Thank you both for my 'new fact for the day' (after a quick visit to Google!) Though I was still left scratching my head for a minute until I remembered LA is the state 'code'. We call those two letter designations for US states abbreviations, not codes. We also have zip codes, which are more specific in terms of the location they designate and intended to help the mail get where it's supposed to go. True, abbreviations, thanks! It was very late here... Yes, zip codes - we have family and friends in the U.S. and we even still sometimes send actual post with an envelope and a stamp on! It feels like an historical re-enactment almost, but we do it for special occasions. While we're on the subject, is there an answer to the mystery of why some state abbreviations use the first two letters (WA, OR, CA) but others (LA not LO) don't, even if there is no clash with another state? (So, AK not AL) Or is it just historical accident? (Our county abbreviations are lost in the mists of time: Buckinghamshire=Bucks and Hertfordshire=Herts, but Hampshire=Hants and Shropshire=Salop, for starters...)

Salop is actually an alternative name for Shropshire, as well as an abbreviation, and was the county's legal name until the early 1980s when the council voted to change it.

I wanted to shout, ooh, ooh, I know what it means. But of course he couldn't hear me. And, also, I figured you'd tell him first, since I don't usually listen right away. I was shouting it out.

Well, that's an interesting question. The abbreviations weren't always two letters. They were shortened to two letter abbreviations in late 1963 to make postal delivery easier. You can see the history of state abbreviations here. The current abbreviations were selected mainly to avoid confusion. Some abbreviations are obvious, others, not so much. Apparently there are rules for state abbreviations: I found a couple of interesting threads on the etymology of state abbreviations: english.stackexchange.com/questions/60654/what-are-the-patterns-rules-for-determining-u-s-state-abbreviationshttps://www.reddit.com/r/explainlikeimfive/comments/3bvvrs/eli5_the_logic_behind_the_us_state_abbreviations/ Apparently some abbreviations (MO for Missouri, for example) are a shortening of older abbreviations (MISO), rather than following the rules. I imagine AK for Alaska avoids confusing with Alabama (currently abbreviated AL, but if you used AA, there would be confusion as to whether you meant AlabamA or AlaskA). Nebraska was originally abbreviated NB but was changed to NE to avoid confusing it with New Brunswick, Canada. And that's probably more than you ever wanted to know about state abbreviations.

The more I think about it, the First Doctor Adventures and Deborah Watling's death have put a bit of a spanner in the works for this series, the former more than the latter (I can live with no more Victoria stories). Carole Anne Ford and William Russell clearly aren't going to be used for any more First Doctor Adventures, and if they are it will be for some sort of anniversary or Short Trip if at all. The Early Adventures for the First Doctor have almost become a moot point because of David Bradley's recasting, and who knows BF might decide to get Reece Shearsmith as the Second Doctor for his own series. It seems likely the range might be discontinued with this news and what with last series having three out of four be Ben, Polly and Jamie stories and one be a Jamie and Zoe work. As much as I love Jamie, I like the Early Adventures showing different TARDIS teams each story, which is why I think the first and third series are the best. Now we've got Vicki and Steven in every release this series, which makes me worry for the likes of Jean Marsh as Sara or even a Ben and Polly story or a Steven solo release. I'm sure the stories will be excellent as with BF they usually are, I just miss the variety this and the monthly Companion Chronicles used to have and I just wonder whether the range will last.

Ooh, I love the Dalek title! Is it ONLY Vicki and Steven? Does this mean no Ian/Barbara/Susan/Sara? I suppose this depends on whether W.Russell retired and whether or not Big Finish would run those original cast members parallel to the recast team (I sure hope they would, if Russell is willing).

I suppose this depends on whether W.Russell retired and whether or not Big Finish would run those original cast members parallel to the recast team (I sure hope they would, if Russell is willing). Well the end of The Sontarans led back into Daleks’ Master Plan, so my guess is that they intended to retire the character of Sara Kingdom, or at least as played by Jean Marsh, which makes sense really. William Russell has apparently said that he’d still like to do Big Finish but I’m fairly sure he’s supposed to be retired now due to ill health. I doubt he’ll be back at Big Finish to be honest. With Russell out of the mix, that pretty much means they either replace him with Jamie Glover or end stop using the original team (and the variation with Vicki in the EAs), I’m fairly sure that they would still run the 1DAs with the original team and EAs with the original team parallel, but I think it’s just a coincidence that the 1DAs have came out around the same time as Russell’s retirement. Either theyll continue with just Steven and Vicki, or maybe throw others into the mix like Ben and Polly or even potentially Oliver Harper, or they’ll just make The Early Adventures purely Second Doctor Stories.

I think the next few runs of EAs (if there are to be more after this lot) will each be split 2:2 - the First Doctor stories featuring Vicki/Steven and Ben/Polly, and the Second Doctor's Ben/Polly/Jamie and Jamie/Zoe.

There was a mention recently of more Jamie/Zoe to come, hope so. I like all of these TARDIS crews so any combination would be fine with me - just keep making the EAs please BF, they are a great range. Only problem: 4 releases in a series is not enough!

Perhaps Susan and Ben/Polly will be in the next set of CC's instead.
