Finished Tactics of Defeat yesterday. I went into it completely cold, so I was quite surprised with the different format for the story. It was quite strange to essentially only have Zoe on a recording for the first half of the story (and not really in it). I guess I had forgotten too much of Turn of the Screw as besides the screwdriver itself, I didn't recognize any connection with Deakin. (Maybe I'll listen to that again.) It was quite a gripping story with some nice puzzles, but I do have a remaining question with the ending. How did Ruth get away? What equipment did she use? Thanks. Thanks for listening: {Spoiler} She used the same device she thought had killed Zoe. The sound should be identical though perhaps hidden under the missile explosion. Did she survive? Who knows?! I have just started the first story.I enjoyed The 2nd Doctor Volume 1 so very much and i really didn’t think i would for some reason knowing its part narration. But the first volume really captivated me and listening to the first story is doing the same. what is lovely about this forum is the genuine interaction of some of the authors it is very pleasant especially if criticism is levelled. I do look forward to delving further into the 2nd Doctor stories The Outliers and The Forsaken being firm favourites still got the others to get.

Loved reading the article! So interesting to see some parts of the creative process! Also, Tactics of Defeat was fantastic and that lovely speech by Zoe was the absolute cherry on top of a beautiful piece! Thanks very much - hearing Wendy say my words, especially given what they are was really something in studio. Talking of in studio, here's the actual piece I wrote for Hero Collector on recording the Tactics of DefeatThanks excellent website too

I enjoyed The Iron Maid a lot John Pritchard has now written in my opinion two good stories for these companion box sets. This though was a strange audio in that i agree at one point they use the actors voices but in the next it is Wendy narrating the voices that is a bit of a strange way to do it,lacks consistency. But a great tale.

I cannot praise these stories and the ones before the two sets enough.I do not know if its my own nostalgia or just the excellent casts and scripts and to think i have to wait till 2020 to get volume 3 come on BF😜. In both sets and especially the single releases the teaming of Ben(Elliot)Polly and Jamie is just a wonderful dynamic i really could listen to them all the time and am glad they have been added to the collection of my listening pleasure. Since it will be 2020 before i hear this team again i suppose i will begin on the other Purves/Jean/Maureen ones and first Doctor

Believe it or not I just finished the set.
How brilliant and evocative of the era. It definitely had a feel of the old CCs in being bold and different but after some brief "Wait.." moments I realised that these stories would have been done very similar back in the day.
my "Wait..." moment was on the feathered( Ie accurate!) dinosaurs. Although I know the big moments started happening in the 90s I realised this is Exactly what Doctor Who would do.
Even though the two Dinosaur telly shows were before the knowledge was commonplace Doctor who loves grabbing real science, real history and integrating it into their stories. I love that I found out that the raptors had feathers by Polly observing them using wings as defence tactics. There were many Dinosaurs with wings but not all of them flew.
It's also framed in a way that Polly takes note of it, indicating a scientific curiosity and fascination. Polly is such a captivating Lead in her recent stories. I love her!
and... I need to write her a fan letter. We're missing so many of her stories and seeing her shine like this is wonderful.
If the end of The Dumb Waiter didn't make you at least a little emotional you have no soul. And I mean both the end of the story and the behind-the-scenes stuff.
It was a beautiful early Leela and Jamie story and the script and the reveals were ingenious. But what I loved the most was Victoria saved the day. She was a hero. And I cried when Leela told the Doctor what a brave hero Vic was.
Such a brilliant twisted story. And this one would have been a perfect story to show right before Fury of the Deep. It's a little odd to have such a perfect season 5 story costarring a season 14 character but it really is a died in the wool series 5 tale.
And now we see Zoe. I love Zoe. I am autistic and also was in gifted classes all throughout school and often feel set apart from others due to my outlook on the world.
I'm not quite as smart as Zoe(hahahha) but I relate to the way she sees the world and everything.
Both stories focused on her genius anytime she was on screen. The Pritchard tale was brilliant and I felt exonerated to find that the woman with visions was a real person and that there was Joan of Arc foreshadowing. Ms. Padbury always shines but for someone I describe as Doctor Who's smartest companion she earned it in spades. It was almost like she was a second Doctor Who. With her investigation and theories and figuring out what was going on at the same time as Doctor Who. It kind of reminded me of Jon and Pat in the Three Doctors.
My favourite line is when Zoe describes the villain's necklace "A silver edged black cross... A Cross of Iron" I got shivers. So evocative and so sinister. Delivered perfectly and subtle enough that you can come to your own conclusions. I like to think that somewhere in her memory of either travels or her education Zoe knows. Knows what A Cross Made Of Iron means.
It's my favourite Line.
Zoe stars in two stories of course.
However, the final tale gave our fourth shining star.
I always enjoy Ruth Matheson and Charlie Sato when they show up.
Daphne Ashbrook is Fantastic in a chilling 3 hander that seems like her costar is a fiendish mercenary and a tape recorder but later Zoe(and a passed out Doctor and Jamie) actually shows up.
It was a great surprise and I loved this story for not as Ruth is complicated and Ms. Ashbrook actually finds black and white characters boring. MORALLY black and white that is. She's acting alongside a famous black and white character after all!
I of course love the Lethbridge-Stuarts but I love different UNIT eras especially when the writer isn't afraid of subtle continuity nods and nuance.
And although Zoe is incredibly important in this tale it's Ruth's story and both her and Zoe are really well written and I was constantly surprised and challenged by the dialogue and the actions of the characters. Zoe is a supergenius. I repeatedly say she is the smartest companion and when she is written well it is when she is written as almost the Doctor's equal.
Big Finish has worked really hard to expand on and develop their companions and this whole set is a Fantastic example of that. But aside from that... Zoe felt like a female Doctor Who in both of her stories. You could of put Colin Baker or Jodie Whittaker in the same situation. The dialogue would need to be changed as at the same time as Zoe is like a female Doctor Who her lines are also perfectly Zoe.
But it made me really happy. I don't have a whole lot of second Doctor boxes. because Bill and Pat sets can ne pricey but I definitely want CCs volume 3 for both Doctors!
back to the female Doctor Who idea the cameos of The eleventh Doctor in Destiny of the Doctor remind me of Zoe and her timey wimey tape recorder.
I love Jodie to deatg and I also love all 15 other Doctors but its still so much fun when I hear a story that feels like it has 2 Doctors. Whether it is a brilliant guest star or a companion I love the interplay and dynamics.
