Subspace Rhapsody was fantastic! I loved every second of it. It uses the music to propel the stories and characters better than many actual musicals. All hail to the writers on this one. And if they ever decide to actually write a musical I will happily go see it. I am looking very much forward to this. Not yet available here, but stuff like that I usually crave.

I've been rewatching TNG from the beginning over the last few months, whenever I get a little time. I usually skip the opening credits, but today I let them run a little and was able to hear Patrick Stewart's reciting of the Star Trek opening. But it seems now when I hear the words, "to explore strange new worlds..." I immediately think of Pike and his enterprise. And I smile.

I loved the finale {Spoiler} and it was FANTASTIC to have Scotty introduced. I really enjoyed the actor playing him. Finally, he's being played by a Scottish actor! I do have one gripe, though. Once they knew that Christine was alive, don't you think they should have at least tried to find any other survivors in that saucer before crashing it on the planet?

It was surreal seeing him pop up....then as Scotty. The idea of him being James Doohan in a couple of years..doesn't quite work but hey. Lovely fella. And yes, an actual Scot - or I wouldn't know him!

I'm going to be slightly controversial I thought it was messy I'm not a fan of the re-design and yes I do know what your evoking stop beating me over the head with it. Also Pike's come to save his Girlfriend, Girlfriend isn't 100% appreciative and from then on Pikes deflated and aimless, now I don't know if that was intentional or if Aston Mont or the Writers couldn't agree on a beat change, but for me there's 0 tension in the cliff-hanger Pike could Order Fire or Withdraw with as much emphasis as Did I put a Note out for the Milkman. Also its disappointing as he could've finally had his showcase EP this Season after it mainly adding depth to his eventual successor. The Debut is charming but high-lights the wasted use of talent of the pervious 2 characters and Actors in that position on SNW Still a good season and very watchable with Under the Cloak of War, Those Old Scientists, Charades and Tomorrow And Tomorrow being clear Highlights, Sub-Space Rhapsody defies description. Finished Season 1 of Strange New Worlds. This is by no means a bad series. It actually could grow on me. However, I have a few niggles. Some of them are not really specific to SNW, but were of course also present in TNG for example. I felt this was pretty much Star Trek paint by numbers. We got all the favorite tropes there, including the "strange alien transforms the environment into a castle and we are having a costume party". I am aware that this was there from the start in TOS. Yes. But this also brings me to the second point- I like Easter Eggs and fan service, but this was pretty heavily relying on expanded Easter Eggs and we got Fan Service by the bucket. Big Finish level of Fanservice. Even including the alluded love affair between Nurse Chapel and Spock (again, biologically BS as said above, it makes no sense from a biological point of view). And the last episode.... very common trope. This is actually the same plot as "Across the Spider-Verse" which I watched yesterday (just without Spider-People)! Talk about deja-vu.
All in all, well acted, we get some great characters, the series looks fantastic, they finally dared to go full horror with the Gorn (!!) but even after watching the whole season, this crew has still not built up a real connection to me (as opposed to the crew of the Orville, as comparison).
I am non-the-less looking forward to seeing Season 2 when it comes out for unsubscribed people later this year.
Now debating with myself if I should just dip my toe into Discovery, maybe just for the simple reason to find out how bad it really is and rage-quit.

I guess we have to accept that they will reboot TOS now they've added Scotty to the crew it is inevitable.

So yay! Got an email from Prime today that Season 2 of Strange New Worlds was now up for purchase on Prime. So I bought it. Will now start watching and write my thoughts as I finish each episode. (I am looking forward to the musical episode the most)

Finished Episode 1 of the Second Season of SNW. I fully and wholeheartedly admit- this was the FIRST episode of this series that I really enjoyed. It was FUN. It was full of quirky characters, we got plenty of old-school Klingons (like the ones in TNG and DS9), we got some cloak-and-dagger and plenty of action. I think they took what I liked best about Picard Season 3 (and of course from the TNG undercover episodes) and went to town with it, just with even more fun and less death. I just read that Anson Mount was away for the birth of his child, and I actually did not really miss Pike in this at all. Everyone else worked really well together, and I got some real "Search for Spock" vibes out of this. Yes, many of the shenanigans do not make sense in a world full of strict military Starfleet rules, but as soon as I accepted that this episode was more about fun and games than about seriousness, my disbelief was suspended. I even accepted Spock bonding with the Klingons while getting drunk on blood-wine (even if that conflicts with what we see in the supposedly "later" TOS, this p*ss-up here reminds me more of DS9). Anyways. Now this series actually feels much more like the Orville. I fully approve.

Right. I just watched the Boimler Episode and I loved it as much as I thought I would. Fantasic, FUNNY, creative, cute and well written cross-over episode that makes both Lower Decks and SNW shine. Season 2 really is much more like the Orville and I am on board with that!

Strange New Worlds. The Musical episode. It is gorgeous and glorious. This includes the Klingons. My kind of weird and wonderful.

Gotta finish the season of SNW before I move on to the new LDs, but I was VERY excited to see that the title of 4.01 is "Twovix."

Really not enjoying Strange New Worlds. It's never as bad as Discovery ( and certainly nowhere near as bad as Picard), but it's pretty blah. I'm also not sure who any of these characters are, because they sure as hell neither look nor sound nor act like any of the characters I'm familiar with. (At least, not quite. I think this show may be a trifle Orville-influenced)

Really not enjoying Strange New Worlds.
On the other hand, that memory-loss episode was a cut above.

The is-Uhura-mad? episode wasn't to shabby either. But it's taken a series and a half (with two wacky adventures for Spock) to start coming together. Granted, earlier series took time to find their feet but I don't know if they struggled quite as much as I'm finding SNW is.
I think the Boimler episode might be next.

I think Star Trek works best with ensemble casts, and ensemble casts really need the extra time a full-length season enables. You just... can't afford to devote as much time to each character when you've only got a dozen or so episodes to work with.

I don't know what show you guys are watching, but I have felt that SNW has gotten stronger with each episode since the premier, with only one exception. And that season 2 just killed it, and was better than the first. I agree with Kestrel, I wish they had longer seasons so they could really explore the characters. Would love to see Ortegas get some focus.

Would love to see Ortegas get some focus. YES! Also I think it's interesting/sad to consider how few character-focused episodes some of the TNG characters wound up getting, after all was said and done, despite having so much more to work with. Troi definitely got the shortest end of that stick -- at least Crusher got that one fun episode w/ the shrinking universe.
