Netflix is dropping all Doctor Who, Classic and new. I've yet to see a story saying that Doctor Who is being dropped from Hulu. Just rumors, no actual news links. Edit: Apparently it is true that Doctor Who is leaving Hulu, according to this tweet.

Don't panic, everyone. The BBC and the various streaming services just have to make a new deal. Just chill.

Doesn't sound like a new deal is in any way imminent, based on the tweets from both Netflix and Hulu.

this just goes to show how long term these streaming services will not work....too many contracts to run out, too many trying to set up service for their own content, leaving people disappointed and unwilling to pay multi subscription fees.
unless we get a global service having everything all the time, people will get disillusioned. (like paying for sky movies £40 a month for endless repeats, with new content being kept on rental for ages)
I am fed up with Netflix already I need to be able to download content to ipad!, it takes me too long to get through a box set, (5 weeks for daredevil, still only 50% through j/jones) so currently working out more expensive than buying a box set (once it's been out for a few weeks) amazon aint much better, but have been more interested in their content than Netflix's and can download to ipad.
nothing beats owning your own copy...we need drm free video content to buy! other wise DVD & Blu-Ray, will still be king.

I do prefer Amazon because I can download and keep stuff. its still rare to find any form of online service that's cheaper than second hand DVDs though.

I use Netflix often, and the 8.99 I pay easily is cheaper than the amount I would for the movies/shows at even heavily discounted prices.

They don't appear to be dropping Torchwood. I was actually thinking of changing the name of the thread to "Netflix dropping Doctor Who" and moving the thread to the Doctor Who board. That is, if it's okay with the thread starter, gljohnson17.

Does the BBC never tire of shooting themselves in the foot? Being an antiquated person who watches antiquated TV shows, I'm actually very hard to interest in anything that starts with a lower-case "i" (for incompatible, incomplete, or just irritating?) or is festooned with fruit that someone else already took a bite out of.
Besides, I don't know how they (who get none of my money) can look on the success that their license holders Big Finish (who get all of my money) are having by making things more accessible and then somehow decide that making things less accessible is the way to go.
I guess it answers the question of what I'm going to do once I own the entire Big Finish DW catalog, though - buy more used DVDs, apparently.

Whoa, whoa, whoa guys.... there's one VERY important word missing in this thread: streaming. Netflix also has the DVD service, and from all I've seen, they're not dropping Who from that. (And that's typically how the wife and I have been going through the original run again. Don't mind waiting a few days inbetween episodes). It's only the streaming. Another article from the same site/day as the article Davy linked to: zap2it.com/2016/01/doctor-who-episodes-you-need-to-watch-netflix/"Sit down, Whovians. There’s some bad news you need to hear. As of Feb. 1, “Doctor Who” will no longer be available to stream on Netflix. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but one you can’t really change. With less than a week left before they’re gone, what’s a fan to do? Well, if you’ve got an abundance of time, go ahead and binge your way through every episode available. That doesn’t sound very likely though, especially for new fans who haven’t seen them all before. Luckily, Zap2it has the important episodes you need to watch from the relaunched version of the series while you still can."

God dam it. I use Netflix for pretty much all of my New Who viewing, and Hulu for most of my Classic Who viewing. I've got about a million Classic DVDs, but that means that I can pretty much only watch my all time favorite episodes. I barely have any DVDs/Blu-rays of the New Series. How do they expect us to watch the show?

Netflix streaming and DVD service costs twice as much as a streaming subscription without the DVD service. I'm not signing up for the DVD service just to get Doctor Who on DVD. I wouldn't rent enough additional DVDs to make it worth the extra expense.

Plus, I would much rather stream than rent DVDs.

They did announce this awhile ago but most of the articles hinted Doctor Who wouldn't be on it. This of course may have changed. However since I don't subscribe to Netflix or Hulu I may subscribe to a BBC service since I tend to prefer TV from the UK. I do have cable though and I subscribe to 2 anime streaming services so I would have to think if the content was worth the cost. Just stuff that will air on BBC America or other cable networks would not be worth the cost for me.

Why can't everything just be in one place?

I think all the Networks have seen Netflix steal too much of their market and they're going to try and combat that by retaining their own product more often. That said, Netflix are coming out with shows like Daredevil, House Of Cards, Orange Is The New Black etc, so they're obviously building their own homespun library where losing rights wouldn't be an issue. A friend of mine in Canada said on facebook he got rid of cable because Hulu and Netflix had everything he needs, but there's now so many other streaming sites he's got to get to have what he likes that he's paying pretty much what cable cost in the first place.

It's not really a surprise that the content providers are starting to jump into the streaming game. You should have known the days of one site for all content was not going to last.

I really have no idea how the economics behind any of this worked. I assumed that they were getting enough money from Netflix for it to be worth it, but I guess I was wrong. When does the new BBC streaming service come out?
