I think the shorter series length shows the heavier weight towards RTD / showrunner as you miss those middle of the run episodes in which a guest writer would typically pen. Hard to have a firm opinion until we see how the series itself pans out and the writer lineup for the following series. By that I mean it could be a more connected series than we’d be used to, Flux aside, or it could be RTD bedding the era in and more slots are available for other writers in 2025 onwards.
I am happy to see a return for Moffat - he’s Doctor Who’s best so I’d never begrudge another story from him - and looking forward to Kate Herron & Briony Redman’s outing. I think no writer of colour is a big omission, mind, and would like to see that rectified ASAP.

This has probably already been said, but RTD writing 6/8 episodes is frustrating.
I like him as a writer, both on Doctor Who and his excellent serial dramas such as Years and Years, and It's a Sin,
BUT
I feel the show needs multiple writers to set a different tone to showcase the spectrum of horror to comedy that all of Time and Space has to offer. For a show that promotes inclusion and diversity, it needs more voices.
I do appreciate that a shorter episode count means the season arc needs more attention but surely RTD can be content with a season opener, a two part finale and the continuity bridging other writers episodes? Perhaps season 2 will see RTD ease his writing burden/benign megalomania.

This is where I think America has a better set up when it comes to writing tv shows. A more collaborative effort with a team of writers means that you can have both a diversity of voices and keep everyone on the same page regarding story arcs and such.
It's honestly kind of wild that each and every episode is written by one single person and then, at best, gets a quick touch up in the editing room and maybe some additional bits added on by the producer.
I also think the show-runner position in general is a mistake and I hate how it has come over to US industry as well. The jobs of producer and head writer were separate for decades for a reason.

That's how pretty much every tv show in the UK is made, including quite a lot of soap operas. For the simple reason that nobody can afford to hire twenty writers to pen forty-five minutes' worth of material.
On the other hand... is anybody else.. jsut really not enthused about the coming series?

Guilty as charged. It's Big Finish all the way for me I enjoyed the Flux season, and loved the fabulous 'Power of the Doctor' and the 14th Doctor specials, but then my enthusiasm was killed by goblins. At Christmas too!
If reports say it's all amazingly amazing, I'll watch later.
If not, I have the classic era on my shelves and all of NewWho on iPlayer and the vast magnificence of Big Finish to enjoy, much of it for the first time. (After years of listening, my backlog is still visible across Mutter's Spiral without a telescope. And that's without all the new goodies we're promised. I'm especially waiting for Jo Martin - whenever that first story is - because a) terrific Doctor from the first second she remembered she was the Doctor, and b) the Fugitive Doctor series could do anything. Sort of Unbound, but not.)

Exactly my thoughts. The last TV episode I really enjoyed was Power of the Doctor. The 'specials', I thought, eroded the characters of the Doctor and Donna whilst introducing a host of new characters I couldn't care less about, sadly. Disney-ed up to the max, one might say. I couldn't even make it through the goblins thing, making it the first episode of Doctor Who I have ever not watched through choice.
So I've become a reluctant 'whinger' after all these years!

Also not enthused. The Xmas special was shit. This new era looks shit.
