It's absolutely terrific. The transition from live action to animation only takes a few back and forths to adjust to and then you're immersed enough to not notice the difference too consciously. The animation was fine - no issues with it whatsoever. Having it as one big omnibus really made it feel like an event. JNT did try and salvage it as a one off TV movie in 1980 and its as though that's what the team recreated with this rather than a 6-ep story. I know we're about to get the Krikkitmen novel which might tell us much about what a Douglas Adams/Tom Baker movie would have been, but really.....Shada kinda does that already. The star here may well be Mark Ayers. His score is just INCREDIBLE. It doesn't just sound Dudley Simpson-like, it sounds like Dudley at his very, very best. There's a repeated theme, a piece of music, that is very much evocking City Of Death's "We're running through Paris...." theme. It's very, very Season 17. Oh, and that last 60 seconds.....I don't care if it makes zero sense it's completely punch the air beautiful. A ridiculously good buy. I think you have summed up my reaction to this very well, so thank you for saving my typing..I am not the quickest! Or most eloquent! The DVD was better than I had every hoped it would be and I noticed no changes in the voices. Incredible work by all involved.

For some reason, US Amazon still has the US release pegged to Sept 2018. I decided to dedicate my computer's DVD/CD drive to region 2, since I have other region 2 Who DVDs....so I ordered that. I'd rather watch on the TV downstairs, but I'm not waiting until next fall. I'm not _that_ patient....

For those in Australia who have not yet seen, I've just noticed that this is available to watch on iview until 25 January.

Just watched this tonight, very enjoyable indeed. Still would have preferred individual episodes, but for the omnibus approach that they've taken, they've pulled it off pretty seamlessly. As for comparisons to Ian Levine's version, in my opinion this is superior in practically every way. The animation is far smoother and integrates much better with the live action scenes, and the integration with the newly recorded audio is just masterfully done. And performance wise, if you closed your eyes you'd be hard pressed to pick where the old audio stopped and the new begun, it really is impressive. As is Mark Ayers Dudley Simpson inspired score, which matches the era so well its spooky. The editing also deserves praise, as they really have done a superb job on transitions between live action and animation, without it ever being distracting or jarring. Quite an accomplishment, particularly as I found Levine's version particularly jarring in that respect, so rather expected this would be the same. Same idea, sure, but this one is truly the whole package, just better done all round. And I, for one, am very happy to own it. The only plusses that I would give Levine's version over this one is that it was broken up into individual episodes (personal preference, that one), and arguably some of the animated likenesses are better, but they are also far more stilted and have less animation variety, so swings and roundabouts there. Some may also like that he shoved in excised material that never would have made it to screen, but personally I can take or leave those extra snippets. Not a dig, but it's just been roundly surpassed now, at least in my opinion. And hopefully everyone who worked on this new version actually got paid as promised... If I had any nitpicks, then the walking animations look rather poor, as usually tend to be the case on these animated Who releases, but it only jumps out occasionally in this one, and there's the odd animation choice here and there, as often happens (one brief shot literally looks like it was coloured in with pencil, completely at odds with everything else), but they've done such a good job matching the pacing and style of the animation to the live action such quibbles hardly matter, and certainly don't detract to any significant degree. This is the definitive Shada for me, now, and I really couldn't ask for or expect anything more than that. Here's hoping for another Who animation for this year, too.

Amazon Canada just updated the info on Shada - September 4th is now the expected ship date.
Given it was noted weeks ago that the date was changed in the States I’m not surprised at this, I do find it odd that the Canadian site waited this long to confirm the Hanuary 9th date was no longer accurate.

As I posted a few pages ago, it was always delayed in Canada according to TVShowsOnDVD and Amazon just didn't bother updating. They always get Region 1/A Doctor Who news first. Believing Amazon on such things only leads to disappointment. They're not run by anyone who actually cares or who really has a mechanism to check anything.

I never said I bought their date - I did say that there have been times where Canada has received goods before the States. I also stated earlier in this thread that I wouldn’t be surprised to have a last minute confirmation from Amazon Canada that the release was pushed back. What irks me is that the US site can update the info over a month before the Canadian - it’s the same bloody company, there is no logical excuse for that.

The logical excuse is.... it's Amazon - from bean to cup, they f- it up to quote Malcolm Tucker. I've ordered from Amazon US, UK, Italy , France and Germany over the years and one thing is consistent - the massively inconsistent service. One person does something right at .Com, someone else balls it up at .Ca. That's the problem when it's one big factory conveyor belt, they don't care. I've had a copy of Nic Roeg's Insignificance on pre-order for 3 years at Amazon.co.uk - they still send me monthly apologies for not sending it yet despite the release being cancelled by Network, the distributor in 2015. I'd cancel it but every third apology they give me a £5 voucher. This is the kind of thinking that goes into Amazon's CS. I've had the value of the disc three or four times over by now I reckon! Amazon.com did a similarly late swerve on not pulling Underwater Menace when it was delayed, so it's swings and roundabouts.

Ha, Amazon Canada never does that, they just remove the item from your order.

Still thinking about this. Guess I've got some time, since it doesn't look like it will be coming out in the US anytime soon.

Another one who can't play the "region-free" blue-ray on my blue-ray player. It plays the menus, but doesn't let me play the feature. Extremely annoying.

For someone that's currently dilly-dallying on whether to purchase one. Do these steelbooks have unique limited edition numbers (e.g. 3065/5000) assigned to them? Could a "limited edition" product like this realistically sell out in its first month of being offered? While these ones aren't numbered, yes, they do sell out. The Series 9 steelbook sold out within days and a copy went on ebay recently for over £150. Shada probably won't sell out that fast but there's no doubt it is limited. [Dec 4 release date] So, it looks like the answer to my question was...that it only took 3 weeks to basically sell-out directly from Amazon.co.uk! I decided to leisurely purchase my (in stock) copy on Christmas day. After that within a day or two, the Blu-ray steelbook of Shada was pretty much from there on, not accessibly available from Amazon and especially not for the price of £25. When it came to the product sending notification of my order a few days later, I was told by Amazon that my "in stock" purchase was more or less not available until a later date. Luckily its dispatch did occur (albeit a month later) and as of today, I'm the proud owner of a no messing around *limited edition* copy. Next time, I won't shilly-shally!

Finally got around to watching this. Great story and the jumps between animation and live action weren't too jarring. I'd forgotten about the easter egg at the end so that was a nice surprise.
