Recently I deleted my account, and while it was rash and extreme, here is why. Lately, I have constantly noticed that a lot of people on this forum have become very rude, mean and overall a bit less close. I feel that this forum is becoming less and less what I feel it was. Now I know that this is probably just me, so what I will be doing is taking a break(I don't know how long) starting today. Hopefully this will help me come back to the community feeling better. Hope you all do well until we speak again. I will check every now and then in case there are questions or private messages people send me, and I will still keep my promise to help with the Divergent Wordsmiths, however I will be staying away from most threads, except the Big Finish Updates thread(as that helps me keep up to date.

Fair enough, but one pressing thing first: irrespective of what happens here on the forum, can I still rely upon your input as an editor for Divergent Wordsmiths?

I am not sure people are becoming meaner......but they are coming more pedantic......and ready to criticise grammar, duplicate threads, perfectly legit points of view, point out perceived sexism, racism & any other "ism" they feel like taking offence at.
But it's still a nice place to hang out, it's just harder to make a point or have a discussion

Lately I've got the feeling that certain members think they are better than others or know more than others. It didn't always used to be that way and it's a shame that it's become so

I hadn't seen anything like this myself, but I don't read anywhere near all the forum posts, so my view is very limited, but I will say, if you see patterns of behaviour that would be best dealt with by either a stricter interpretation of the rules than appears current or perhaps by a new rule all together, people should feel free to post ideas/proposals.

If anyone does see this happening, please report the posts/members. As stated elsewhere, Mods are not omnipresent and don't pick up everything.
However, we always look at reported posts and always act when required. It might not always be apparent because our discussions are not held in public.
We want this to remain a friendly place to be and not degenerate the way some other forums have.
Cheers
Tony

I don't think any poster could be more helpful if they tried. Thanks to the efforts of yourself, omega and whovitt (and others) it's easier to read the key threads on this forum first and then pop over to BF to fill in the details. And I don't have to listen to the podcast because the "DU podcast service" does it for me and picks out the highlights, which is great. The only downside is I haven't missed a BF sale or special offer since I joined the forum. Oh my wallet, my credit card, my everything!

Probably wouldn't look s bad if "this" forum was general face to face conversations- in print words can seem harsher than meant to but.. yes.. pedantic.. for sure

I'm not sure it's just you, I was thinking I might have noticed a wee bit of testiness in the air myself, some of it maybe along the lines that muckypup referred to. (I double-checked the forum rules to make sure respectful tone is there somewhere and noticed that respect in fact appears to the very first word). It's good to take a break, I'm sure, if something's started to get to you - I'm basically having to take the same approach to an entirely unrelated forum at the moment - even after that discussion might have calmed down quite a bit, some of what was posted there recently still can't be good for my blood pressure, so I can understand completely - but I do hope you make it back soon. Your enthusiasm and civility have been duly noted and appreciated (as have the mods' commendable efforts to keep DU a friendly place to visit).

Well, the world at the moment is quite polarised. Everyone's got their teeth and claws out and looking at the pattern of history, it's round about now in each decade where various cultural concerns are starting to come to the fore. It's all violent, angry and depressing, let's not pretend that it isn't, because that is precisely what we need to be aware of at the moment. Here at this assembly for open discussion, we are all representatives of the myriad views we hold. How your viewpoint is judged precisely by how you act and react. That is not a condemnation, that is a statement of fact: it is very important to remember that when you bring a controversial view to board, you are responsible for how it is aired. With careful deliberation or otherwise. An audience cannot infer tonation or body language where there is none, so it has to be done very carefully. And I will say this because it's worth repeating: Tolerance does not mean you must agree, nor should the discussion require that from you to proceed. Indeed, it often falls flat on its face when it stops being about voicing disparate views and becomes about who is right. However, tolerance does mean that you respect the other side as human beings and we do have our foibles. Human beings get tired, human beings get hurried, human beings get vulnerable. No one is infallible, no one can always say precisely the right thing at precisely the right moment. The only thing we can be sure of is that we keep what this forum is all about alive -- being fun and tolerant. That sounds like a worthy goal to me, irrespective of whoever you are, wherever you come from and how bad a day we've been having.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

I always try and keep on an even keel but I've been a bit more grumpy than usual (I have noticed that in myself a bit recently) and I can only offer my apologies and the resolve to take a deep breath and count to ten before posting my replies.

I find it surprising that I seem to agree. To a point. I actually feel that the increase in political "debate" (I say that with tongue in cheek) has led to a bleed over of testiness into other threads. Maybe I'm wrong, but I find that, for the last few months I am more likely to second guess myself before posting or holding back at times because of this. I can't point to specific posts, it's just a general feeling. And I won't go near any political threads, American or otherwise. I just don't like the overall feeling of "I'm right and you are an idiot if you don't agree with me" that is in those threads.
But I still love this place and all of you crazy people.
