I recently decided to listen to all the 8th Doctor boxsets, one after the other, as if it was one big story. I have done a number of re-listens to both the 8th Doctor MR stories as well as EDAs/Lucie Miller but have never gone back and listened to the boxsets like this. One thing that has really struck me is generally how much better they are when listened to this way, rather than with 6 months or more in between releases. The arc that seemed to improve the most when listened to all at once was Stranded. I was a fan of it to begin with, but my goodness does it improve after a re-listen. The chapters that I believed were weak were not as weak as I had thought, and the highlights were fantastic. I was unable to see the subtleties in the Robin arc before, but his characterization was so much better when heard again, and more sequential. I appreciate this range so much more now, which I wasn't sure was possible.

I was unable to see the subtleties in the Robin arc before, but his characterization was so much better when heard again, and more sequential. I appreciate this range so much more now, which I wasn't sure was possible. The main issue with Robin is that he has such a small presence in the earlier sets that it's very easy to forget he's there at all. I don't think it's just listening to everything at once that makes the story better, but also the foreknowledge of where the story's going -- it recontextualizes many scenes, as you now know what to pay attention to. Well, theoretically. Also: congrats on making it through all the boxsets like that! I'm impressed! I wanted to do the same thing last year, but only managed to get through Dark Eyes. I do keep meaning to start back up on my Dark Eyes relisten, just... not... quite... yet.... .... Anyway, my experience w/ Dark Eyes was that listening to each set back-to-back did... not improve the experience, but I did (and to an extent still do) expect Doom Coalition to be better binged. My recollection of my first go-round there is that its story was pretty convoluted and hard to follow. Ravenous definitely had the clearest/cleanest over-arcing plot, even if it didn't exactly go anywhere in the end (not that I don't love RAV4, just that the titular ravenous aliens wound up being pretty useless beyond justifying a trio of phenomenal Master stories).
