YESSSSSSSSSS. I've been wanting these Cybermen back ever since I first saw a clip of the original Mondasian Cybermen in the Tenth Planet. I'm glad Capaldi got his wish! {Spoiler} I just hope the rumours about them doing a Cybermen origin story aren't true, just because I don't want it to clash with Spare Parts. With 11 rebooting everything it could clash and STILL be fine. Or the fifth Doctor could be elsewhere on Mondas during the same time period having his own adventure.

I hope they don't go down the origin route and just do a damn good Cyberman story. Save for Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel (which really left an impression on me as a child) Cybermen stories in the new series have been a bit meh really. They've captured the old design really well (those blank eyes), and I hope they utilise the creepy voices too.

Hopefully they avoid origin, OR, leave enough space around it so both stories work, in that I could imagine Ten glancing around so as to avoid Seven when he was in Pompeii.

Really hope this is not any sort of Genesis of the Cybermen story and is just "The Tenth Planet 2" or somewhat. I hope they don't go down the origin route and just do a damn good Cyberman story. Hopefully they avoid origin, OR, leave enough space around it so both stories work, in that I could imagine Ten glancing around so as to avoid Seven when he was in Pompeii. Problem with that is that Pompeii is described similarly in both stories, whereas Mondas might be drastically different between two origin stories. ALTHOUGH: another idea might be that the original technology recreates the Cybermen in the original form.

ALTHOUGH: another idea might be that the original technology recreates the Cybermen in the original form. Like a cyber-conversion unit left over from the Mondasian expeditionary forces that left and eventually became the Faction or surviving forces who were caught midway between Earth and Mondas when the planet disintegrated. Certainly beats some of the redesigns we've had recently. The titular villains from Victory of the Daleks looked almost as if they were made for merchandising and the Cybermen from Nightmare in Silver managed to be pretty underwhelming Iron Man suits as well. Seriously, where did the creative spark for these monsters go? How'd we go from invisible Cybermen using recently killed MI6 agents as puppets for phone conversations in The Flood to them literally stomping around in a graveyard as find-and-replace tin soldiers for Death in Heaven? Whatever happened to ideas like this?

I was sitting in a coffee shop when I encountered the promo shot and let out a little squeal. And I thought they looked great.

It's his last series as Doctor, he probably demanded it. Yeah, I'm sure he held the BBC to ransom over it. Had they insisted on new series Cybermen, he'd probably have quit on the spot He did quit.

This is great news. I can honestly say I'm more excited about this than I probably should be! And yet I remember the originals as ghostly, weird, clanking things - and extremely frightening (which is bizarre, because all they did in their original episode was threaten to interview everyone to death). Terrific news. I'm sure this will be a bitter/sweet story for Peter C. For me, the originals are the creepiest by far; they look horrible (and I mean that positively.) And those voices... Who wouldn't try to run from the South Pole all the way to the North when one of those grotesque half-dead things promised: 'yOU will BEcome LIke US...' ? (New series Cybermen have to do all that over-the-top flying because any life-form with ears could hear them coming on foot from half a world away... Cybermen should be stealthy and sinister, not clumping and clanking!)

No you are not. If I were to compose a Cyber-list, they would probably be second. I think the new Cybermen were excellent in the Capaldi two-parter a couple of years ago, absolutely brilliant. They were the RTD Cybermen, but tweaked and improved, and they did away with the 'uniformn marching' thing, which I think reduced them. I also loved the way they stood in silence, without moving, like statues awaiting orders (or whatever). They are a million miles away from the ramshackle, cloth-faced demons from 'The Tenth Planet' - but both versions are very effective, I think.

They are a million miles away from the ramshackle, cloth-faced demons from 'The Tenth Planet' - but both versions are very effective, I think. Each design serves their own purpose I think. The original CyberMondasians are a reminder of what it means to lose your soul to desperation and the surgeon's scalpel, the CyberNeomorphs existing as the summit of lofty inexorability and ruthless wisdom, the CyberTelosians fittingly like mummified remains wrapped in plastic and metal, the CyberNomads a reminder of how strong their grip is on survival... I wasn't a fan of the stomping Cybermen from the parallel universe either, but the breed from Nightmare in Silver feel as though they have the same weakness of the battalion from Silver Nemesis, there's no sense that these are Nietzschean supermen. They have the fragility of Borg drones.

Well they could easily do an origin type but set it after Spare Parts

I don't mind the design of the Gaiman Cybermen, its alright. My issue is with how gimmickly they were used. If you want scary Cybermen have them do something scary, gimmicks like being able to run and being able to turn their head all the way round isn't. I've no problem with them flying though, that seems like a logical thing for the Cybermen to add whereas running and 360 head turn doesn't.

I'm pretty excited to see this design of the Cybermen return, but I'm very concerned we'll end up with an Asylum of the Daleks situation where they're not part of the plot and are just there for kicks. I don't think I'll get worked up about it until I actually see the episode, but I'm a little bit weary nonetheless...

This isn't a spoiler. It's an official teaser by the BBC for the 10th series. If it spoils something for a viewer then that's their problem, but it's no more a spoiler than a trailer is. No, it's a spoiler because it tells me something about the series that I might not have wanted to know. Fair enough it's a BBC news release but some people are trying to avoid hearing in advance about what's in the series by not having BBC on their Facebook feed etc. Spoiler notices in the thread header and use of spoiler tags are a common courtesy that would have been appreciated.

Mmm, that and the Cyber-Planner's Mr. Clever feels so very much like the Mara by another name. I think I'd have a far higher opinion of them if their debut had gone down a great deal better. Still, if you want a really cool flying Cyberman, look no further than a brief clip in Paul Johnson's Doctor Who anime teaser. (Jetpacks, every Cyberleader should have one.)
