We're not sure what the reason for the change is, but we suspect the delay in rolling this out is to give BBC America an opportunity to broadcast Shada in their own good time, and introduce the item to North America audiences that way. And then tie in the DVD release with that event. The folks at the BBC might even want to put it up for a brief run in theaters in the USA (and possibly Canada), as they have done in the past with some Doctor Who specials." If that is the case, then why do they have to wait until September? There wasn’t any delay with Power of the Daleks. BBC America just aired that when it came out. I linked to the site that posted it - ask them rather than me. They're on all social media platforms. Why not import the blu? You'd have it sooner than the original UK release was going to be anyway much less the delayed one.

I don't know what the official reason is, but people in North America having to wait a year for the Shada DVD release does seem an unusually strange decision to me. Since they never did get blurays of Power Of The Daleks (a year on from when the UK did) or the TV Movie (18 months on) and the entire Classic Who DVD line is going out of print with no repressings it's clear there's not much interest in keeping classic Who going on physical media in North America.

Then surely it'd be easier for people in the US to get it from Canada as opposed to the UK if that's the case?

I think the rationale being that the Canadian release will be pulled too and Amazon.Ca just haven't done so yet.

That would certainly make more sense than Canada getting the DVD in January 2018 and the US getting it in December 2018. Most fans will probably import from the UK - if they have multi-region DVD players - than wait the year anyway...

Just looking at the price it costs just to buy a physical copy of Planet of the Spiders on Amazon is depressing.

That's how I'm finishing my classic DVD collection. It's actually much cheaper to import from the UK than to buy US at in print price and pennies compared to the out of print price.

There must be some difference between release dates for UK vs. US then. That or I'm particularly daft today. There is. It might be a case of BBC America wanting to air it. If you don't want to wait, the Blu-Ray is Region Free and shipping from amazon.co.uk to the US isn't too steep. Ah....I did not check UK amazon.

Netflix doesn't even have it anymore on DVD. I don't have a blueray or region free player, but it would be nice to see the new Shada soon on either TV or in the theater.

Region free players are often quite cheap, I could look into it for you if you would like Some of them can also have the region changed, depending on what device you're using. I watch all my DVDs through my PC so I bought a cheap $30 external DVD drive and then changed the region through my computer to play Region 2 discs. Of course, it doesn't play Region 4 any more (although actually I've found the vast majority of DVDs are Region 2/4 dual coded), but I have my main DVD drive for that anyway. Just note: there is a limit to how many times you can change the region on a drive before it locks and you can't change it any more.

That's why you use VLC media player, it bypasses that entirely and it free.

I don't think I really want to spend that much on a DVD again quite so soon.

My copy came this morning - to answer a few questions we had speculated on, Mark Ayers is doing the score in the Simpson style, with original symphonic workshop effects. The deleted scenes are animated ones that were cut for pacing reasons. There's a nice wee booklet of production notes.

The production booklets are a superb replacement for the Production Subtitles. Things like that really show they care. Have you had a look at the third disc yet and can you say if it is just the 1992 and BBCi versions in HD or if there is anything else exclusive?

It's just those - "just" being relative as it's still some wonderful stuff. The disc is indeed a bluray not just, as some thought, a DVD. Also it has the McGann webcast on the disc rather than as a weblink like the Shada legacy set did so you don't need to worry about internet connections and the link being removed
