Well,Corbyn & co have to go. I've said in the past that I thought he was necessary for Labour to pull away from the Red Tory of Blairism, but, and you can check, I've also said he's not the leader the Labour party needed NOW. I would have nominated Starmer in a second if that was possible.
As mentioned, the hope that Johnson's majority frees him from the swivel eyed lunacy of the DUP/ERG is what gives a tiny silver lining to this election for me.
Lidar, stay safe over there. And you're always welcome south of the border, unification or no unification.

Shall we start another thread for politics then? I fear there will be too much crossover. Anyway. I best stay away from these sort of topics given the fact this country is now under the boot of right wing bully boys. I hope others will help me to not offend anyone with my ignorant remarks by remembering that no offense whatsoever is intended here. I really have little understanding of UK politics in the first place in spite of the fact that England is "the old country" on my mother's side (and my mother-in-law's), except that it generally strikes me as being as insane as politics here in America, only more complicated. :-) It's ironically the things that are going on everywhere else that really do have me a bit worried that major countries are falling under the sway of pretentious thugs just when we need it least, and worse, I'm sure, in the event that any of them actually were the least of evils offered. Just between Trump and the things I'm hearing about Australia lately, I really am a little concerned that johnhurtdoctor may not be all that far from the mark. I hope that all can agree to disagree peaceably though, I'd hate to see fighting between people I've come to think of as familiar faces and even friends on DU. Congratulations and kudos to those who still see cause for optimism. It's nice to hear. Maybe I'd be more optimistic myself if I had any clue what I was talking about. :-) Best wishes to all of us and our posterity, wherever we may happen to be, and sincere condolences where due.

Went with Boris, it pains me vote conservative but being a long term labour supporter but i had no faith whatsoever in Corbyn who is in my opinion the worst labour leader ever, at least Boris is trying get us out of this mess.
It was voting for lesser of two evils & there was no way i was giving Corbyn my vote.
Political debates on any forum can get heated, there are no right or wrong answers, we each of us have our own opinion on this & can respect each other's opinion even if you disagree.

I'm sorry but there are right or wrong answers. We have had a Tory government for almost a decade. What have they done to improve the lives of the most vulnerable? Under their watch we have more food banks in this country than branches of McDonald's. Things are going to get worse for the disadvantaged, the elderly, the poor. & everyone who voted Tory is culpable in that. This is a very sad time for this country.

It's very easy to sit behind a keyboard and gloat, or try to bait someone with words or pictures intended to provoke, or post angrily when you've read something you've vehemently disagreed with. It's a damn sight harder to ignore the gloating, resist the baiting or push down the anger before posting. As a wise young woman once said not so long ago - we have more in common than that which divides us. Thanks for reminding me of that.

Like you, I went for what i saw as the lesser evil. Its been a difficult time for the country and hopefully we can move forwards. and also now we can say its Johnson and the Conservatives fault if it all goes tits up, rather than having to blame the whole government for Brick walling and backbiting

Hello again. Can I recommend the perfect tonic for all those political observers who like a bit of irreverence coupled with serious quesions and challenges to the status quo. At times it is completely daft but for those whom this result was depressing check out All4 and enjoy the incomparable Miriam Margolyes. You need a bit of silliness in between the serious debate. Best wishes from a completely blue Cornwall.
Sorry great piece of Muppetry there, the programme I am referrring to is of course, The Last Leg. Apologies to anyone who was scratching their heads...

So Boris's deal will pass and that's Brexit done with? Not quite yet. Johnson’s Withdrawal Agreement will likely be ratified in coming weeks, enabling the UK to legally depart the EU on 31st January. This will mark the beginning of the transition period during which the new trade arrangements have to be negotiated between the UK and EU. The transition period comes to an end on 31st December 2020, with the UK exiting the single market and customs union and entering the newly negotiated arrangements/crash out if no trade arrangements have been successfully negotiated.

If you bother to read the article not just the headline you will see that the 'charge' covers costs and that similar schemes run by the charities themselves also make charges. Charity must by definition be free to the recipients, but ultimately someone has to pay for it.
BTW I love your new icon JHD. A red clenched fist with hard edges, like something out of '1984' or Stalin's time. It reminds me why I usually vote Conservative.

I have read the article. Thank you for the comment in respect of my new 'icon'. Your response reminds me why I NEVER vote Tory.

I have read the article. Thank you for the comment in respect of my new 'icon'. Your response reminds me why I NEVER vote Tory. You are welcome. And please remember that, as I said, someone has to pay for every act of charity and many of the 'someones' who are very pleased to make donations to pay for charities to do their work are people you dismiss as 'Tories'. At a guess, right now it's about 45% of donors.
EDIT: It goes very deeply against the grain to do this but I'm blocking you. I'm more than happy to engage in political debate with practically anyone from now until eternity, but I can sort of imagine the Mods getting twitchy right about now and they've already issued a general warning upthread. If I see provocative posts I will be unable to resist responding - and I want to keep my nose clean! *Sorry JHD.
(* See my other recent post on another thread on the meanings of 'sorry' )

(* See my other recent post on another thread on the meanings of 'sorry' ) How strange to tell someone that you are blocking them. What an odd individual! 😂😂😂 Oh & of course the patronising little bit about the word sorry. Sums it all up I suppose. Very sad. Very sad indeed.

I think we do pretty well on here, compared with a lot of online "debate" this forum is the Eye of Orion! But a reminder is always welcome. I can be as partisan as anyone - or more - but I know people who vote for all the main parties (in the real world as well as online) and they're all decent people and good to know.
I've been on the opposite side of the Brexit debate to my oldest friend and he's often voted for 'the other lot' too. But here we are, still great friends after 40 years - me a fairly 'wet' Tory (former) Remainer and him a (former) Labour Brexiteer and a much bigger 'Boris' fan than I am! Last week we were both on the same 'side' for once, both hoping that Boris can, like you said, get us out of this mess and both appalled by the prospect of Corbyn. I'm just crossing my fingers that now he's seen off Corbynism, Boris can do a Brexit that works OK and then get on and govern as a 'one nation' Conservative - he's certainly talking about that a lot. I'm still crossing my fingers...
