The Lost Stories: Power Play
It was very good to hear Victoria return but I think they could have done more with her reunion with the Doctor. A little heart-to-hearts chat like they had in 'Tomb of the Cybermen' would have been nice to hear, plus a few references to their past adventures. (As this was an 'energy' story, surely we were due a nod to 'Fury From the Deep' with its gas extraction storyline. Maybe her life at that base was what got Victoria interested in energy environmentalism?)
Other than Victoria, a routine sort of 80s Who which I could easily imagine being broadcast back then and for me that made it a fun, authentic listen and I liked the idea that the energy protestors were now more worried about a new energy source causing earth tremors than they were about 'routine' nuclear power - that now seems very prescient writing in this age of 'fracking' and climate change. An excellent villain and lurking behind him - {Spoiler} The Terrible Zodin! Well, well. I never believed she really existed!
And with that, my listening is finally complete for one more range. I owe The Lost Stories a big 'thank you'; as a classic Who fan, it was my way into BF after 'The Light at the End' and a splendid range it is, spanning all the classic Doctors and filled with wonderful voices from the past. And I'm extremely pleased to say I'm only 'complete' for a few weeks. Fourth Doctor Lost Stories docking at Space Station Nerva, resistance is futile!

The War Doctor - Only the Monstrous.
This remains my favourite of the four box-sets. It's hard to believe it is already six years old - and harder too, that two of the main players are no longer with us. A terrific, immersive opener.

Finished MR: Red Dawn which I started last week.
Going to relisten to J&L Series 3 this afternoon. Edit: Dead Men's Tales done, very enjoyable (especially Leela's standard bar maid chat).
Decided to really listen to SJS: The Tao Connection and Ghost Town, which I didnt get round to the other day (heard Test of Nerve not long ago btw)
Ps: the character of Will Butley reminds me of the wizened old bloke in the wheelchair from Big Trouble in Little China, it just pops in there when I hear him.
And to finish the evening, Iterations of I.

As my copy arrived from Ebay recently, today I've been listening to 'The Eye Of The Scorpion' in town today, which I have been really enjoying!
I think I might have heard to it once before years & years ago, but couldn't really remember much more than the end of part 1 and that there was probably an eclipse somewhere, so it's been nice to, essentially, listen to it again for the first time (I'd completely forgotten about 'the cell', for example). I've just finished part 3 and might make a start on part 4 in bed...

Blake's 7 - Restoration: Damage Control.
Compared to the earlier two series of Blake's 7 audios, I have to say I found both Crossfire and Restoration slightly underwhelming, I'm not sure why. Anyway, listening again, I'm enjoying Pal Darrow's last throw of the dice as Avon - this boxset was always going to be a bittersweet experience. It's great that we have so much BF Blake's 7, and kudos to them for getting the cast together all these times. Like all the best things, I'd love more - but with three main players gone, it's probably best to draw a line under the full-casts for now. Anyway, I'm really enjoying visiting this finale series!

Dust Breeding (Mike Tucker)
I love the setting and a lot of elements in this but I just think it never quite comes together as a story.

Project Twilight and Project Lazarus, for example, would be hugely different if they were produced now.

They’re more mainstream then they were before what with them having access to revived series material but that does mean that Auntie Beeb now probably have tighter restrictions for Big Finish when it comes to some of their stories. I believe The War Doctor series was a prime example of that. One does wonder whether such classics as The Holy Terror would even be commissioned now.

You know, I was going to use that very story as an example! I mean, BF still produce some mind-blowing stuff now, but you're right - it all has to go under the BBC radar to make sure it's all in-keeping with today's show's sensitivities. Possibly - possibly - the recent Lovecraft Invasion story was an example of that. I'd love, for example, for Tom Baker to record a lovely, horrific Hinchcliffe-ian style tale, or for Colin's Doctor to be embroiled in a gung-ho, high body-count Series 22 type of audio! But I don't think it'll happen.

MR 101 Absolution
I thought this was supposed to be a bit of a stinker?! On first listen (continuing to fill my unheard MR gaps in order), I was pleasantly surprised to think it otherwise.
Dark, forboding and altogether not an encouraging story if you've had a bad day, but I thought it was a good story. Poor old C'rizz, he didn't have much luck in his life did he? India Fisher at the end - wow what a performance, up there with those famous scenes in 'Neverland'. Cheery Charley could really dig deep when needed.
(I know I've heard 102 'The Mind's Eye' because I did all the Erimem stories on our listen-through, but I can't remember a thing about it. The story that never was. )

MR 103 The Girl Who Never Was
All-action, fast-paced end to the first half of Charley's arc. Very timey-wimey and of course with the cyber-guest monsters, but it's the Paul McGann/India Fisher character drama and of course Anna Massey that really made this one stand out for me. One last hoorah for the team, and entertaining listening, but it's the end of their arc that really matters.
Goodbye Charley to your first Doctor, it's been a great journey from the R101 - and oh, who's this...? I'm very pleased I've taken all these stories in order, and have the Sixie/Charley arc to follow, all as yet unheard.
It's been a treat to follow them from story to story at my own pace, 13 years since I first heard 'Storm Warning' on BBCR4x and (rolls eyes) totally failed to realise that it and 'Chimes' were just the surface of a vast, glorious audio goldmine I could have delved into! It must have been even better for everyone who followed their journeys in real time, month by month, release by release without knowing where or when or even if arcs would end.
Whatever delights await us in the new age of boxsets - Flip and Constance's arcs are still in play, excellent - the long arcs travelled through the MR by Evelyn, Erimem, Charley and Hex are a triumph for BF and a legacy to be proud of.

In town today I finished off 'The Eye Of The Scorpion' for the first time in quite a few years, which I very much enjoyed, and listened to most of 'The Axis Of Insanity' (parts 1-3 in full, five-odd minutes of 4). I can't 100% swear that I've heard 'Axis' before, but the beginning did seem familiar. Whilst I'm not going to say that it's the greatest story in the world, I'm not disliking it as much as I thought I would... (It's fine enough, I doubt I'll be listening to it again any time soon, but it's... Fine enough?).

The Scorched Earth.
Listening to this not long after I first heard it, and enjoying it just as much if not more! I'm not going to rattle on again how much I'll miss the monthly range, but this is a perfectly paced, intelligent, well played and produced story with a fascinating villain and some cracking dialogue for the Doctor and Constance. One of the latter day monthly range gems, I think.
