I don't think there will be another new physical format. & I think BF will lean further away from physical releases. With the new state of the world following COVID, that seems sensible to me. Focusing primarily on download shifts away from the problems created by storage and shipping. The money that would typically go into that could, theoretically, be funnelled into a safety net for the company in uncertain times. Something they can use to soften the blow of a snap lockdown or unexpected outbreak. I have a feeling, though, that there will always be a place for physical media somewhere in how they offer their stories. More probably, like ljwilson suggested, in limited edition materials. Cassettes, vinyls, CDs, whatever comes next... There's something quite appealing to the collector about having a physical box to put on a bookcase shelf. I still have a spindle of 100 blank DVDs and an optical drive that can burn discs... It's just getting old of robust CD cases that's the fun and games. That and the pile of VHS tapes still waiting to be digitised from decades ago...
Yes, physical archives can be very attractive if done properly.

I had a very similar experience with the DVDs. I leant some to a friend who eagerly picked them up, took them home... Came back the next day, returned them (really regretfully), and told me they didn't have a DVD player in the house anymore. They hadn't realised until they'd had the discs physically in their home just how much streaming they'd consumed. You're right, it's such a comparatively short time going from one to the other. I still have an IKEA bookcase full of VHS tapes (movies and my metal music) from when I started collecting in the 80s. Still have a VCR. LOLZ. For me physical purchase will always be #1 over digital. If the product is digital only then I can break my "personal rule".. I'm very similar. I like the surety of having a physical case or cover in my hands. I've found one of the lessons of the internet is not everything is as well-archived as first appears. Things do get lost. It's more difficult to misplace a 200-page tome than a 200MB file. The only distinction I have is for things like audio productions because a) they'd eventually take up so much space that I just don't have, and b) the shipping alone would bankrupt me. And this is not a Big Finish thing alone, either. I find it much easier to have something like a Bandcamp (Soundcloud, Big Finish, etc.) account for downloads to multiple devices. A lot of audio, for me, tends to be heard on the go. I was sitting on the train listening to The Wild, Wild, Wild West from The Avengers the other day and got to answer What are you listening to? with "An Englishman riding a bucking bronco," and start a really interesting conversation from there. With the new state of the world following COVID, that seems sensible to me. Focusing primarily on download shifts away from the problems created by storage and shipping. It's funny you mention digitisation: I've still got some of the video cassettes used to record Doctor Who back when Australia was doing a marathon run for its 40th anniversary. The benefit of having those copies meant that I've got versions of stories in different formats. Colin Baker's first season is in 25-minute segments, rather than 45-minutes... Except when it's edited into 45-minutes for things like The Trial of a Time Lord. Without those off-screen recordings of the 60s stories, we wouldn't have a sizable portion of the show's beginnings. So, physical media has also helped with replacing the gaps in historical material, as well. Rather than relying purely on memory, there's something tangible to look at.

If the product is digital only then I can break my "personal rule".. I had a smattering of VHS tapes, and a few Betamax, that had to get thrown out as well. So it’s movies and a more curated selection of books moving forward. It’s tough throwing 40 years of your life away.

I have a DVD player in my PC... which I don't think I've ever used. Haven't watched a DVD in maybe 6 years, since I was in a bad way and thought to have a DBZ marathon in the background for the duration and discovered they'd gone bad on me, like expired milk. Haven't so much as touched a CD since middle-school.
One thing Big Finish might do to appease physical collectors (assuming they use a reputable supplier of,course) is custom flash drives w/ the .mp4s on them. Then folks could easily just plug them in to their PCs or TVs or even (via adapters) phones or tablets to listen. Could get some cool Doctor Who-themed designs, and without the space constraints of CDs they could do much broader collections--like a release of every MR story for a,certain companion, all-in-one, or similarly themed releases.

Just been thinking about the upcoming sets, and had some thoughts based on what we know as of today!
1st Doctor and Dodo Volume 1
Mark Wright producing and script editing with Briggs directing. Bradley and Cornelius set to return. Hopefully a nice mix of 60's stories, but a modern twist and perhaps a small arc.
2nd Doctor: Beyond War Games
Little known, but Mark Wright is producing, Nick Briggs is script editor(and I think Director, but unconfirmed). Could this be what Lydia West was brought into record at Big Finish a few months back? If it is, is she a new companion? What if she is and then becomes the 14th Doctor?
3rd Doctor 2022 Volumes 1 and 2
Nothing really confirmed, other than Tim Treloar is the 3rd Doctor. For myself, I would love to see a connected run of 3rd Doctor and SJS, but honestly, I love the range so am happy with wherever they take it. Though it is one range that could use a female writer or two.
4th Doctor - Solo
Obviously, we know more than most other Doctor's ranges, with Dreyfus' Master having one last story in Blood of the Time Lord, and the intro of Margret Hopwood in The Ravencliff Witch, but the other two stories are more up in there. I do hope the guess that The Nine is in Dreams of Avarice are true, as I love the character, but I don't have a clue where Shellshock will go!
5th Doctor - Forty 1 and 2
Looking forward to the sets, though the time between the two seems odd, and I do think that even with the little info on The Auton Infinity we have, it does sound infinitely more exciting than the first two stories. I will be interested to see how it plays out, and will hope we do get some cameos from other important parts of the 5th Doctor's life with Peri, The Master and Kamelion.
6th Doctor, Mel and Hebe
Most anticipated run for me, with a new companion, played by Ruth Madeley(still not over the news), with Mel and Ol' Sixie. Having Jacqueline Rayner as the producer is very exciting, and I do hope we get a female heavy team of writers, with McMullin, Morgan and Hopley especially. And it would be very nice to have Helen Goldwyn directing!
7th Doctor: Silver and Ice and TBA 2nd Release
Exciting to see a Starkey script, but I will admit Silver and Ice doesn't excite me too much. Do love seeing Bonnie Langford is getting a lot of love this upcoming year, and Samuel Clemens really knows how to direct McCoy and his stories, so I do still expect a solid set. The second set is probably disconnected from the first, and might be The Last Day set BF teased.
8th Doctor 2022 Volumes 1 and 2:
Nothing known, but I imagine this will be a new run completely disconnected from Dark Eyes through to Stranded. Maybe a new companion, or perhaps a solo story or two depending on how Stranded ends.
War Doctor Begins Volume 3 and 4:
Excited to see where these go, and what writers are attached. Always a champion for a Foley script of course, but perhaps Una McCormack or Louise Jameson herself.
9th Doctor Volumes 4-8:
Going into the next run, I really hope the same kind of format is kept. I'm not opposed to perhaps a loose arc for the sets to all follow, but the mini arcs each boxset so far has had has been quite nice. It would be nice to see as much variety as well, with perhaps names such as Fitton, Armitage, Moore, Adams and Benedict for writers, and Bentley, Clemens, Jameson, Kay for directors.
10th Doctor:
PLEASE GIVE US A MARTHA AND 10 SET BIG FINISH!
11th Doctor and 12th Doctor Chronicles:
Supposed to be a new companion in the 11th Doctor Chronicles, so excited to see where that goes. And who knows where the 12th Doctor goes next.
