There's obviously going to be a 10DA Volume 2. I wish they'd just hurry up and announce it. Seriously, Big Finish: we all know it'll be in the pipeline so put us out of our misery and allow us to pre-order it! Scheduling could be a major issue. It took ages for Big Finish to get David and Catherine for the same three days. They both have active careers compared to the other Doctor and companion actors. It seems to be more a case of when, rather than if. I don't know about you, but if I pre-order something I'd rather have a release date nailed down first. They don't have to get Catherine Tate each time though, and David Tennant is a Whovian so would most likely do whatever he can to make the scheduling work - even if it means not having a day off at any point in the year.

It's his choice. There is no obligation for him to do it at all. If he wants to do it he can, if not then it won't happen. As as for his career, he seems perfectly happy with it. Not all actors want heavy recurring work, he seems to pick and chose projects that interest him. And he's still prominent in the public eye, take his work for Alzheimer's campaigns. Whilst his work for Alzheimer's is inspirational and he has no obligation to act like an ambassador for the show, it's still frustrating that he doesn't do more for us fans. It's entirely his choice what he does and doesn't do. While it would be fantastic for Chris Eccleston to record new stories with Big Finish it's not the end of the world if he chooses not to. While he did play a very popular role twelve years ago, he doesn't owe the fans what they think he owes them. I feel it'd be a far better experience for everyone involved if he did work with Big Finish because he wanted to, not out of any sense of entitlement fans may have. It's not like the fate of Big Finish begins and ends with whether he works with them. Anyway, we still have many wonderful characters to tell lots of amazing stories with. We're spoiled for choice!

At the end of the day, someone could agree to be the next Doctor after Capaldi and make it clear from outset that it's just a TV role for them and they've no interest in conventions, audios, etc, ONLY in doing the acting job. That wouldn't make them the wrong person for the part.

Even though he's averse to roles like the Doctor, no one really saw coming the explosion in popularity Doctor Who got from Chris Eccleston's run on the show.

It took Pat Troughton years before he went to conventions. How long did it take Tom Baker to return to Who (in any form)? It's not cast in stone that an actor has to reprise a role "ever" or that they "owe the fans anything". I was gutted Tom didn't do The Five Doctors, but now here he is doing BF. Never say "never", but at the end of the day it's "their" choice not "ours" and we should respect that.
Cheers
Tony

There seems to be an attitude of "entitlement," coming from a person or two in this thread... the idea that actors owe the fans anything other than gratitude for supporting their work is one of the things that gives fandom a bad name in the "real world." Eccleston may regret leaving Doctor Who when he did, may even consider it tragic, but he's moved on, and is unlikely to come back. Certainly not impossible, but extremely unlikely. In reference to returning as the Doctor, I remember him saying in an interview that he doesn't like to "swim in the same river twice." He could change his mind someday, but the notion not coming back is being somehow disloyal to the fans or that he's being a hypocrite is absolute and unmitigated hogwash. He doesn't owe us anything. He's always kind and open to Doctor Who fans who he meets on the street or in random places, he appreciates them -- have you seen the video of him helping a random guy propose at a restaurant? -- but he doesn't owe us anything. Same goes for Tennant, Smith, or anyone else involved with the show...or any other form of entertainment, in any media, ever in the history of the universe.

Cheers Tony Let us also bear something in mind: dalek openly admits he has autism, which, if you know anything about the condition, can cause repetitive and stubborn behaviours (repeated insisting of Chris in this case). I'm sure dalek's not trying to upset anyone (his tag even states this) and I'd be wary of getting too sharp in responses to him.

It's not obvious at all and Nick's most recent comments suggest it is proving difficult, yet somehow neither Tennant nor Smith get the same resentment as Eccleston seems to be receiving.
Actually I think our best chance of a further release with Ten is for him to guest on one disc of a four-disc Jenny release.

I must admit to being surprised that DTs last job of 2016 was Ducktales VO work, the amount of BF he could've done in that time, however I suspect Disney paid at least double what BF can. EDIT
(Actully apart from Broadchurch an RD King biopic and a short film by GM all his work in 2016 was VO

Still there's a small chance I suppose he might record some BF in his off days from the theatre production of Don Juan in the West End during the spring.

It should probably be remembered how demanding stage work can be. In David Tennant's case he also has a young family, and he'll have promotional duties for Broadchurch from next month. Last year he was playing Richard II both in London and America, so it probably accounts for his reduced work schedule. Catherine Tate was touring her live show through the end of last year, so that would probably have kept her from recording.

David Tennant is a fan of Doctor Who so his future involvement is more a labour of love, it was just a acting job to Chris but he should've known taking on a high profile role gains attention.
Not a big Ninth Doctor fan so his current non involvement don't bother me.

Don't be shocked if it's until another decade or two before Eccleston decides to fully dive in. He has the full right to take his career in any direction he pleases. Big Finish isn't going anywhere anytime soon, so that door will remain open. I don't think anybody will be shocked if it is, just very disappointed and let-down again by Christopher Eccleston's refusal to return. I have nothing against the guy, I just wish he was more like David Tennant and Matt Smith in that they act as ambassadors towards the show whilst Mr Eccleston either acts like he'd rather not be associated with it or talks about how he wished he stayed longer but never actually acts on that impulse. There's obviously going to be a 10DA Volume 2. I wish they'd just hurry up and announce it. Seriously, Big Finish: we all know it'll be in the pipeline so put us out of our misery and allow us to pre-order it! I agree my friend, you take on the role of the Doctor expect to be forever associated with it. I love David Tennants era, he's one of us, a fan & while i didn't warm to Matt Smith i appreciate what he's done to promote the show.

I don't mean any harm towards Christopher Eccleston with my words but I just don't think he always makes the most wise decisions. He seems like the kind of person who acts first, thinks later and maybe should have given more thought to how much playing the part of the Doctor would change his lift. I'd like to see Christopher Eccleston appear more on TV because he is a good actor, but unfortunately I think his 'don't bathe in the same river twice' motto has put some TV/film companies put off hiring him for major releases. I get where he's coming from but I don't agree with it - certainly in this age of shared universes it isn't the most sensible approach. I think Christopher Eccleston should do one initial Big Finish release as the Ninth Doctor and see what it's like compared to his negative experience on the Doctor Who set. After all, what harm could one release do?

It seems more like trying to keep a volume two secret by creating a sense of unsurety. I'd rather they just announced it, even if it were like Classic Doctors, New Monsters Volume 2 where no release date is given. David Tennant and Matt Smith don't get the same resentment from people because they openly accept their roles as incarnations of the Doctor rather than trying not to talk about it. I think a lot of us would be less resenting towards Christopher Eccleston if he didn't give off the impression that he associates his incarnation of the Doctor with his negative experiences on-set. Most of the time when Doctor Who is mentioned to him in interviews he brings up his on-set problems, when it would be nicer to see him speak more positively about playing the character (because there must have been some positivity).

That wouldn't make them the wrong person for the part. I actually disagree. Doctor Who is definitely bigger than a TV show - and the person playing the Doctor should be at least open to that. They're not obliged to do so - and if, like Chris, they've been left with a sour taste in their mouth, I understand that completely - but treating the part of the Doctor as "just a job" up-front just seems wrong. Everyone who's stepped into the role so far - even Eccleston - has understood the weight of it. And I wager if Eccleston had been around for three years and had a good time with the DW team, he'd already have done a Big Finish or two. Alas, as ever, all I can do when this topic comes up is say: I respect Chris Eccleston as an actor and a person - he seems a really genuinely decent, professional guy. And I hope one day he considers Doctor Who again, because the universe is poorer without him.
