Welp, I thought it was loads of fun. I'm not surprised given your screen name. ;-) Totally kidding! :-) I've only heard the first story so far but I agree with you. I enjoyed it, thought it was lots of fun, and I thought that before the repartee could start to stale, it was buoyed greatly by what must have been a fairly novel premise (if so, those aren't always easy to come by after a gazillion stories). Overall, I found that just as enjoyable from anything from previous Missy sets.

Couldn’t agree more about Body and Souless, sherlock. I’d even go as far to say it’s quite dull, which Missy should never, ever be. War Seed isn’t much better either, to be honest. It shows potential, but in the end it’s just as plodding as the previous story. The Seed has so much untapped potential and everything else feels unbaked and uninteresting. At least we’ll probably get a decent War Master story out of the idea at some point. And it doesn’t improve with Two Monks One Mistress, unfortunately. There’s still a distinct lack of spark between Missy and the Monk that’s a complete contrast to the two stories they’d shared in volumes 1 and 2. And the interaction between the Monk and Nun isn’t particularly engaging either, it’s just generic and feels like it exists solely to build up to them having their own set, frankly. I’m glad Missy’s got her Master TARDIS back, though it’s reminded me of the 7 stories I’ve had to sit and listen through to get back to that point! Yeah, this set is a big disappointment. It’s all so aimless and not terribly interesting. I also can’t think of a better word than lifeless; the interactions between Missy and any other character lacks spark and at times it feels like everyone recorded separately and was edited together. The music and sound design is lacking throughout and suffers from the same issue as volume 2, where it’s heavily reused from previous episodes and also The Paternoster Gang. Joe Kraemer is a brilliant asset to Big Finish, so it’s a shame to have this happen twice now. One of those very rare misfires from Big Finish where it’s lacking in every aspect of the production. And it pains me to say that because at the very least Missy should always entertain and steal the show. A real shame. Wow darn I’m glad I didn’t waste $20 on getting it Thanks for the review certainly dodged a bullet with this release

I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed Missy and the Monk. So far my favourite Missy boxset!

I am flabbergasted. I came here expecting to see love heaped upon this fantastic release, and here I've found it being torn apart! Don't get me wrong, War Seed isn't the best, but it's still enjoyable and the first and last stories of the set are some of the best in the entirety of Missy! The lack of chemistry y'all are pointing out is also absolutely insane since Missy and the Monk are at their best in this series! And don't even get me started with One Mistress Two Monks, because that story is incredible! I literally laughed out loud! Like... this boxset has flaws, but none that make it deserve a 2 out of 5! That's just absurd! Especially when you compare this to the last series which wasn't exactly the best.

I don't know what has possessed Shallacatop to trash this release, but it's incredible. It literally made me laugh out loud. It's not dull, it doesn't reuse things, the sound design isn't lacking, the effects aren't mediocre, the Monk and Nun and Missy have incredible chemistry throughout, and quite frankly, this series is probably the best Missy Series yet for the sole fact that it's worst story is still at worst a 7/10.

I wouldn't come in with an attitude because people don't like something you do. My God, the internet would be a pretty scary place with that attitude.

I’m glad you got more out of the set than I did. I don’t buy something to not enjoy it and I do typically have something positive to say about a release, so for me to completely “trash” something is very much a rarity. What I will say is that it does reuse things. There’s not a single piece of music in this set that’s brand new and I don’t believe there was for the previous volume either, except maybe a piece for The Lumiat (which could well have actually been made for Masterful!). What we get is a mixture of themes made for the first volume and also items from The Paternoster Gang. To reuse isn’t so bad, but when there’s little material in the first place, it’s overuse becomes very noticeable and very tiring very quickly.

Hound’s Monk is more of a Middling Monk then a Meddling one. He lacks the allusion of danger that Butterworth and Garden had, while yes both of them suffered from cowardice (in the former) and a severe dose of “I didn’t think that through” (in the later) they weren’t idiots. Hound’s earlier Monkying around had the “yes, I didn’t think that through…” of Garden with a dose of the comedic prattishness that Buuterworth’s had. That worked nicely.

I said Missy gets some cracking lines, didn't I? This one had me howling - not just at the picture in my head but also the Monk's reaction.
MISSY: Oh, don’t worry. My handbag’s lined with a placcie bag from Bejam’s. MONK: Oh! The indignity!
(It does work better when you hear it.)

God, this was a good line, but I raise you Missy complimenting the very manly, totally a man Duke on his childbearing hips, because THAT damn near killed me on the spot!

Just finished the box set and I hate to say it but I have to echo what a lot of others have said that this boxset: it feels really stale. I normally love Missy and I really liked the monk’s previous outings, but I think this felt too samey and safe. The first two stories melted into a puddle of running around, technobabble, and not very interesting monsters. The third story at least had a slightly clever premise but I think I have seen riffing on comedia del arte done better in the recent inside no 9 episode and “one man two guvners”. I like the nun but I am not sure what else can be done with her. Also I feel like this box set only had a few good jokes that I really laughed at. Also I remember really loving the music in the first box set because it was so darkly whimsical but it doesn’t work as well with stories here that it wasn’t written for. I understand if it’s because of budget but I hope they write just a little bit of new music that goes with the stories for future boxsets. Going back to the first boxset that felt so exciting, laugh out loud funny, dark, and had real purpose where this mostly feels boring and lifeless. I think they really should take a totally new direction for the next Missy outing perhaps with a driving plot or riffing on fairytales with Missy playing the villain role in each one (since Missy is basically DW’s take on a Disney villainess.) I really hope we get more access to more characters/actors from 12’s era (including Capaldi himself) sooner rather than later. As much as love Missy for comedy, I can’t wait until she can play off of 12, Clara, Bill, etc. again so she can do some stories with some real dramatic meat to them.

War Seed was the highlight of the set for me. Jonny Candon is an absolute catch and I can't wait to see what he brings to the table.

I really quite enjoyed this. I held off a day or two to be in the right mood, then chocks away and with right mood firmly in place it didn’t disappoint.
Lots of fun dialogue. There’s a brilliant reference to Time Flight at one point that’s just comedy gold!
It’s been interesting reading the different views on the box set though. I think maybe a stronger link between the three parts might be the way to go for the next boxset. Possibly with a bit more edge and a smidge less comedy. But overall, I was very happy with this.

Although not the best Missy set, this was still enormous fun.
Having really enjoyed “Barrister to the Stars” I had been looking forward to hearing what James Kettle had created for the last story and I was not disappointed!
In fact my main disappointment with this box set was that there was only the three stories. I was left wanting more.
And speaking of more, it was interesting hearing in the extras that the Missy range was similar in tone to The Paternoster Gang. Which was no real surprise, but did get me wondering if Missy and her two Victorian charges might make an appearance in the next Paternoster series? The writers just need to find another plot device to prevent her killing everyone.
And finally there might not have been any new music, but I thoroughly enjoyed the music suite at the end. It is one of the few suites of music I will be tempted to listen to again.

War Seed - part way through so far. Why do all the men sound like Bruce-Master? best line (so far) MISSY: So why don’t you take him to the roof unharmed and we can all have a little chat before I use all these lovely bombs and guns to make your office look like a dropped lasagne. Ooo, messy. I'm looking forward to hearing about the Time War in the next track.
