Because being in love with a human would be like being in love with plankton and he's just spent the last thousand years visiting her regularly in the vault? Plus it would explain why he's so desperate to redeem her. And she/he was the Doctor's first crush, we never quite get over them. We don't need a reason for why the Doctor would want to redeem Missy. He's always wanted the Master to be good, but he chose the dark path. The Master is his best friend. Also: the 'first man crush' line was a joke and not meant to be taken seriously. If I spent years with a murderous alien psychopath in a vault I wouldn't suddenly fall in love with said person. Missy and the Master having a romance makes so much more sense because the Master has always been shown to be a narcissist. I will not bite...I will not bite..I will... Stockholm Syndrome. Look it up. It's a real thing. And you may have wanted the line about a man crush to have been a joke but that's not how I heard it. The Doctor oozes poetry as he reminisces about how wonderful the Master was then. Dismissing it as a joke just makes the whole season's redemption of Missy arc meaningless.

Why does the Doctor have to fancy the Master for him to want his best friend to turn good?

The 'man crush' was definitely not a joke. It was also implied that it was long, long ago and probably at the academy, decades or even a century or two before they both left Gallifrey. Gents can and do develop 'man crushes' with the same sex without having homosexual thoughts or feelings or'fancy', it's another word for sheer and utter admiration of said person, sometimes with slight envy but without any of the ill feelings towards them.

Can confirm. It's, for want of a better phrase, a sense of brotherhood really. You can rely upon and respect this friend without devolving to the YA novella idea of fancying them. That's not why they're important. The Doctor and the Master have a friendship and I think why that's the case is because despite everything he has been through, the Doctor is still an idealist. He still tries because he believes he is ultimately responsible for his friend's downfall.

After all, different writers have different views on the dynamic.

I'm so glad this actually happened. Missy/the Master's romance, flirting with one another was brilliantly disturbing made all the more fantastic by how quickly they turn on each other at the first sight of betrayal (IE Missy deciding to stand with the Doctor and Simm 'killing' her).

I'm still going with one of them killing the other. Knowing Moff loves tying up loose ends, I can see Missy killing Simm so that she "creates" herself. Though Simm killing Missy would also be something I could see. Yay x 2

It was, as we speculated would be the limits on it, a quick flirt. Certainly not disturbing. It was like when you look at yourself naked in the mirror, suck in your middle-aged belly and think what a fine figure you still pose.

I totally found it disturbing, especially when they were dancing, or whenever Missy was inches away from Simm Masrer's face.

Wouldn't say it was a romance, just a few flirting lines. Did love the irony of the Masters both killing each other.
