I still think two four disc sets a year for each Doctor. That would replace the multi-doctor trilogy as well and give us 24 discs a month.

Cheers. That is something of a relief. So, the same content, but in different packaging, it seems? As a download subscriber to the main range, it seems no huge change is in the offing. Good! I like the main range.

I like the idea of having a monthly main range realease, as is currently done. But if I'm honest with myself, I don't actually listen to them that way. I tend to listen to a bunch of MR releases in a row. So a change like that probably won't make a big difference to me in the long run. The only thing that would change for me is no longer getting a free gift with a 12-release MR sub. I really enjoy picking out my free gift.

I'm not going to get too worked up. My supersub has a few years left to run so as long as the same amount of stories I paid for are accounted for in my sub - in whatever permutation - I'm happy. By the time of this new model being upon us we have no idea what the status quo will be with all the ranges. A couple of the Doctors or companions may retire or slow down in that time, the new series releases may get more prolific, other opportunities may open up....it's all so far away I'm not feeling qualified to hypothesise on what could be a totally unrecognisable release slate. It could be a couple of years, it could be when the next renewal happens, it could be when supersubs run out...things can change so much in that time.

I like the main range. Except you've got to call it Monthly not Main (Despite the fact it provides a regular flow of income short and long term).

I'm wondering if this years April-June trilogy is a pilot for the Boxset idea (2 shorter stories per Doctor) could be 4 shorter stories per Doctor Boxset with the remaining Boxset being focused on a specific setting/enemy/companion?

Oh, yes, I would definitely miss the free short trips. And the extended extras, to some extent, though sometimes they don't add that much more content to the edited extras. The script PDFs are a nice perk, too. I don't always use them as much as I thought I would, but it's nice to have them to refer to if I need clarification (in written word form) on what's going on in the story.

I'd miss the Short Trips (after only getting the last few), pdfs I'm not bothered about (but can see how they could be useful). Unfortunately I find the extended extras to be generally meh and wouldn't miss them at all. Cheers Tony

Nick Brigs confirms on his facebook long term plan for main range is to turn completely to boxsets. My thoughts are: ****, damn, and ****! I love having a monthly release. I really do not want to go months between MR releases. The only way this works for me is if they increase the production to the point where there is a box set containing an acting Doctor in each month (aka, not narrated CCs, not Doctor-absent releases). Then again, my vote doesn't count because I'll still end up buying them. For it to count, I'd actually have to refuse to buy them as a result of the change.

I guess I won't mind as long as we continue to get the 2 hr stories broke up into 30 minute eps. I really like that format. I also assume this change wouldn't happen after 2020. People are subscribed through then correct? That too. I'd hate if if they all went to 1h releases.

I hate change and I hate box sets!
I would rather the Doctor Who Main Range continues as it always has done, a release every month dropping through my letter-box - and/or in to my download account - until the men in the black car with the oblong box arrive at my house. It's the one constant thing in my life since the Summer of 2000... If it's Nick's idea, sack him Jason!
Box sets? Bah!

After 204 releases I stopped my main range subscription. I still have at least one release coming through my letter box every month and honestly I don't miss it, plus in the future I now have the potential to enjoy sale items!
If they had moved to Trilogy release box-sets (assuming they would be less than the current £45) I would have purchased The Master Trilogy and The Sixth Doctor sets. For me the move to box sets makes perfect sense. However, as has been mooted before, I think the downloads should go to an episode each and every week.

Box sets suck.
And with my spending on BF already falling anyway, it may end up killing my involvement with the current releases all together.

I'm wondering if this years April-June trilogy is a pilot for the Boxset idea (2 shorter stories per Doctor) could be 4 shorter stories per Doctor Boxset with the remaining Boxset being focused on a specific setting/enemy/companion? Regards mark687 I don't follow the monthly range (although I have all the McGann stories and a scattering of other MR stories from the 5th,6th and 7th it's not something I can commit to on a regular basis for financial reasons, and I haven't seen much of the 5th-7th Doctors eras on TV yet anyway) but I really do feel that the 4x25 minute monthly format should be kept for as long as possible, the MR was the backbone of BF's success for so many years, and just because boxsets have been successful in recent years at bringing in new listeners (and suit McGann's Doctor) it doesn't mean transferring the 5th-7th Doctors to boxsets would replicate that success, nor retain the audience, BF would risk throwing away a long standing and popular tradition in an attempt to gain an audience who might not be interested, and for those who follow the MR there is probably something quite reassuring about receiving a Double Disc story through the post/account on the dot every month. As for the shorter stories in the MR, I'm all for it on a semi regular basis, experimenting more with the format and characters (whilst still retaining a balance of the old 4x25 stories) could be a good thing for the MR, when was the last 6 parter?

(Though most of the stories I've bought are 8th Doctor stories, and as the wilderness years Doctor with an ongoing story the 4x1 Hour format isn't breaking any traditions, it's probably easier for new listeners to commit to rather than a daunting run of multiple stand alone 4 parters)

My first purchase from Big Finish was 17 December 2014, and I was overwhelmed by the number of ranges and the number of items in the Monthly Range (194 Rani Elite had just been released). I even did the maths on how much it would cost to catch up in that range alone. (I did eventually start by picking up the first 12 releases...and loved them.)
I think it would be useful to compress the range so it doesn't overwhelm new customers. "262 items?! I'll never catch up!" Box sets (and effectively dropping the price per story) would help but I'm not sure how they do that. What pre-trilogy stories do they collect together (apart from the Eighth Doctor 'seasons')?
As for the trilogies, it would make sense to collect them together but Big Finish does not do 6-disc box sets. And what happens to customers who already own some, but not all, stories in a box set? I suppose Big Finish could stop selling the existing releases but still keep them in download accounts.

Another issue is the recent-ish jump in postage. As a download-only customer, I'm not sure whether box sets would mitigate that or not. I'm also not sure how much the CD super-sub postage charge was, compared to 3x12-month and 1x6-month subscriptions. Thoughts, anyone?
As to the episode lengths, I would like to see the 4x25s continue, but I would like to see hour-long stories in addition. (Actually, I want to see more arc-heavy box sets ala Sixth Doctor Last Adventure, so the April-June trilogy may not be what I'm looking for there.)

The point about being overwhelmed is a good one, when I first checked out the BF website I was so daunted and confused I wasn't sure where to start. Obviously some of the stories have a pretty vague chronological placement but I think it would be useful to add a timeline to each of the collected Doctors pages. If BF did move towards boxsets for MR stories perhaps it would enable them to double up on some of the cast, potentially cutting costs and lowering prices a little.
