Least a talking cabbage would be different, well done Moffat you deliver yet another 20 something female cockney companion this time she's named Bill, "Bill"(wtf?) She is basically a cross between Rose Tyler & Martha Jones with a sprinkle of Donna Noble. I'm giving up on the new series till it changes hands & stick to my Big Finish Doctor Who audio for my fix. I find it very doubtful myself Chibnall will stray that far from the template. He'll probably keep Bill on as the Doctor's companion for a series.

Wouldn't surprise me, he's had much less time to prepare for his first series than Moffat did...though I'd rather keep Capaldi for a year if it was choice between old companion or new doctor...

Not necessarily, it depends how much prep he's done in advance for Broadchurch 3, and so how much time he has to start advance planning for Doctor Who now.

Don't get me wrong I'm not judging Pearl yet (in fact I already have a very good feeling about Bill), I just think Chibnall should create at least one new character of his own for Series 11...maybe both could stay and a male secondary companion could join them...

He can do that with recurring characters.

I'm liking what I see of Pearl so far.

Even if season 11 has the same cast as season 10, Chibnall will have a chance to create his own characters in season 12 or 13. Or even reinvent preexisting ones. Don't forget, character development isn't exclusively off the cards yet. Bill as we see her now may not be the same woman by the time of Seasons 12 or 13. Personally, I'm just hoping for some deadly Daleks again. I just saw a rerun of The Stolen Earth and realised how much I miss Daleks that are allowed to kill people in droves. Nobody mocks them. When Jack and Sarah hear their war cry of "EXTERMINATE", they break down in tears, convinced that they and everyone they love is going to die. I even went back to The Mutant Phase to remind myself about how ruthless and crazed these monsters are, how quick they are to kill. That is what I want to see under Chibnall.

I have to admit I found that Jack and Sarah stuff in The Stolen Earth quite cringy and over-wrought.

Oh, I love it. It's brave and ordinary people fighting against unconquerable odds with the Daleks doing what they do best -- kill. It's self-indulgent sure, but it doesn't stop it from being incredibly fun. I absolutely adore stories with an edge of desperation to them and it's the ultimate "base under siege" story with the Earth itself at stake. The plot is clever without feeling the need to boast about it, the character work is perfect managing to mesh the various spin-off shows styles together into a cohesive whole, Graeme Harper delivers his usual excellence with merciless Daleks gunning down unarmed civilians, and the actors are on top form with even the supporting cast like the German caretaker delivering terrific performances. I really miss this. I miss Martha getting a gun pointed in her face because the woman in charge of guarding the station knows what she's going to do, I miss Jack's anguish as she's seemingly scattered into the atmosphere, I miss UNIT as a competent fighting force who fight even when they know they'll die, I miss the energy behind the Doctor piecing together the world engine from all the planetary disappearances, I miss Sarah Jane panicking and apologising when she drives into a Dalek patrol, I miss the quiet character moment of Donna believing that she's not worth caring about despite her bravado, I really do miss all of it.
It's just as good as I remember it being as a kid and that's positively mindblowing. Wondrous even.

Sure, its another female companion, but i like that she's different from Mary Sue...i mean Clara. And i do hope that she is possibly from the 80's rather than ironically wearing the style of the era

Oh, that's fair. Personally, I'd probably be reacting in the same way myself if I was in their shoes. Sure, its another female companion, but i like that she's different from Mary Sue...i mean Clara. And i do hope that she is possibly from the 80's rather than ironically wearing the style of the era I do rather love that idea. A period specific companion from the 1980s would be rather cool with the ecological bandwagon and anxieties about an impending nuclear war at its height. The latter would be particularly pertinent given how the Daleks themselves were created.

I didn't find Jack's and Sarah's responses to the Daleks at all unrealistic.

I prefer a female companion, (for The Doctor!) and nobody can really judge 'Bill' until we get to see her in a proper episode, so it's a case of let's wait and see...

I prefer a female companion, (for The Doctor!) and nobody can really judge 'Bill' until we get to see her in a proper episode, so it's a case of let's wait and see... This is 99% my feeling too but there is that 1% that says if Cardiff want people to judge, they shouldn't have given us a dramatic scene with her in-character. They KNOW every bit of dramatised-Who will be scrutinised and torn apart especially this year with the drought of new footage so I don't think people are being unreasonable to have an opinion formed. I think there is a mis-conception that this is a scene from an episode when it's really just some fluff to say "here she is, here's a tiny bit of what she might be like". Yes, she spoke a lot and crammed a lot of questions in but they had a tiny amount of time during the footy - there wasn't going to be a well-rouned character intro. We''ll get that next Spring, I'm sure. I quite like the idea - we've had various types of reveal from live show to pre-recorded to press release so this was a bit different and hey! There's an extra couple of minutes of Capaldi-era Who that we wouldn't have otherwise. No downside. My sincere hope is that the usual "Well, I'm not watching again" brigade all over the net actually mean it this time instead of raining on everyone elses parade. If it's not what you want from Who - terrific, there's 53 years of tv, novels and audios to choose from without watching just to hate.

Hello again. How can you judge an actress based on two minutes of screen time? Reading the Radio Times site, who gave the game away before Saturday's reveal; she has a variety of experience behind her.
They too have picked up the possible 80's link. It would be intriguing, but would a companion from the recent past be hard to make distinctive? She would soon become indistinguishable from a modern day companion.
As for the name, Bill - Belinda, like the lead in 2.4 Children perhaps? Onwards to Season 10, time will tell, it usually does...

I don't buy that she's from the 80s. She dresses vintage as do a lot of 20-something ladies I know.
