I haven't seen this mentioned yet, but I thought people would be interested to know that Matt Smith was asked if he'd join David Tennant and John Hurt in reprising his role for Big Finish, and whilst he said he hasn't been asked yet, he'd be willing to do it. Looks like it's only a matter of time until Eleven joins BF too. For anyone interested, the interview is here.

Thanks for that. Smith was supposed have appeared at Wizard World here in New Orleans and I was planning on asking him about Big Finish but he, and Karen Gillian, canceled last minute, so I wasn't able to. I'm ready for 11th Doctor audios thankyouverymuch.

I guess all this new content being available to BF is as much a problem as it is an opportunity, it's clear many people are at or beyond saturation point (at least in the current pricing models) and BF also have limited resources. Obviously both those things either diminish or go away if adding the new content also adds new customers, but you can understand why BF might need a little while to digest all the possibilities that the new content allows.

BF may like being a smaller company, but in order to keep up with demand, it may be time for them to do some major hiring, and build more studios, or miss the boat and lose the ride in the future.

Not sure where, at least for now, the competition to bid for BF's licence would come from, they are now I would suspect the largest company in their field, and the BBC is extremely unlikely to in-house audio production, it doesn't fit with their charter, it would take a brave company willing to take on what BF's does and wrest the licence from them, always possible, but I think fairly unlikely, at least for the time being.
But as for liking being small, I don't get that impression of Jason Haigh-Ellery (the guy that owns BF), but rushing headlong into expansion has it own dangers.

I also find it a little difficult to believe that Big Finish hasn't made at least exploratory phone calls to Smith's representatives. 11th Doctor audios will be huge. I get wanting your best people on the project and that time & manpower resources have their limits but really, he hasn't been asked yet? If Smith is willing, which doesn't surprise me at all based on his comments when he was leaving the show, if you are Big Finish you have to make this happen.

Well, that's me proven wrong, then
I'm VERY surprised he's ready to return to the role so soon, though!

Don't worry, I'm sure Nick has no plans for it to occur to him to give Matt a call now that they have a New Who license. ;-) I like Matt's attitude though, and Eleventh Doctor audios would be fantastic. Hope there are some in the nearer future.

I have always thought that 11th Doctor audios were a matter of when and not if. As of that article, I see that that's still the case.

I'm actually glad that 11th Doctor audios are still in the future. Not because I don't want them. I do, very much, but it does give us some time to digest and enjoy all the other new Who audios. I mean, we just got 10th and War Doctor audios. That's two more Doctors! I'm still reeling with excitement. I am 100% certain Eleven will happen at Big Finish, but I do like having a chance to savor what we've got. It's such a delicious feast, after all. I feel like we have this amazing embarrassment of riches. The Big Finish offices much be an incredibly exciting place to work these days.

While they haven't spoken to Matt they could well have made an initial inquiry to his agent, been told his daily rate, and said "ah never mind, don't bother him".
I think the commercial success of the Ten and Donna set will be key in helping the understand the viability of a future eleven range. It may be that they need to wait until Matt is less in demand. (I know Tennant is busy as well, but as a cinema star I'm guessing Matt is expensive). It's a fickle industry, o lets wait and see.

I struggle to believe that Smith's day rates would be greater than Tennant's.

It'd be hillarious if this is all just ploy to promote Matt Smith's current work and he is already signed up

Crikey! I can't keep up with everything as it is... can my wallet handle 11th Doctor audios as well?!

Call me controversial but for me it just feels too soon. He only left 2 years ago. I just don't feel enough time has passed for me to miss him. Don't get me wrong It's good that he is willing to do it but I would have liked a bit more time inbetween leaving and joining big finish. Also big finish are so busy that they are only doing 1 big finish convention this year instead of 2. Would they have the time?

I'm sure it's not imminent. Having waited so long to get the Nu-Who licence, I don't think BF would be naive enough to launch all their biggest potential new ranges in the space of a year. There would be nowhere higher to go than having 10 and 11DAs. They'd peak so early. I think we're still a year or two away from 11DAs, if I had to guess.
When the next Doctor takes over and after the next round of licence renegotiation occur, Capaldi's Doctor being fair game for BF is one of my most exciting prospects.

I struggle to believe that Smith's day rates would be greater than Tennant's. Movie economics are nothing like Netflix series economics. Matt's had a good run of getting cinema roles recently, where Tennant hasn't, but Hollywood can be notoriously fickle. He doesn't have to be too expensive to be affordable for Big Finish to rule him out, he just has to be a bit more expensive than everyone else.

Looking at this realistically, Matt has been asked if he would consider taking part in Doctor Who audios. He's hardly likely to say, "No chance, stuff that." Even if that is the way he really felt (which I'm sure it isn't). I think we'll get Eleventh Doctor audios one day, and that makes me happy. I hope so, but I'm not so starved of audio Doctor Who that I'm crying out for it. When/if they do happen (and I think it will be a 'when'), they'll be brilliant, if only because Matt has a very distinctive and expressive voice.

I think even Tennant joining feels a bit soon, it doesn't have the nostalgia feel of classic Doctor's does it. Maybe nostalgia kicks in after ten years, hence everyone saying they'd like more ninth doctor. And the busyness is a real concern. You can't just magic more producers, directors and writers out of thin air. We're quick to jump on them with criticism when we think the quality is dropping and poor Dorney and Fitton can only produce so many scripts per day.

I think only having 1 season of 9 probably is a major factor in the requests for 9th doctor audios. we would be more than quick to jump on those new additions if they didn't live up to standards set by dorney and fitton.
