I think it's all a fun bit of tease, personally and Doctor Who needs that push after last year. 100%. We've had Clara for 4 years, so this isn't a regular event to have a new companion. It's great that its getting a bit of attention from the Beeb and hopefully that'll continue when the show comes back. I don't understand the moaning - if you'd rather just find it out out in a news story then just wait - it will be one as soon as the announcement is made. The rest of us can just enjoy the pageantry. It's the mockery this will probably provoke that is making me post like this. I really hope I'm wrong and in 24 hours will be on here posting "wow" but I think the guys down the pub will be going "what the f*** was that stupid Doctor Who s***e in the half time break?" I really hope I'm wrong.

Why can't they just tell us her name? Or hold a press conference? Sometimes the BBC these days makes the mistake of acting as though Doctor Who is a huge deal and expects everyone else to feel the same. Promoting the show is fine, but you have to earn the public's respect, not grandstand in front of them how much better than every other show you think Doctor Who is. And that's how this will come across, it's just arrogant to think that any of the audience at that time will be at all interested. That said, I'm really hoping the announcement is something amazing that justifies the decision. I'm still feeling humiliated by the fiasco that was Doctor Who Live though so I don't hold out much hope. It'll probably just be Gary Linekar interviewing Peter Capaldi for a couple of minutes followed by him announcing the name of the new companion. Well she's going to be there, in person or pre-record! They're not just going to have someone else say her name.

The more people know that the companion's announcement is on Saturday, the more that tune in to watch the football game. The more that see the announcement, the more that get excited for her. The more that get excited about her, the more that watch Doctor Who when she's in it. It's the same reason Big Finish does countdowns to special releases.

It's not being massively hyped though, is it? They've just said where they're releasing it. It's not even on a par with BF's countdown posters and the like.
It's so odd to me that people can't see why they do it like this. They want to get their news story to the maximum number of people - so they tell that potential audience exactly where and when to be there to see the news story revealed. Especially with the series losing a big chunk of viewers last year, they're going to have to take each and every step to arrest that slide and hopefully reverse it.

I really hope I'm wrong. If they ay that, they're not the target audience anyway, so it scarcely matters. You can afford to alienate people who aren't ever going to watch. I've got plenty of friends and family who will think exactly that, but I also know many others who love the footie and Who, like me, and they'll be delighted. Also, let's remember this is a Man United game, despite their struggles the past 3 years they still have more young supporters - 100% Who demographics - who WILL be watching. There's no downside here.

I think for many, it will be enough and I don't see how it could be disapointing, really. For the majority of viewers, it's the first glimmer of Doctor Who before Christmas and it's fully fledged return in 2017, it's the beginning of The Doctor's life post-Clara and River and The Doctor's new friend. We might get a few more extended details then usual given the gap year, but I'd imagine the BBC will be keeping the new companion a mystery for now. The merits of the new companion will be proven in 2017.

They're not just going to have someone else say her name. Probably in-person after Peter Capaldi inevitably says her name.

Trying to be more positive today after yesterday's teaser trailer, which did get me quite excited.
My ideal would be for a quick in-character scene of the two, like a minisode, with a caption at the end "introducing...."
it is cruel though to be getting trailers eight months away from the next new episode! How much are you going to tease us this year, BBC?

Is it definitely a girl?
Frank Skinner was mentioned as a potential on his Absolute Radio show this morning in his absence.

It'll 99% be another 20 something female companion who's life is going nowhere then the Doctor turns up & whisks her away to show her the universe.
My take would be the companion would be a immoral character who the Doctor takes under his wing & shows him/her the universe & slowly over the series we see this person gradually have a change of heart.

While it's a good idea, I don't know if there is a lot of dramitic urgency in that. It'd be good idea for Big Finish or Titan to tackle, though. The Doctor is effectivily a super hero, the companion needs to be more mortal-bound for to keep the tension.

I'm guessing it'll be Pearl Mackie and she'll be announced in the form of a specially shot teaser trailer featuring them running away from something and welcoming the audience into the TARDIS. If it is Pearl Mackie, the idea to announce it in front of such a big audience is odd though because the only reaction they're going to get is 'Who?!?', whereas if it were a name actor it would have a bigger impact.

We've just done "Am I A Good Man?" - would be a bit soon for "Am I A Good Woman?"

Well, I'm interested in finding out who the new companion is but not enough to watch a football match or try to work out when half-time is . Anyway, it'll be all over our forum 5 minutes after the announcement lol. Cheers Tony

I don't think they'd live broadcast a reveal for a virtual unknown to the public performer cause otherwise the immediate media coverage will be who's that and what was point of a live TV reveal.
