Surprised no one brought up Billie Piper [...] What she say about BF? I'd hope she'd say yes, in her own unique style... Why you want to do some Big Finish? Because we want to, because we want to.

Me too! If BF could get Christopher Eccleston on board for a non-Doctor Who story first, great. He might enjoy the lunches and stick around then... who knows after that?
And even if not doing DW, just working for them is a good thing.
Josette Simon was lovely at an event recently and spoke of liking working for Big Finish (having done one DW with Paul and another with Tom) but made it clear that while she loved Blakes 7 and was proud of her time on it she simply didn't return to jobs in such a way and so would gladly do more work with BF but wouldn't consider playing Dayna again. (Later in the conversation she did add a 'ok lets never say never' not because she'd any intention of changing her mind but because she didn't like the idea of making a flat definitive statement).
I get the impression most of the other doctors took the role because they wanted to play the Doctor specifically as already existing fans, for Eccleston it may have been more of case of challenging himself as an actor and changing the public perception of his career, he may simply feel he achieved everything he wanted to do with the character, and there's nothing wrong with that. Let's not forget that McGann and Hurt only made a sole appearance each before they joined BF, Colin was fired from the role before he could finish what he wanted to do with the character and he, Davison and Mcoy all had to work with some very divisive scripts and budgetary issues so most of the BF Doctors still had lots they wanted or could do to explore the character further, the 9th Doctor's sole series had a very concise but clear character arc.

Surprised no one brought up Billie Piper... BBC have made clear he had her exclusively as his first companion... Have they? In 2005 DWM were approached with the opportunity to show the Doctor's eighth regeneration in their comics. This got as far as planning the story however fell through when the BBC told themthey couldn't have the ninth Doctor with Destrii (the eighth Doctor's then comic companion) as Rose was to be his first companion. Thus it fell through as DWM didn't think it would work without being able to show Destrii's reaction. That was was back in 2005 though, they might be persuaded nowadays.

Eccleston was such a fantastic Doctor of course I'm hoping he'll change his mind and come back do some audio adventures eventually...on the other hand I wouldn't want Eccleston to do anything he was less than 100% invested in, and the 9th Doctor has such a tight character arc that creating new companions, story arcs and more in the audios could ultimately undermine the redemption of the 9th Doctor as seen on TV. If he does the audios it will be fantastic (get it? ) news, if he doesn't it will still be great news...for my bank account Either way I'm frankly a little uneasy about the implied sense of entitlement some fans have when it comes to Eccleston's Doctor, people seem to focus on resenting him for not giving us more, when I respect him for already giving so much as the character. Mostly agreed except hopefully expanding the Ninth Doctor mythos wouldn't be any more detrimental than the wonderful enrichment the other Doctors have received through audio. Also, perhaps we've been a tad spoiled having been blessed with 10th Doctor and War Doctor audios and that does tend to make it seem all the more natural there should be Ninth Doctor audios, but I think perhaps maybe some of us tend to resent anything we think might be getting in the way of Chris returning to the role rather than resenting the actor or his decisions themselves, and are still a little perplexed what it might be that would stand in the way. For all I actually know it could indeed be something as simple as an ample amount of other commitments, more than Eccleston's sentiments about the Doctor Who role, that accounts for his not returning to it. He has seeming expressed some at least partly reassuring enthusiasm about his involvement with the series which hopefully can be taken to mean he isn't completely adverse to further involvement, and some sentiments that make one hope that future experience with Big Finish might be an attractive upgrade to his experience with the TV series. As far as I'm concerned I think his Doctor is a magnificent achievement just because he made the character work so well even amid some incredibly lofty expectations and sort of having to make up 15 Doctorless years to I presume many older viewers, and I hope Chris would find it uniquely rewarding to reprise the role both because it is a high mark and a unique and interesting role, I think I'd be puzzled if he didn't. While I'd be delighted for his delightful Doctor to not be all a thing of the past, though, I certainly wouldn't want anyone to feel pressured into any role, and he certainly doesn't need to do more than he already has to have a remarkable DW legacy. If and when it all works out... (but yes, if the truth be told, I'm somewhat steamed at his agent for giving him other things to do because he makes such a great Doctor). :-)

It was RTD & co. In other words folks who don't really have a say anymore. I like the idea that Rose was not the Ninth Doctor's first companion but that must mean he's forgotten something by the time The Beast of Babylon comes around.

When is the timing right though? This year it's 12 years since he last played the Doctor. If I was Christopher Eccleston, I'd be knocking Nicholas Briggs' door down to return to the role on audio. Hell, after 12 years I'd be practically begging to return to such a popular role - especially when as Eccleston I'd be aware I'm not doing as well as David Tennant, Matt Smith or Sylvester McCoy in terms of a acting career. Why would he be begging? His career's doing fine. He's currently a regular on a HBO series and was a lead in a successful BBC drama last year which has been renewed for this year. If you compare him to other Doctor Who actors: - He doesn't have a regular recurring role in a TV or film comic property like Arthur Darvill (DC's Legends of Tomorrow) or Karen Gillan (Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy). Thor: The Dark World was a one-off appearance. - He hasn't had a high-profile U.S. career like David Tennant or Karen Gillan. I don't know what the HBO series he's in but I can guarantee it won't be anything as big as Jessica Jones or Selfie. - He hasn't been in any high-profile animated feature films like David Tennant (Pirates!, How To Train Your Dragon). - He hasn't been cast in something that was intended to be an important character in a big franchise like Matt Smith with the Terminator series (Terminator Genisys may have been a flop but given that he was cast with the intention that his character would prove a vital plot point in future films he was clearly seen as capable enough to hold two further films). - He hasn't had a presenting career, as with David Tennant. You see David Tennant on television all the time (it does help that he's the lead of the hugely successful Broadchurch, of course), whereas with Christopher Eccleston it's very rare you come across him in television or film. The A Word was the first time he'd been on TV in ages. I think Christopher Eccleston's idea that 'you only bathe in the same river twice' is holding him back - even Noel Clarke is returning to past properties and his Brotherhood film series has been huge on the British indie movie front. I'm pretty convinced if he reprised past roles we'd be seeing (and hearing) a lot more of him than we are currently doing. I'd hope they wouldn't hype it up, because it would be so disappointing if they said 'We've got a Doctor onboard for one of our upcoming releases' and it turned out Christopher Eccleston was in a HG Wells release and not a Doctor Who one. Not me. I'd be thrilled. Each to their own, but I think the majority of the fanbase would be disappointed if it were hyped up.

They should ask him again and bring up what he said about wanting to return to Doctor Who in an interview. Back him into a corner! Because backing people into corners and forcing them to give you an answer is always the best way to create a good working relationship. Indeed. Knowing myself, if I was him and someone tried to do that, I'd simply get angry and probably - even if childishly - be pushed further away from the idea. I don't mind someone trying to convince me with reasoning, but I actively resist anything that smells like pressure, be it peer or otherwise in nature... I know when someone is trying to back me into a corner, and in that circumstance I side with the "fight" instinct rather than the "flight" one. Also: "I do what I want!" - Cartman

Maybe, just maybe, he has the career he wants. Different people want different things. Why is that so difficult for you to accept?

In all likelihood, this is basically the same deal as Tom. Don't be shocked if it's until another decade or two before Eccleston decides to fully dive in. He has the full right to take his career in any direction he pleases. Big Finish isn't going anywhere anytime soon, so that door will remain open.
Besides, we don't even know about Ten vol.2 either, now that David's going to be swimming in a moneybin and fighting the Beagle Boys over at Disney.

As an aside, for novelty value, I'd laugh if Chris gets cast as Flintheart Glomgold or another bad guy on the new Ducktales.

I don't think anybody will be shocked if it is, just very disappointed and let-down again by Christopher Eccleston's refusal to return. I have nothing against the guy, I just wish he was more like David Tennant and Matt Smith in that they act as ambassadors towards the show whilst Mr Eccleston either acts like he'd rather not be associated with it or talks about how he wished he stayed longer but never actually acts on that impulse. There's obviously going to be a 10DA Volume 2. I wish they'd just hurry up and announce it. Seriously, Big Finish: we all know it'll be in the pipeline so put us out of our misery and allow us to pre-order it!

It's his choice. There is no obligation for him to do it at all. If he wants to do it he can, if not then it won't happen. As as for his career, he seems perfectly happy with it. Not all actors want heavy recurring work, he seems to pick and chose projects that interest him. And he's still prominent in the public eye, take his work for Alzheimer's campaigns.

Seriously, Big Finish: we all know it'll be in the pipeline so put us out of our misery and allow us to pre-order it! Scheduling could be a major issue. It took ages for Big Finish to get David and Catherine for the same three days. They both have active careers compared to the other Doctor and companion actors. It seems to be more a case of when, rather than if. I don't know about you, but if I pre-order something I'd rather have a release date nailed down first.
