The BBC have only harmed this show with that reveal. If they were going to announce the new companion in front of such a large audience, they should have cast a name actor. Now people are just going to be wondering who on Earth the new companion is rather than actually looking forward to the series. Maybe that's the point? Cast a teenage(?) working class newbie for viewers to go on a journey with? And that is very much a time honored tradition for Who, especially since the show made its return. The companion stands in, and represents the audience.

A big atudio presentation would have been harming I think, which is why I was worried, but I was very pleased with what we got. People who aren't fans would just have seen it as a clip of Doctor Who with a new companion in. It was more about introducing what the character of the companion was like than trying to impress people with who the actress was.

What a let down. Such an opportunity lost! I'll wait till I actually see her in the show before judging. she seemed a bit annoying, but overall it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it might have been.

It's builds hype and/or anger and annoyance in the fanbase, anything that keeps people talking is good. The news would leak out soon anyway, and showing her in the midst of a football match might grab at least a few new viewers.

Hard to get a sense of Bill just from the clip. I'll hold off on judging until I see some episodes. She does seem pretty Donna Noble in the clip, though.

oh dear! worst fears confirmed an annoying streetwise teenager complete with embarrassing questions.
Mr Moffat and the BBC what are you thinking. I am betting she makes her 1st appearance in Class!
now I have my least favourite doctor with my least favourite type of companion to contend with, the stories better be top notch this season to keep me watching.
This has just made my bad week even worse!

I'd have preferred it if they had tried something more adventurous. The clip makes her seem too much like every NuWho companion who came before her. Still, there's only so much you can tell from two minutes of dialogue. I think viewers should give Pearl Mackie the benefit of the doubt until her first few episodes have aired.
I wonder if Bill will be a one series companion or if she'll stay for the start of the Chris Chibnall era.

This has just made my bad week even worse! My main concern was the misjudgement of deciding to spend most of the only two minutes of DW we're likely to get before Christmas undermining the menace of the main enemies, again. Oh well, it will be forgotten by the time the show comes back, but I'm not sure it bodes well for the tone of series 10.

What's the point in introducing her now just to send her off at the end of the series? With Donna there were specials between series 4 and series 5.

Donna was only in two episodes of those specials and didn't have a huge number of scenes in them, so it wouldn't be that different. But then again, filming a series means spending the better part of a year filming so I suppose it's not always a creative decision.
Two seasons seems to me like the ideal amount of time for a companion to stay. Obviously it depends on my feelings on that particular companion though.

I'm hoping for a completely new start for Chibnall, with no holdovers at all from the (dreadful) Moffat era.

I'm hoping for a completely new start for Chibnall, with no holdovers at all from the (dreadful) Moffat era. This is unlikely, given that a) Moffat has said that having to start completely fresh was a strenuous experience that he has no desire to inflict on his successor and b) Chibnall has asked Capaldi to stay for Series 11, suggesting that he feels the same way.

What they say and what they do are often very different things.

This is the only forum I frequent regarding Doctor Who, because it is free of the relentless mass negativity elsewhere. I love the show with a passion, in all its incarnations. But I have to be honest - the clip did nothing to inspire a great deal of confidence. After all the work that went in to making the Daleks scary again back in 2005, here they are presented as something for the new companion to laugh at. I don't like that at all. It's too early to judge Pearl's acting from that clip, but she seems to be spouting the same sardonic comedy lines that were given to Amy and Clara. (Pouts. Eyebrow raised. "Why do they say exterminate? Why can't they just say kill, it'd be quicker?"). I wish her well and I hope I'll like her. But her promise to bring a bit of 'attitude' into the Tardis doesn't inspire confidence, and I'm sorry to say that.

"Why do they say exterminate? Why can't they just say kill, it'd be quicker?") I think it's a defense mechanism for Bill. She's clearly afraid that entire scene and instead of dread silence she's trying to inject something so she feels safer around the Daleks. It's a perfectly human thing. Amy and Clara were overwhelmingly brave when they said those type of lines. Pearl's entire performance here suggests a young woman scared out of her wits with someone she doesn't know well enough to fully trust.
