The point being made I think was more that they may feel that by doimg Doctor who on audio so soon after leavin the show, they are sending a subconscious signal "my career's washed up so I'm returning to what made me famous to begin with". Probably the only thing worse they could do about now would be appear on "I'm a celebrity......" Their agents could well be strongly advising against. The last thing I'm actually familiar with is the BBC audios but I was certainly under the impression that the BBC didn't waste much time in making audios with these actors, although some of them seem to be less like the show in format than Big Finish full-casts. I'd at least like to think on that account that there's the chance of Big Finish audios being construed easily enough as simply more of the same business rather than as a career status indicator - if not as simply the actors being sympathetic and generous to us story-starved fan-things also. I mean, it really is fantastic of cast members to return to roles in Big Finish audio that they obviously don't actually have to take. Also, I have no way of knowing exactly how full BF's plate is but they seem to be taking on quite a bit lately. Maybe they could be less ready at the moment than some of the cast for additional returns? I do hope I'm not just trying to shape facts here in order to delude myself that 9th, 11th and 12th Doctor audios from Big Finish are inevitable - I very much would like to think that. I think they did the BBC audios while still in tole on TV so it's not the same thing. From more recent quotes Matt himself seems to be saying he just wants to let some time pass before he comes back.

He was about 41 years old when he played the part. He is just 52 now. It looks like he has two relatively young children. Once they get to the age of watching and enjoying Doctor Who, I wouldn't be surprised if they could convince him to do more work as the Doctor. I would. He'll probably ban his kids from watching Doctor Who. Why would he do that?

I would. He'll probably ban his kids from watching Doctor Who. On the 9th Doctor panel Robert Shearman said that Chris is proud of his work on Doctor Who. And Steven Moffat has said that, when he talked to Eccleston about appearing in Day of the Doctor, that while the latter didn't want to reprise his role, he was still a fan of the New Series, being able to talk knowledgeably about Amy Pond and the like.

I thought Matt had originally been 'put on the spot' regarding Doctor Who audios and was simply being favourable, but mainly 'polite'. If he really is open to the idea, I can fully appreciate and respect his wishes to do it at some point in the future, as opposed to 'now.'
Regarding Christopher Eccleston - he played the part ten years ago. He played it brilliantly, but he clearly wishes to maintain his distance from the show. He's happy to meet fans and is courteous and funny; he also clearly has fond knowledge of the show since his departure. But if he doesn't wish to return to it now - or ever - then that is his decision, and that should be appreciated and respected every bit as much as Matt's. Speculating about what he may nor may not do regarding Doctor Who is highly inappropriate, I feel.

I don't know how anyone could watch this video and believe that he has any bad feelings toward his time on the show. It's mostly regarding his new project but the interviewer is a big Doctor Who fan and they talk about it toward the end. It's a really nice video.

That's really lovely. And that is not a man angry at a role he played ten years ago.

I would. He'll probably ban his kids from watching Doctor Who. You have a serious downer on Christopher Ecclestone, did he do you some serious personal injustice at some stage? No, but it is clear he has a incurable hatred towards the show and whatever behind the scenes stuff he didn't like during the time of shooting series 1.

I have huge respect for the things he does like this - raising awareness of mental conditions - but the problem is he doesn't actually give an opinion about his time on the show, he only says it was 2005 (which we all know). Unless any cut footage for some reason comes out where he talks about it favourably, it's not really an argument for anything (even then - he's on camera and these celebrities tend to adjust their opinions on shows/films they have been in when being filmed).

No, no, it's not clear at all, at least not to me, and even if he does, EVEN, why do you need to hate him?

(refusing to appear in the 50th is not evidence of anything by the way, other than being evidence that he doesn't like to revisit past roles)

Eccleston was not obligated to do anything for the 50th. He's not obligated or required to do anything for us. He's an actor, first and foremost, and an actor who seems to prefer moving on to new roles and new experiences rather than dwelling on the past. Just because he didn't return for the role DOES NOT mean he hates Doctor Who.

This is no different to Tom Baker refusing to be in the Five Doctors. It took years for him to return to Doctor Who and now look at him. Patrick Troughton declined to appear at conventions for many years (and when he did, he would only appear at conventions outside the UK). Just because Eccleston chose not to appear in the 50th anniversary, it doesn't mean he hates Doctor Who or the fans, or will never return to the role. To my knowledge he has never been angry at fans or told them to "get a life" - I have never forgiven Alex Guinness for that. Cheers Tony

OK, I understand, but it's important not to read into that what his motives were. it doesn't mean he hates the show, and we have lots of evidence that he's quite proud of being the ninth doctor.

I think in some ways as Doctor Who fans we're a tiny bit spoiled simply because we are lucky enough that so many actors have returned to Who in one way or another, allowing us to have new stories with them. Every Doctor from One to Ten has returned in one form or another to play the role again save for Nine. Smith is almost certain to return some day, it's just a matter of when. So we wind up with just Eccelston as a hold out, but I don't think we can make any projections about whether he will or won't return some day. If he hated Doctor Who he wouldn't have even sat down with Moffat to hear the pitch for "Day of The Doctor", which he did and by all accounts was totally professional about.

After how hyped it got, I was surprised to learn it had all been about a professional disjunction. Eccleston wanted to have a particular director to work on the special and the BBC were wary because they'd had no prior experience with the said man. In the end, they went for the safer option and the Ninth Doctor bowed out. It all sounded perfectly reasonable from both sides of the debate. My personal philosophy on this subject has always been never say never with Who actors. After all, if never truly meant ever then we wouldn't have Janet Fielding, Carole Ann Ford or Matthew Waterhouse reprising their roles for Big Finish. Considering some of the stories they've come up for Tegan, Susan and Adric (go listen to Psychodrome and Iterations of I, if you haven't yet), it would have been a damn shame. Fielding particularly since the amount of headway they've been able to make with her character since The Gathering is astonishing.

I have no doubt Matt Smith will do Big Finish at some point. As for Eccleston, I wouldn't count him out. He's done radio dramas in the past so I think he'll be open to doing Big Finish. I'm sure Big Finish has approached him and at least put it on the table. I'm sure if they offered him another part first and if he enjoyed the process then I'm sure he'd consider reprising the role of The Doctor.

I'm not all that fussed about New Who Doctors on audio, given I'm not really much of a New Who fan (especially lately) but I did love 11 and Amy and would certainly not be averse if they could get Smithy and Karen back if the stories were good.

hell I would buy 11th doc in a flash (even though he is possibly my least favourite doc, I think Capaldi just edged forward in last series) my only wish he was given a new companion, I hate the ponds, Clara had enough & river steals the show. The Eleventh Doctor and the Ponds was the best TARDIS team I've seen since Rose/Jack/Nine and frankly represent the golden era of Moffat for me, when the series was and felt Doctor Who and was nice and fun to watch, River Song it was always welcoming with its elegance and charisma (not surprisingly that Capaldi finally able be the Doctor in "the Husbands of River Song instead of the old dad Oswald). and Clara Oswald was when everything got worse and she and Danny ruin the Capaldi era for me.
