Season 8 (my favourite season of my favourite Doctor) to be followed by Season 24 (err, yes) - talk about "from the sublime to the ridiculous"!
This is going to prove the strength of my inner completionist after its severest test. I have no words (within forum limits) for what I thought of S24 in 1987, but I love these blu-ray sets and shall there forever be a gap on the shelves? Could this be the time that number13 finally discovers the true excellence of this season? (I did rediscover 'Love and Monsters' and really enjoyed it so nothing is impossible.)
But Season 24! The batty bats, the so un-ice-cool binbag gangs, Hi-de-ho-mygoodness, and the last one, which is the best one because it's the last one and has one brilliant special effect at least...
Sorry S24 fans, just my bit of fun. Of course I'm going to buy the dratted thing, even if I only watch the special features, admire the packaging and read the booklet I know it will be worth it for that alone. And maybe one day I'll be found wearing a panama hat, check trousers, white trainers and a pink top, rattling some spoons and SCREAMING at 100db as a convert to the best season of 'Doctor Who' EVER! These sets are that good, I cannot resist. I blame the influence of the Rani's brain thingy, whatever it was.
lol! Resistance would be futile.
OK I'll admit there was one good thing about S24. Sometimes JN-T's 'celebrity casting' was perfect and I've always thought Kate O'Mara's Rani is easily the best part of the whole season. I prefer her second story with Sixie for all sorts of reasons, but she's great even when surrounded by cavorting bat-people and a slightly confusing plot!

I say this as a fan of this series - I still don't know what Time and the Rani was all about. Loyhargil, all those genii, the talking brain, feeding the Tetraps with goo. Great fun, but made no sense to me!

I like Dragonfire quite a lot and Paradise Towers is the ultimate in "Well, the concept is cool.." stories but yeah, this is probably the weakest season of them all. Still good in spots, awful in others but something has to be bottom for something to be top and...sorry S24, it's you!
Sylv has little idea what to do with the character, the scripts were all so very last minute, the Beeb refused to give the show an extra penny to relaunch...frankly it's a testament to Sylv, Cartmel and co that they went on to make two very solid to really good seasons following this.
The extended versions will be fun to see. And the CGI. I was reading in DWM that for Season 8 the CGI guy isn't just coming up with what he thinks Terror Of The Autons should look like - he actually dug out the Target novel to see how Uncle Terrance wrote things up without needing to worry about budget. That's wonderfully thoughtful.

I found Series 24 a real breath of fresh air after years of bringing back old monsters and villains, not always with success. Andrew Cartmel brought with him a new way of telling stories. Series 22 was criticised for being too violent (I personally loved its gritty body horror approach), and subsequently Series 23 was watered down (which is why the 'death' of Peri was so shocking), but essentially the same style of story-telling - so Cartmel's comic-strip vision succeeded in telling entertaining stories without relying on physical violence. Whilst Sylv's debut story remains a mess, I loved his style of playing, even in those early moments. His Doctor kind of found himself in the middle of events - rabbit in headlights springs to mind - and tried to bluster his way out (possibly like Sylv himself, when he saw the script!), which was vaguely Troughton-esque, but mainly unique to him, and a million miles away from the overplayed theatricality of the Doctor's previous incarnation, which didn't always sit well with me (on television, at least).
So this wonderful new set is something I'm really looking forward to. I think most people recognise Series 24 has flaws, but I hope the interviews and Behind the Sofa extras aren't too irreverent. New CGI, deleted scenes, new features and interviews with the likes of McCoy, Langford and Aldred, all of whom are lovely people and always vibrant and fun to watch.
At the time, Doctor Who was emerging from beneath the shadow of Mickey Grade and his hastily back-tracked cancellation of the show, ridicule, lack of support and some astonishing 'fan' vitriol. Now those stories have their own nostalgia, generations of youngsters for whom this was their first exposure to the good Doctor and of course, the benefit of hindsight. Also, it features the wonderful melting face scene!

Hello again.
Well I had a tear in my eye watching the season 24 trailer. I affectionally call it the panto season mainly due to the light entertainment casting.
Sylvester McCoy was one of my Doctors from the Eighties. I was very annoyed that the BBC had sacked poor Colin Baker but prepared to give him a chance
I knew we were in for a more comedic Doctor from Sylvester's work in children's television. As he himself said in the trailer it took them a season to grow his character and reign in the more extreme comedic elements.
The stories are extremely variable but do have some interesting and entertaining ideas. I'm glad after season 24 they had a really good think and ended the classic run with seven stories I really enjoyed.
Time and yer Auntie episodes 1 and 2 are unfortunately hilarious. I missed the rest due to a holiday. On reading the novelisation, the rest makes little sense but loygarhil is revealed to be holy grail!
Paradise Towers is probably my favourite with a light touch on some pretty grim ideas.
Delta is a weird mix of light and fluffy and the scary genocidal Gavrok. It's nonsense but performed with such hutzpah I just ran with it. It did help that I watched the whole series on my black and white portable. I had no idea the baby and toddler were quite so green!
Dragonfire had a memorable villain and a stock Who quest story. Ace was teenager as written by bloke, but given an intriguing back story. Also, she was brought to life wonderfully by Sophie Aldred.
Yes, Season 24 was flawed but it was different. It took risks with new writers although not all of them were successful. You watch it with a degree of 'Why did they do that?' but for me that is its charm.
Season 8 is superior in all respects but McCoy brings great energy and invention to the role. Season 24 is the springboard for better things.
Indeed Remembrance, Greatest Show, Fenric, Ghostlight and Survival proved Doctor Who still had the power to surprise but the BBC put the show up against Coronation Street. The intention was clear, to quietly run the show towards eventual cancellation.

If I can find it someday for at least 50% off I might consider buying it for completeness sake, otherwise I can happily live without that season of unwatchable garbage.

IS there any way of legally getting the booklets without buying the UK sets. I know that one of the US sets had it as a PDF but do the others?

Loved that trailer, I hope Big Finish does something with this particular future for Mel!
And this would absolutely be a season where I'd want to check out the special features - the Behind the Sofa lineups are great.

What would they call it...the even older mel trilogy? The doctors back for mel again...again I meant more that I'd like to see Mel's "final" story that got her to this point - there's no reason that 24 Carat has to be any more than a flying visit. The Doctor's just come to get some of Mel's rejuvenating carrot-based face cream to drop twenty-four years off his look in time for his visit to Gallifrey!

So I accidentally time-stormed into the Iceworld shopping centre to pre-order my copy (they had an actual dragon enforcing social distancing, with lasers! ) and they said I'd have to wait until June for it to thaw out! I wanted to complain to the manager but they said he could be a bit frosty when someone upsets him, so I guess I'll just have to chill.
...
Yes, I really did pre-order, then I watched the trailer and sat there with a great big goofy nostalgic grin frozen on my face for the whole time. I'm really looking forward to this now. Me, looking forward to seeing Season 24 again, after all I've said for the last 33 years! What on *Earth is wrong with me?
(I'll just have to tell everyone I bought it for the extras... )
* Other planets, space-stations and assorted solid bodies are available.
