Or do you think I need a not we perspective? That would be cool. I just thought it would be a good suggestion to have fans and not wes give their opinions on your podcast. Up to you but I think it would be interesting to hear.

Having seen this episode at last (work commitments denied me the correct ambience in which to watch it previously), I'm glad to say I really enjoyed it. Considering we're only two episodes in to the new series, there's a genuine gusto about these latest stories. We are given no reason not to enjoy them - no reason not to love Capaldi's Doctor, no annoying character traits getting in the way of our enjoyment of the companion, no unfathomable plot contrivences to get in the way of our enjoyment of the story (I say this as a fan of Steven Moffat). It's all good, brisk, life-affirming stuff - and isn't Peter C given a lot of running to do in this one?
This episode also contained the line "I'm happy, I hope you're happy too." The fact that it is a line from David Bowie's classic 'Ashes to Ashes' can't be a coincidence, I think, although maybe I'm seeing patterns in things that aren't there.
I got a real 'Silent Running' vibe watching the little robots tending to the garden as well. If these two things really are nods to other stuff, they are very satisfying ones.
And next week's story looks an absolute belter!

I argued that that was precisely it's strength, just exploring this colony and how it worked. It's when those five minutes came up that it had problems.

It's when those five minutes came up that it had problems. Your last point reminded me of an idea I had for a Doctor Who episode ages ago: What if you had a two hander very much like The Ark In Space Episode One (and now Smile), with seemingly no enemy...but then you reveal there IS an enemy and you've been watching them all along? The Doctor and companion have been using a human colony's only oxygen supply, using their food and water, and now they want them out.

Give me well developed characters saying interesting things and I will give almost anything a lot of leeway. So yeah, I really enjoyed "Smile."

Yes. But good characters need to live within a cohesive plot or they are just sitting in a coffee shop
