the point about a companion being the real start as some grounds of truth, for sure we are all familiar with "our" doctor concept, but, I also when I recall say Tom, think of Leela, or even Sarah Jane, in fact when I think of Jon I think of Jo etc. I think if you get the match right you could have an interesting dynamic to play with. Personally what about another Timelord as per Tom and Romana. That could prove something not fully explored in the nu who. Again, this is open for debate from the off. The problem with the Timelord as companion thing, is that it makes issues with story telling, the companion is the viewer surrogate who asks "What?", "Why?", "How?", "Where?" but a Timelord would know a lot more of the answers already and it would seem odd a Timelord being as ill-informed as 21st century Earth teen. They'd just do the dialogue differently. Instead of "what are you doing?" --> "changing the polarity of the neutron flow, now leave me alone", you could simply have "ah, so you're doing blah blah blah" --> "yup". I definitely don't recall having any issues with how stories were presented with Romana as compared to other companions. Or, consider, our River audios. She may not be a full-on Timelord, but she's very competent, and you still have a sense of what's going on when she's working with a Doctor.

Actually, have we ever had two male companions before? This could be a good opportunity to try the dynamic out. "Och, did he noo ken the times we helped the Doctor together? Fighting yon Macra beasties - and on Atlantis - and the Cybermen on the Moon! (Och the Piper, the Piper!!)" "Don' look like it me old haggis! Blimey, some geezer at the Beeb wipes yer tapes and they forgets you me and Pol was ever wiv the Doc! Typical, innit!" "Now Ben, don't be so rude! It was a long time ago, you can't expect everyone to remember us all the time." "Alright Duchess, keep yer 'air on! Come on Jamie, let's see where 'e's landed us this time..."

Andrew Lee Potts as an awkward nerdy character, like a mix of Connor Temple from Primeval and Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park.

Hello again.
Yes, has to be at least one male companion or a male/female duo like Tegan and Turlough.
Now as to type of male companion. Does anyone remember The Professor from radio comedy 'Old Harry's Game'. It starred Andy Hamilton as Satan who delighted in torturing new arrivals to his realm. James Grout, who was also Chief Superintendent Strange in Inspector Morse, played The Professor.
At first the Professor completely bewilders Satan by refusing to acknowledge the evidence of their own eyes. Later they agree a wager that the Professor has to prove that all humans have some redeeming features. Satan challenges Prof. to find any goodness at all in the terrible selfish man called Thomas.
A new male companion could be a scientist. Initially, sceptical of the Doctor's claims. Professor Green is intrigued enough by the Doctor to venture into the TARDIS and set off on a voyage of discovery.
Potential Professor Green Richard Ayode, Ben Wishaw, Rory Kinnear, David Harrington we are spoiled for choice with some excellent actors who would be brilliant foil for the Thirteenth Doctor.

Don't think they should be companion Budget wise if nothing else - no way does Ben Whishaw, Richard Ayoade or Rory Kinnear work for the kind of money Who pays the companion role.

Well, perhaps but it's not related to anything to do with the gender - a big leading name like those names isn't going to take the companion gig any more than, say Gillian Anderson or Suranne Jones would if it was a male Doctor and a female companion. The companion gig isn't the main role and it's not going to pay as much. The names above certainly don't need the career boost. Neither did Catherine Tate, of course, but Series 4 was the highest budgeted Who series and benefitedfrom being made before the licence fee freeze so there was more in the coffers.

You know what I'd love? An eccentric but sweet, older gentleman in the vein of Sapphire and Steel's Mr. Tully.

Actually, have we ever had two male companions before? This could be a good opportunity to try the dynamic out. I think it's got legs, but NO ROMANCE, please. I'll add a caveat. No romance with the Doctor, please. Actually, have we ever had two male companions before? This could be a good opportunity to try the dynamic out. "Och, did he noo ken the times we helped the Doctor together? Fighting yon Macra beasties - and on Atlantis - and the Cybermen on the Moon! (Och the Piper, the Piper!!)" I fell off my chair dying with laughter. Of course! Ben, Jamie and Polly, I should've realised!
