I read too that Jeffrey Combs has been hinting at conventions that he's going to, finally, be a regular in Trek after being the most prolific guest star ever. He was, I think, going to be a regular in Enterprise Season 5 but we all know what happened there. I could see him as the ship's Doctor. Herbert West himself running sickbay Ooh, that'd be cool. I'd enjoy seeing him as a reformed maniac who's just trying to hold down a job as a neurotic Starfleet doctor. Basically, I think I'd like to see him play a H.P. Lovecraft expy on the show, I think that'd be awesome.

EW and Variety both reporting live from the Television Critics Association summer press tour, say they've confirmed the lead (they don't say Captain) will be a female and a person of color. My Angela Bassett dreams still live

Quite a few titbits now!
Fuller says Star Trek: Discovery takes event mentioned in previous iterations of Trek but "never full explored". It will be set in the Prime Universe, 10 years pre-Kirk, before his 5-year mission. It will delve into an event in Starfleet history that “has never been explored.
"We don't have anyone cast yet, but we're in the process of casting. We’ll probably have a few more aliens than you normally do in a Star Trek cast and absolutely have a gay character".
Given the era, I think we can say now THIS is why CBS didn't want Axanar's big budget fan film being made - this is right in that era.

The female lead won't be a Captain, we're now hearing from Fuller. And sounds like we're going to feel very at home visually: "we can play with all the iconography of those ships and those uniforms.”
Fuller's also said they're not subject to standards and practices and "can do pretty much anything". I don't expect 18-rated Trek but it will be interesting to see what they choose to do with that freedom.
This panel is cool.

Spock's mother Amanda Grayson will "maybe" be featured in Discovery but will not be central.
I'm OK with not. The Trekverse is vast. We don't need to make it smaller with references, at least not so soon.

And there we go - The lead character's rank will be lieutenant commander... "with caveats".
Fascinating..

I wonder if Discovery is ten years before Where No Man Has Gone Before or ten years before The Cage. I'm also wondering whether the uniforms will be the same as in The Cage. And, will we be seeing the flat-headed Augment Klingons, or will there be regular Klingons (surely there won't be no Klingons). Its also interesting that the lead isn't a captain. So far, I can't tell if she will be a lower ranking officer who is in charge, like Sisco was at first, or if Discovery's captain just isn't the main character.

Fuller said that even though he could have set the series post-Nemesis, he specifically wanted this timeline to play with. Despite the Star Trek "Fans" FB page being filled with negativity, I think it's wonderful that he's got a specific story to tell and is dying to do so. Can't wait for the casting. Apparently 7 key cast members to fill.
There's too much potential in the early war between the Klingons and the Federation not to tell it. The era fits perfectly and the Axanar lawsuit would tie into that too.

I wonder if Discovery is ten years before Where No Man Has Gone Before or ten years before The Cage. He specifically mentioned it being set 10 years before "Kirk" as well as TOS, so I'm guessing WNMHGB. Here's a fun cheat-sheet with the developments:

This has the potential to be really, really cool.

Well, those of us that thought they were leaving casting and the start f filming very, very late to announce seem to have been right - this has now been pushed to May. Four more months to wait. On the plus side..we should have Doctor Who and Star Trek on air at the same time.

You ever notice that they can never seem to be on at the same time for more than three years without one of them getting cancelled? Let's hope they break that pattern.
