Done first two stories and enjoying the ride so far. It’s not the kind of set that’s setting the world on fire, nor is it trying to, but these are well made and I’m liking Hebe’s introduction.

I did not like the first story at all. I found the characters extremely grating, to the point that I almost skipped to the next story. I didn't, and I wasn't too upset when they died. Even Hebe was a little hard to take in that first story. I get that she's very independent and doesn't want anyone's pity, but I think it was just really over the top. Each story got better and I really did like Maelstrom. I do agree that having every story that Hebe is in be on a water planet is kind of repetitive, but I'm looking forward to see where the next set takes us.
As an aside, this is the second Jac Raynor Sixth Doctor story in a row (I think) that I've really disliked. The first was her story Like in the Six and Peri set that was out last year. Now, I have memories of liking her work in the past, so I'm quite surprised at this. I hope we get some better stories from her in the future.

Listened to the first story The Rotting Deep & while it has some interesting ideas the plot wasn't fleshed out enough & went nowhere. Some of the acting from the supporting cast was awful - Mandi Symonds as Skye in particular screaming like a banshee is like the sound of finger scratching down a chalk board it becomes quickly very irritating & those Aussie accents weren't the best & should have hired a authentic aussiedoctorwhofan Ruth Madeley as Hebe was great though.

Listened to The Rotting Deep this morning and enjoyed that. It was a rather basic story but I don't think that is nessisarily a bad thing for a companion introduction story. Base under seige helped us get to know the charcter of Hebe. I was worried her sarcastic nature might be a bit too much from some of the reviews I've seen but I think it worked. It wasn't sarcastic for the sake of sarcastic. I liked that it was a barrior she had built up because of comments people made throughout her life. I think the right move will be to soften her thoughout her travels and break down the barriors. Will be interested to see where they go from here with her. I liked the relationship betweent he 3 main characters and there is a lot of promise there. Oh and the ending. I had tears when In started realising they were talking about Evelyn. Really nice touch. I’m 2/3 of the way through the set and I agree, it was a basic DW-base-under-siege story but I think it worked as a character introduction. What we are looking for is how does the new character react to the circumstances we as listeners understand and/or have a handle on? Mention has been made of Hebe having some sharp edges as a character and based on my experiences with people who have to use a wheelchair to get around, I think those choices for her character very much feel earned, as well as ringing true. Even with the second episode we see those edges slowly starting to be softened. In some ways she almost feels like a companion counterpart to the way the 6th Doctor was presented in his early TV days. Raynor has built in a character arc for her. If I have one complaint it is that, at least to my ears, Ruth Madeley hasn’t quite figured out voice acting yet. She isn’t bad but I do find a lot of her line readings to be sort of flat and lacking vocal color. As noted, she isn’t bad but when working with Colin & Bonnie, it shows. At least to me. Still, enjoyable set thus far.

Maelstrom was same standard as other two. It’s not setting the world on fire but it’s well made and feels new. I think that’s the best complement I can give this set, it all feels very new and fresh so I’m onboard to see how this team develops.

I try to only buy things on sale and I still spend way too much. Kinda regret grabbing Water Worlds, though. I'm at the halfway point, and wow. The actors are all giving it their all... but these scripts ain't great. I do like Hebe, though (after being rather one-note in the first story, it was great fun seeing her immediately get super flirty with the fishman. She also has good chemistry with the Doctor and Mel, when she's allowed to be a character, at least (oh boy oh boy will I have a lot to say in that when i get to writing up my final thoughts). That said, I think Big Finish kind of shot themselves in the foot by with her. Hebe is stuck forever inside of Mel's tenure as companion. It just seems... unnecessarily limiting. I think it would've been cool to slowly build up a new TARDIS team for Colin Baker's Doctor, like they've been able to do with McGann's, untethered from the TV show's continuity. ... Anyway, I'm popping in here prematurely because I have a question. Well, several, actually, but only one that matters. Basically... I'm confused on Evelyn's role in Hebe's backstory. I though that {Spoiler} Evelyn left the TARDIS to get married to that one guy on that one planet, and spent the rest of her life there. Did she go back to Earth? I vaguely remember the 7th Doctor visiting her on her deathbed, but did that scene occur on Earth? What exactly happened with her? Or is the implication rather that Evelyn did the Amy Pond thing a d was working as a tutor in-between TARDIS excursions?

At least that's how I understood it.
