The steelbook is gorgeous and it’s proudly say in between Power of the Daleks and Shada. I’ve not got round to watching any of the content yet, but I’m very much looking forward to it.
What are everyone’s thoughts so far?

Just found an unexpected delivery in the porch. DVD arrived today, despite only ordering yesterday morning and choosing free delivery by bundling in a pre-order of volume 2 of the Lost Episodes collection (due September). A strange feeling on reversing the sleeve, to think that I am still adding new releases to the Classic series range, some 16 years since I started getting them in this format. Still tops for VAM content too. It's always a let down when giving extras on the likes of ST:TOS or Superman Blu-Ray (for e.g.) a spin, only to find the 'extras' are 20 years old and edited down to little more than brief soundbites, as if people charge per the minute for their contributions.

Finished The Macra Terror this morning with a cup of tea. As a story, I knew nothing about it, but it’s great, I really enjoyed it.
I don’t think it’s fair to compare these recent projects to the likes of The Invasion, The Ice Warriors, etc. as they’re aiming for different things. I certainly think The Macra Terror has struck the best balance out of the three (Power of the Daleks and Shada). It’s probably not a 100% accurate recon - there’s a scene missing for a start - but I’d say a reimagining is the best way to approach a completely missing story. Faithful with the dialogue and story beats, but change the designs a little, give the story a better sense of scale. It brings everything together that little bit better.
The character animation is much more detailed and they’ve moved away from the more hand drawn style, which was nice, but this now gives them a more fluid animation. The characters move and interact better than before, which only helps to draw you into the story more. Previously I felt that the very detailed backgrounds didn’t contrast with the rather basic characters as well as they could, but you don’t get that here. The style and movement of the Doctor in particular is a highlight; they’ve nailed Patrick Troughton.
The colour animation is gorgeous. It’s got a pastel, almost technicolour, palette and looks great. The black and white opening is very well done and leads in to a big surprise, which I didn’t expect but love!
Very happy with this. My personal hope would be for a Hartnell story next. The Daleks’ Master Plan isn’t realistic, so maybe The Smugglers would be nice. It’s another story I know little about, but they’ve got the assets for Ben & Polly and I think the team could do wonders with the Cornish scenery.

For what it’s worth, the Gridlock disc on the steelbook is just the upscale from the Series 3 BluRay. I wasn’t expecting it to be properly restored, but it would’ve been a great back door pilot for the revived series in The Collection and a nice exclusive for the steelbook.

I suppose they could blame the desire to reproduce the smaller scale sets in earlier animations for the fact that the characters often appeared to walk sideways everywhere, like crabs I listened to the Smugglers a few months back and loved it. Likewise the Savages, once I had worked through the telesnaps on the archived BBC webpages. They are still there and easier to view than those in the DWM specials which need a magnifying glass. Two underrated stories of a style of Who we never really saw again after the Highlanders (Smugglers) , and the Kroutons and Dominators (Savages).

So is anyone on this side of the pond somewhat bitter that BBC can't be bothered to even release a digital version of the story here in the states? I'd love to support these releases but I really can't do that when i have no legal option of seeing them.

If you have access to a vpn (or similar) to bypass geoblocking, Australia'a ABC iview digital service might have it available for online viewing shortly after local release. They had both the Power of the Daleks and the Shada animations there free-to-view for a while, not long after they came out (both gone again now).

Especially with how soon we get the season boxes (albeit in a severely downgraded form packaging wise) you'd think they'd be cranking them out on this side of the pond.

The last time I tried a new Doctor Who Blu-ray shipped from the UK (for Shada), the discs wouldn't play properly in my US player. The disc would start to load the menu, but the player decided I was blind and kept describing the content of the disc and the menu options aloud. I was not able to select anything from the menu nor could I play the content.
I expect this release would have the same issue.

Not out for Region 1 on amazon until Oct.
So I ordered Region 2. I dedicated my Apple drive to R2, and the downstairs blu-ray player is R1

It's clearly not an acccurate recreation but I enjoyed it a lot, though comparing the scene where Polly gets attacked by the Marcra between the animation and live action is quite funny. Speaking of whom; I guess they couldn't animate her haircut as she's the only character who doesn't look anything like the real actor.
And does anyone know why these animations always have horrible aliasing when depicting straight lines at an angle? It's very distracting.

In the original Polly starts off with long hair, following directly on from The Moonbase, and gets a haircut midway through episode 1, but in these she has short their from the start. I can cope with the cut scene, but this discontinuity really bugs me

If you've got a PS4, I've been able to play this and all other UK Bluray imports on that. Not been able to on any of my other Bluray players, unfortunately.
