Clearly, the answer is to build a wall between us and space...
...and make THEM pay for it!
It does appear to be a valid msn link, so I'm hoping/betting that our legs are being pulled. We are far too utterly ignorant, stupid, and hopelessly violent as a species to be making first contact.
[EDIT: I also don't see this reported on anything like nytimes or even things like huffingtonpost. MSN pulling a fast one?}

I really hope it's true. I just want to know what governments are hiding worldwide. I tend to suspect that the chances of an alien encounter will go well at this stage (or perhaps ever) are slim to the point of possibly approaching zero. I suspect Stanislaw Lem (sci-fi writer from 50s-70s) is most likely correct that communication problems will be insurmountable. There are the added problems inherent in the fact that an alien species contacting us is almost certain to be vastly more advanced, and so we'd have to pray that they are more or less pacifists. Otherwise we will look like stone age savages inhabiting a planet ripe for mineral/etc excavation, etc. It's nice to dream, but thinks like universal translation, faster than light travel, time travel, etc, may ultimately prove to be an impossibility for large-mass bodies. And if someone else gets here with them, they are likely eons in advance of our civilization at the very least. There is also the unlikely possibility that a pathogen from one could decimate the other, though inter-species disease transmission is rare enough when localized to a planet. Anyway, if this isn't just a joke, I suspect the information is more along the lines of "things we detected/observed but cannot currently explain" rather than the "we found a crashed ship" variety.

Anyway, if this isn't just a joke, I suspect the information is more along the lines of "things we detected/observed but cannot currently explain" rather than the "we found a crashed ship" variety. I think if Barack Obama or anyone in power were to reveal existence of alien life, it would undoubtedly cause a lot of problems. I'm not just talking as you were about if the aliens are more advanced/how they would view us but how we would react too. It would probably create mass paranoia and a lot of the world population acting irrationally towards the idea. There'd inevitably be a lot of racism towards the aliens and what would later become derogatory terms in years to come when we'd be more used to them. There'd be many questions raised in parliament too concerning immigration and how we react to alien life. Equally, though it would be a very exciting time to be alive and many of us would welcome the aliens with open arms. In my view, they would be innocent until proven guilty. I wouldn't see them as hostile unless they were hostile towards us. If they are of a decent sort they may even trade resources and knowledge with us. A major factor would probably be how we would treat them. My guess is that the Queen would be required to make a speech and greet the aliens along with Obama. Obviously they would be closely guarded with security. I imagine it would be a tense moment for many worldwide as nobody would know how the aliens would react towards the two most powerful people in the world. You are probably right that if there's anything it'll be likely nothing but if governments worldwide are hiding existence of alien life (personally, I believe they are) I wish they would stop and just be honest instead of treating the rest of the world like children who cannot cope with such knowledge.

I think everyone here is way over thinking things, *if* any announcement at all is made, I'm expecting it to be, "there is this stuff and things we previously covered up, from all over the world and covering many decades, some of it seems like it must be of alien origin but there's no proof, it just seems the most likely explanation."

Whilst it is speculation, I think it's clear that governments worldwide are hiding something. Otherwise why not debunk it all and say there's no alien life discovered?

As far as I'm aware that's exactly what most governments have been doing. But the conspiracy theorists claim that that very activity is proof of a cover up.
So wait and see, apparently we will learn all in the next few days, I can't get excited by it, I'll wait for reality, see if its worth getting all excited about.

Everyone please keep in mind that "alien life" doesn't imply that the alien life is intelligent, self-aware, animal-like, or even larger than a microbe.
It is quite likely that our first "contact" with alien life will come in the form of alien microbes or residue attributed to ancient microbes.

When the BBC report this I will start think, yeah, maybe, when I see it actually happen I will believe it. Until then... meh. BTW, for those that wonder why The Mirror, Express and other UK nationals would report this, but so far the BBC have made no mention of it, well it's probably because the BBC always try to ensure that anything they report has a credible source, that the BBC have so far failed to report on this is a fairly strong hint that no credible source exists. If/when the BBC do report on this, check if they are reporting about what other people are reporting, or if they are reporting themselves, if it's the former it tends to be because despite the lack of credible source, the rumour has got to the point where they can't not report on it, but the fact they are reporting the reports rather than reporting the thing itself still screams "no credible source".
