I can't remember his exact wording, but did anyone else find McGann's comments in the behind the scenes interviews enlightening? All these years some fans remain angry 8 was the Doctor who fought in the time war, yet McGann bears Moffat no ill will, and seems thoroughly invested in the direction and endgame The Night Of The Doctor sets up for the 8th Doctor, he seems to prefer the idea of his doctor as a tragic, noble hero trying to help those caught in the middle of the conflict rather than the blood soaked Dalek-killer some had hoped he would end up as-it's a viewpoint I certainly share, and this boxset does an excellent job at sowing the first seeds of that journey through the conflict to his final moments.
Quite a happy accident as McGann had previously commented how short notice NOTD was, Moffat was apparently still finishing the script on set...

I really liked that Olistra was written quite differently to the John Hurt sets, or at least her relationship with The Doctor is. There were points in that series where War and Ollistra were downright flirting and clearly had a soft spot for her. I like the antagonism here. Shakes things up a little.

McGann has aged very well for his age so perhaps Bf could do their own photoshoot with the costume... Big Finish would need to get permission and secure the costume from the BBC, which may be somewhat difficult. I assume permission was granted when BF did a photo shoot for the "new" 8th Doctor costume when the Dark Eyes series kicked off a few years ago.

My take on this first volume of terrific Time War McGannery is now up at CultBox.

I also hope they provide a continuation to the Doom Coalition stuff, at least to know what happened to Liv and Helen!! BF have said that there will be more boxsets that follow from Doom Coalition. Given how the last one ended, it would be cruel of them not to give us a follow up.

I've seen David Richardson on Twitter as recently as this week responding to someone by saying announcements on this separate 8th Doctor strand of box sets will be released soon.

Started listening to the boxset yesterday, finished the first two stories-great stuff so far, very visual stories with a good balance of timey-wimey shenanigans and easy to follow storyline, I'm liking the way the 8th Doctor is written in the set, noble but naive still striving to look for the joy and wonder in a universe that is fast falling short of it... {Spoiler} Sheena/Emma/Louise didn't last very long did she? Was she A mere redshirt for this story?...or perhaps BF have set up a loose end they will explore eventually... Regarding your spoiler, I was reminded of 7's companion in The Architects of History. I think we'll see her journey one day. To me, it feels too much part of the era NOT to happen.

Not bought a box set since Doom Coalition 1 so was very pleased I took the plunge again with this. Made the time war battles interesting. Hope they can keep that up across three more box sets. Not done the War Doctor yet, so don’t know how they handled it. Just a shame the next one is a year away. I'd strongly recommend listening to the War Doctor series before continuing with future Eighth Doctor box sets. While not essential to listening to this set on it's own, it really does add to the experience.

And that’s the set finished. I thought One Life was quite a low key finale, mostly chatting aboard the TARDIS, but suitably high concept and there’s some lovely stuff in there. I’m glad that Big Finish have now got the TARDIS console room humming effect; I thought that was noticeably absent in the War and Tenth Doctor releases, so I hope it’s put to use in future stories. I think the weak link in the set has been Bliss. She hasn’t done a great deal and spends very little time with the Doctor; I don’t really get a sense of her character. Great set overall, however. I’ve enjoyed each story and I think they’ve included varied and interesting high concept ideas. I’ve also liked the portrayal of the Doctor and his promise to help where he can but will not fight. I’m still not quite persuaded about it being a four set range, but I am looking forward to another instalment and I hope Bliss is better served. Disagree. I understand why Big Finish have put her on the slowburn a bit as a typical companion - it's to add to the inevitable tragedy, but I also feel we got a distinct sense of who she was as well. For me, there were some dark hints about her character: she seemed a little too easy with the Time Regressor and was kind of unfeeling towards Quarren in Echoes of War despite the situation and seems rather too eager to stay with The Doctor rather then returning home and facing up to the responsibility of her classmate's deaths. It's possible The Doctor is going to be have a blind spot for her....

Rakhee Thakrar is atrocious in the role of Bliss - completely unbelievable. I actually found her performance very naturalistic, similar to Sheridan Smith's performance as Lucie (which I imagine was deliberate) which adds a nasty sting to the tale, the face of the casualties of the Time War. She's someone The Doctor feels he has to live up to his ideals for.

Keep in mind that this was originally going to be a one-off. If that was entirely it for Bliss; then it would have been lacking. I’m not convinced the “slowburn” exists.

Just checked the original news article and the recording date: this box set finished recording on the 26th May, the same date as the announcement that Eighth Doctor: Time War was announced as a series, so it seems likely they went into recording with a series in mind. Regarding your spoiler, I was reminded of 7's companion in The Architects of History. I think we'll see her journey one day. To me, it feels too much part of the era NOT to happen. I think that is the whole point of it. It felt like a long term Doctor and friend situation and the Time War erased it. Even the Doctor is not immune to the effects of the Time War. It does a great job of laying out the stakes. I don’t we will or should ever hear from her again.

Well, I was going to listen to a little bit of this and ended up listening to the whole thing, except for the interviews. Loved the stories, couldn't wait to hear what was going to happen next. As an aside, I couldn't believe how many music suite tracks there were. I don't think I've ever seen that many in a box set. I have to admit I jumped over them to get to the next bit of story. I was surprised that they used the War Doctor theme song, I'll always associate it with John Hurt, so that made me feel a little sad. Loved the way The Starship of Theseus started out as though it was going to be any old Eighth Doctor adventure and then progressed from there into what was really happening. Echoes of Time was reminiscent of some of the destruction that was mentioned in the War Doctor sets, with an unexpected "helper" to avoid the dangerous spots. Conscript had me a bit amused to hear Gallifreyans doing typical military unit talk. It's not something you hear often. One Life was a surprise, and I actually found the ending quite sad. Can't wait to see what they do with the next set. In the meantime, I'm going to settle in for a re-listen over the next day or three, and dig into those Behind the Scenes tracks, as well.

Still not got around to buying box set 1 so no spoliers but are we thinking this series is gunna lead directly into Night of the doctor, effectively being the “Last adventure” release for Mcgann or is it going to be left ambiguous? I just feel 16 episodes is already going to be over exploreing the subject, never mind if they commission another set of four boxsets as is the way with big finish. It also would be nice to have an end point in his timeline (aside from the minisode). They can still continue the dark eyes run or go even furthur back eventually but theres only so many time war storys they can do without asking the question why didnt he get involved?

I can't remember the exact wording, or when it was, but I thought it was made clear BF don't intend to get too close in time to the events of NotD,and they're definitely not going to lead directly into it.

My impression from comments I’ve heard is less that they don’t intend it so much as they aren’t interested in doing it any time soon. It’s not like it’s necessary to lead up to it over time—they could do a Last Adventure-style release, and then go back to whatever their regular schedule is. And now that I actually write that out, I think it might be kinda neat to see a four-disc boxset spanning his life. A story with Mary, a story with Charley, a story with Lucie, and one with Liv & Helen.

I usually use the mp3 version on iTunes. But on occasion BF has labeled tracks such that they line up out of order.
