Everything's okay here. We had two very close calls with family, but so far, no news is good news. I'm doing alright. I've gone into what a friend of mine called "crisis control" mode, which is solutions now, panic later. I'm limiting my exposure of the news to just the ABC and SBS bulletins following the spread of the outbreak. No speculation, just facts as they emerge. I've also started digging into my "to be watched/listened/read" pile and started unfurling that. The forum here is a great coping mechanism if you should need it. We can chat about Doctor Who until we're blue in the box. There's also been discussions at home and work what we should do if there is an outbreak in the city and a lockdown of our employers. Basically, we're dealing with it by talking about it. It's situation normal until otherwise and there are plans being formulated if it should go sideways. Particularly relevant in my case since I've had respiratory problems since I was very young. If I do become infected, I'll likely get the sharper end of it. However, I am going to live my life, albeit with an extra layer of care because I can't afford (literally) not to. I can't afford to be afraid, right now. As much as that impulse is there. Be safe, be smart and the more you know facts, rather than heresay, the less frightening it will be.

I wonder if it would be OK for this thread to be pinned? Hopefully we can use it to share our experiences & also how to cope with self-isolation which some people may find a bit strange.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

We’ve cancelled a big community event at our school this week: we normally run a community lunch for Harmony Day - which, in a school boasting around 40 languages is usually pretty spectacular, cuisine-wise - but health concerns are forcing us to scale it back. Not cancel it, just have a smaller event restricted to students only. Our department heads have released a memo about leave which means that anyone forced to quarantine themselves won’t have their sick leave affected and their school won’t have to worry about payments for relief teachers. Having just signed my life away on a mortgage - did I mention I have a new house? 😂 - I’m a little concerned about the financial implications but I’m more worried about my sons who live in Melbourne and work in customer service, to be honest. I’m also hoping that you folks all keep safe and happy.

This has had a huge impact on my mental health not so much the virus but how society have selfishly panic buyed showing no thought to others just to feed there own selfish needs so good on supermarkets rationing certain products, everybody deserves get these essential items of sanitiser & hand wipes.
The media are thriving on this to sell papers with there end is nigh propaganda, you hear about the deaths but very little about those who recovered, i understand the media needs to update us but they are causing mass panic instead of trying show reassurance that many people actually recover.
I get we need be vigilant & use a bit more common sense, we had a letter yesterday from my uncles care home which states no visitors for a month as rightfully they want to protect the elderly.
Told my dad he won't be going out as he a diabetic, he has check up appointment Wednesday but i hope it's cancelled cause prefer he stays in isolation under this virus peaks.
Not bothered about myself so much, I've always been scared of living battling bipolar & my depressive demons 24/7 i self isolate anyway because i have social phobia issues so not going affect me staying in.
I'm coping by not watching the news, listening to Big Finish, gaming & watching films, these are my coping distractions.
Love you guys & gals on this forum, stay safe & healthy.

I just got the news- My brother had contact with some infected people because he works in the car industry and one of his colleagues is home sick and isolated. Luckily, none of them have become seriously ill yet.
My brother and his family have now self-quarantined for 2 weeks, he is not allowed to return back to work.
My brother lives over the hill in the next door village. Basically spitting distance from my living room balcony.
My brother and his family are healthy, and have no known complicating conditions. It is very likely nothing will happen to anybody. And also my little 1 year old niece will be fine.
Their biggest worry now is that they might not be able to marry- the wedding was scheduled for beginning of June.
So they are not panicking and are in good spirits.

They're doing everything correct so I'm sure it will be fine. Hopefully the wedding goes ahead.

It’s all fine for me so far. My elderly relatives are a long way from me and we will not be visiting for a while, so basically no chance of them getting it from my side of the family. They seem to be taking sensible precautions at their end as well.

Our Prime Minister yesterday placed an official "ban" on large public gathering events- catch is it doesn't start until Monday.. Reason.. He is at a big religious weekend convention/festival.. Can you imagine 10's of thousands of sweaty possibly infected people gathered in 1 spot...
Hypocrisy is astounding- words fail me. A potential petri dish of infection..
:-(

I assume that is the same guy who already astounded the whole world with his empathic reaction and expert management of the fire crisis?

Important things to do: Surround yourself with positivity: this sounds new age hippy dippy but it really does work. Your health deteriorates when you're surrounded by negativity. Hydrate before you die-drate: Drink water bi***es Fruits and veggies: Get your vitamins in and eat healthy. Do things you love: this goes back to the positivity. Do things that you love that you're able to.
Most importantly: Wash your damn hands

Just chatted online with my American uncle with chronic lung disease who I am worried about. They are fine. They self-isolate and try to do all necessary precautions. You cannot imagine my relief that I got from such a fast positive answer from them.

Worth a read on the UK strategy for dealing with the virus. Despite the usual 'Blame Boris' stuff, there is actually a rationale behind it all:
