A brilliantly insightful article, as always, from Rafael Behr. www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/aug/24/brexit-failure-remainers-shelves-empty-euLike the 4rth Dr said of himself in The Sunmakers, Behr has a gift for the telling phrase. Problem for someone like me is that it makes finding the single best line to quote very difficult since they are all so pithy and so true. "new trade deals are touted, but those are mostly fumes from an engine being revved in a stationary car. Immovable facts of geography and economics are making Britain’s reliance on the rest of Europe impossible to ignore" "The Tory party will always demand pugnacity at a pitch that is incompatible with grown-up diplomacy. [Johnston's] method so far has been to capitulate to the EU on substance, covering the retreat with incendiary rhetoric" "Pro-Europeans are not interested in fixing Johnson’s deal, which they see as irredeemable; and leavers cannot concede that their fundamental premise was flawed. Neither side is yet ready to work with the banal reality that Brexit is an unspectacular failure: neither triumph, nor apocalypse. It is the damp smell in British politics that can be endured, but not quite ignored. The longer it is left untreated, the more expensive it will be to fix."

^^ Yeah, because when British lorry drivers look at the wage rates and conditions that the firms that relied on eastern European drivers imposed, they say no f*****g way and don't take the jobs.
But of course, the political classes still think that somehow this will all get sorted by cutting benefits and forcing people into jobs they cannot afford to get qualified for, or that they live hundreds of miles away from because of the housing crisis in this Sceptred Isle.
Perhaps these 'shortages' will help people to realise that some things just aren't important (McD milkshakes, bits of Frankenstein-chicken in ready foods) any more. Thanks to the lack of frozen vegetables in the shops around here, I've subsituted chopped swede for one of my five + a day. Now I just need to go and mug that woman who keeps stripping the ripe berries off the hedgerows every morning for my second one...

Indeed, one of the supposed benefits of brexit (remember them?) was less bureaucracy once we could set our own rules. Allegedly.

What I find amusing is - the complaints about 'foreigners' taking 'our' jobs during the referendum campaign...
And now they want them to come back and do those jobs! Perhaps those poor Afghanis escaping the Taliban have the necessary skills and can be relocated to the appropriate parts of the country to fill the vacancies?
