It is 1903 and on the edge of Niagara Falls, something is wrong at Nikola Tesla’s generator plant, where someone – or something – is sabotaging the maverick inventor’s work. Has Tesla really received a message from Mars? And where does his great rival Thomas Edison fit into these events? The Doctor and her companions Yaz, Ryan and Graham must join forces with one of history’s greatest minds to save both him and planet Earth.

I like this pattern of Who getting guys who were really quite big on US TV 10-20 years ago, that's kinda fun. Last year we had Chris Noth in Arachnids and here we've got Goran as Tesla. Goran was famously the guy who was brought on board to replace George Clooney in ER. I like that the casting net gets thrown a little wider these days.
Edison, for all his genius, was a bully and a thief who used organised criminals against people working in similiar fields to his own. Famously the reason some of the early film pioneers moved away from New York - the centre of US filmmaking in the early 20th century - was to escape Edison's thugs who were destroying sets and threatening workers who weren't willing to work on Edison's projects. They moved to a rather obscure orange grove part of California and Hollywood was born! I wonder if that's the Edison we'll get here.
If I were guessing, it will be and "the fam" will be ignorant of Tesla outside of the car name and they'll learn about his genius and vision that his innovations should be benefiting all, not just sold for the profits Edison chased. We'll see next week. The Tesla-Edison story is, like Rosa and the Indian Partition, so interesting it really doesn't need aliens.

Maybe we'll get a Bowie reference "Weren't that the guy David Bowie played?" I really can't imagine of these companions as movie buffs for some reason. Maybe Graham but even then, old school more than Chris Nolan. "Tesla? Like Elon Musk's cars?" is about as much as I expect them to know but they'll all know Edison, and the whole family will learn why we should all know Tesla more as we go.  |

After 3 weeks of 'yep, good enough', this is the first gem of the series. Funny, tense, exciting and thought-provoking, Metivier makes one hell of a debut, and Manzoor is easily the best director thus far this series. Dare I say, probably next best to Childs for best director of Chibbs' era thus far, and I can't wait to see how she handles the Judoon next time.

That was wonderful.
Cool aliens.
Great Tesla, and rival Edison.
Only problem, and I don't even really consider it a problem since I laughed so hard, was how adorably incompetent and uncoordinated the scorpions were.
Yaz tried to stop them by over-turning some bread. I'm litterally cracking up as I type this.

A solid episode all round. Some nice parallels drawn between the Doctor and Tesla, a fairly simple yet effective threat and decent exploration of Tesla and Edison.
