I've never read a single Who comic strip beyond a couple of Eight stories in 'Radio Times' years ago, so this set was a journey into the unknown and what a wild ride..!!
The Iron Legion Two hours of bonkers, non-stop, high-energy action with Tom magnificent in sizzling form and the great guest cast giving it CX percentus! It's like no Who I've ever heard before, the closest I can describe the experience as is: like hearing an animated cartoon drawn in bold lines and vivid colour - and I guess that's exactly the effect they were going for; stonkingly brilliant sound design by Alistair Lock too. A few highlights: Morris good. Morris hero. Me like. Toby Longworth's voice of Vesuvius reminded me so much of Ronnie Barker's Arkwright from 'Open All Hours'; excellent and I liked the historian's knowledge ultimately being more powerful than the whole Iron Legion.
I love the Hollywood Roman and Biblical epics from the 60s/70s but I am so slow on the uptake sometimes and I roared with laughter when I finally caught on to the name Douglas Kirk. He is Barbarius! (And yes I did spot the Doctor's reference to Charltonus Hestonius at the chariot racing!) Doug and Viv, great couple. I thought the Malevolus were an excellent half-time twist, the evil 'gods' of New Rome behind the military dictator Ironicus and his very classical murderous Roman power-grab. Of course, they are aliens with a spaceship, but perhaps the four fiery-winged demonic brothers were created as an evil inversion of the four fiery, winged beings who support the Throne at the start of the Book of Ezekiel ? Plus the fifth demon Magog, most evil of all, is also referred to in Ezekiel as a home of evil and violence. (Magog is sometimes seen as a person and sometimes as a place and it's surprising that that Gog/Magog haven't turned up in some form in 'Doctor Who' before.)
But that's more than enough serious comment - Ironicus Leigionus riotus maxi-maximus est, audius splendidus! (That's not really Latin but it's the best I can manage with my chest light off. )

Wow is all I can say. I've only listened to The Iron Legion but what a fantastic adaptation of the comic book. & for me one of the most entertaining BF releases I've heard in a long time. Tom Baker seems to be enjoying himself immensely.

A tightly-packed action-adventure in style and substance! Adaptation is always difficult, particularly from one medium to the next. It's a lot like flying the TARDIS in many ways. You have to carefully balance each system against your departure/arrival point, calculate relative travelordinates, stabilise for the relative gravitational conversions and then -- pull the lever into nothingness and see what happens.
And out from the adaptational threshold, comes The Iron Legion: a story that not only feels as though it belongs in its new medium, it actively rules it. There's never a moment of awkward transition, the entire cast are firing on all cylinders and the audio design is astonishingly sharp. From the roll of tanks, to the roar of the Colosseum, to the sneer of the Malevilus. And not for one moment, does the Rome Never Fell idea feel old-hat. Indeed, it's the most vibrant I've heard. My imagination was never this good reading the originals.
If you make only one purchase from Big Finish this March, make it this one. A triumph brimming with wit in every aspect. Genuine wit. Jolly well done all, and, oh, hail Caesar, if that's your thing.

You've heard them already? Scraping the barrel. Really? Comic adaptations? It is worth remembering just how consistently wrong he was.

I was going to let this one pass me by (in 1979/80 I was more into the Star Wars comic strips rather than the Doctor Who ones), but reading through the glowing reviews here and elsewhere and listening to the trailer a couple of times my resistance is crumbling..
My listening ear therefore thanks you all in advance. My backlog...not so much. 😊

It is worth remembering just how consistently wrong he was. He should be consigned to the rubbish bin. Erased from our collective memory. That's a tad harsh. However, as a supposed fan of 'classic era' Doctor Who Paul is the loser on this one, as these two Fourth Doctor stories are f*@*ing brilliant. Bonkers, but brilliant! They might be comic strip adaptations but write them off at your peril. So it's his loss.

Anyway, finished this set now. The Star Beast is great. Will be listening to this set again very soon. Hope we get more.

Well that was utterly bizarre set of stories but two of the most enjoyable & entertaining Fourth Doctor audio dramas I've listened to in years,Tom Baker is at his bonkers eccentric brilliant best as The Doctor & the stories feature great supporting characters with great humour & drama.
Refreshingly entertaining loved it, 5/5.

Took me a while but I’ve been listening to The Iron Legion which has been great fun. I’m not familiar with the original story, it’s on my list to get in the panini graphic novels.

Is there any image at all of Rhianne in character as Sharon? If not, then why? I thought she'd be on the cover, just like Yasmin and Travis were on their Novel Adaptations. Weird...

I was about to post that very comment when I read your post. Particularly during his first scene, I kept expecting to hear a "G-G-G-Granvile"

Star beast was equally good. Very different to Iron Legion, but really enjoyable.
Hearing the word "wazzok", however it is spelt, brought a smile of nostalgia to my face. Haven't heard anyone called that since the playground in primary school. That, plus the pink wafers, really evoked the 80s for me.
10/10 and glad to see Alan Barnes is going out on a high.
Would like to hear more of 4 and Sharon, either further comic adaptations or else original stories.
