Not read a ST novel in a looooong time. Will have to rectify that soon. See if you can track down any of the Diane Duane TOS books. I'm reading Doctor's Orders at the moment that puts Bones temporarily in charge of the Enterprise when Kirk disappears planetside and it is marvellous.

That is one that I have read and I totally agree with you. It is one of my favourite ST novels of all. I love everything about it and the cover is pretty awesome as well

My Enemy, My Ally has got quite the reputation from what I've seen, as does The Romulan Way. It'll be interesting to see what Romulan culture is actually like beneath all that posturing and subterfuge.

Joe Menosky is probably the chap who probably understood the characters on Voyager the best. It'll be interesting to see what he comes up with for this new series.

So apparently at the Saturn awards last night Bryan Fuller stated:
Season 1 will be 13 episodes long
It will NOT be set after Undiscovered Country and before TNG
It will NOT be an anthology show
They start filming in September
Episodes could be up to an hour long as it's not being shown on broadcast TV which would also mean that the show could be more graphic. However he doesn't think the ST universe should be full of people swearing all the time.
Personally i'm glad it it won't be an anthology show. That was the only real negative for me that I had heard surrounding the new show.

Season 1, 13 episodes long, good call i think the first series will have an arc so a shorter episode count will cut out the need for filler but i'd have been happy with maybe 16 episodes but then i could just be being greedy!

She's a good looking ship. Nice to see that they're going to get some mileage out of that proposed design for Planet of the Titans. Can't wait to see who her crew may be.

She's a wee bit CGI looking just now but they rushed it together for the SDCC reveal - it'll come together much more by the Spring.
It's certainly a cross between those McQuarrie designs and an almost Klingon war ship. I like it. It does say very classic Trek to me.
I also love the name. Discovery sums up the whole ethos of Trek. Hopefully some casting news very soon - filming ain't far off!

Ooh, I loked that. I didn't think it was too CGI. In fact I felt the hull had a genuine metallic look to it that I've never seen before in a Star Trek ship. The texturing was amazing.

I'd heard some pretty negative stuff about the new design before seeing the trailer. Personally I don't think it's actually too bad

That might be down to Nick Meyer. It's good to see that he hasn't lost his creative spark over the intervening thirty or so years.

According to one of the executive producers, the design for the Discovery is not final. They are still working on it but what we saw in the trailer gives an example of what they are aiming for.

Bryan Fuller and Heather Kadin, the execs, have spoken at Comic Con about the diversity they will be looking for in the cast. Of course, that's always been a part of Trek but they specifically mentioned that positions of power will be taken by black and female actors. If they do go for a black woman in the role of Captain, I think Viola Davis would absolutely nail it, though I'm unsure if she's tied up for more How To Get Away With Murder. She's about to get some serious geek-cred as Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad, too. She's a "name" actor which I'm sure is a factor CBS will like, to attract curious non-fans. Alfre Woodard would be a good fit too, though doesn't have the cache that Davis does. Angela Bassett would be on my list too, though I think she's busy with American Horror Story S6 and American Crime Story S2. I read too that Jeffrey Coombs has been hinting at conventions that he's going to, finally, be a regular in Trek after being the most prolific guest star ever. He was, I think, going to be a regular in Enterprise Season 5 but we all know what happened there. I could see him as the ship's Doctor. Herbert West himself running sickbay It start in anuary, they're really going to have to start very, very soon to allow time for effects in post.
