I'm fascinated by post-Time War Galifery, because from the look of the child, it's clearly not the same world that we caught a glimpse of on occasion of in the original series....

I was spoiled about Gallifrey...definitely disappointed about that because that would have been a great reveal.
However was not spoiled about the diamond /bird twist that was a really unique twist on the time loop scenario if I do say so myself.
A great performance by Capaldi & beautiful direction also elevated this episode.
A bit nervous about the hybrid thing? 8th Doctor movie?

I don't understand the point you're making. We never saw any gallifreyan children prior to the revival. What was different?

Well, I wasn't spoiled regarding the reveal of Gallifrey, and I was completely shocked regarding it. At one point I was thinking that the entire castle was the interior of a TARDIS.
I loved this. And incredible performance by Capaldi. I keep wondering where Moffat has been for the past few years. He had some incredible scripts during the RTD years, and then creatively got bogged down through most of the Matt Smith years with overly complicated arcs. This year has been his finest by far.

Wow... That about sums it up for me. Somehow, this has become one of my favorite episodes.
Question/Peculation: Was this a clever way for the doctor to get to a "timelocked" Gallifrey?
I can't stop thinking the first time he went through he was running around in his underwear or nude the whole time.
It is weird that some things reset and some don't.
And once again... I think they need to get a science advisor. I don't think the getting energy from an old body would work because of the loss of energy each time.
Also, I know before I was worried about the hybrid "on my mothers side" thing, but now I have confidence Moffat can handle this.
I agree, the only other actor I can imagine performing this is McGann.
Once again... WOW!

Wow. That was one of the best of the season, and that is really saying something. What did the first version of the Doctor to arrive do though. Did he work out "bird" on his own before writing it, and leave his dry clothes by the fire before spending the rest of his journey naked? And, how did he work everything out when there wouldn't have been any skulls yet, and the stars would be where he was expecting them to be?

I enjoyed it, another good episode. One point slightly unsure on though, was the Doctor suggesting that even before he left Gallifrey, there were legends / fore-tellings about a half Dalek / half Time Lord hybrid, but my understanding is that the Time Lords had no real knowledge of the Daleks before the First Doctor's encounters with them. I could have misunderstood his point though.

Outstanding episode, Peter Capaldi carried a entire episode effortlessly & gave one of the best Doctor performances I've ever seen.
So glad he's sticking around he's given the show that classic Who feel back.
Please don't mess up the finale Moffat, you've written a corker with Heaven Sent.
10/10

JESUS CHRIST, MOFFATT. A more articulate review will follow, BUT BLOODY HELL, MAN. THAT WAS NOT OKAY. I'm on tenterhooks for a more articulate review.
In what way?

Seeing as it's Episodes Three and Four of what is essentially a ye olde The Seeds of Doom-style six-part serial (which for the sake of simplicity I'm going to call Maze of the Shadow Weavers), it really did surprise me. That was so close to approaching greatness you could scratch its surface and still managed to be fun, despite not quite reaching that summit of awesome. I thought it was to a certain degree predictable, yet not unpleasantly so because the plot was well thought out and highly imaginative. I rather loved the Doctor's two millennia old parable about the bird and the glass mountain, what an ingeniously straightforward means of getting him out of an otherwise impossible situation without leaving the audience feeling cheated. Capaldi's Doctor is definitely at his finest here, relying on himself and himself alone rather than the maladroit chicanery of his companion. I really liked this, it was a thinking man's mystery with the Doctor front, centre and in control. Given a very promising Next Time with the Gallifreyans, I wonder where we'll go from here? I hope it manages to trump or at least level with its predecessor for what can be achieved.
We're definitely on the right track here...

I could have misunderstood his point though. I'm with you on this I dunno... Remember the Death Zone in The Five Doctors and the Doctor talking about how neither the Daleks nor the Cybermen were called to participate at the behest of the Dark Time Gallifreyans because they played the Game too well? Extrapolating from that, it seems likely that the Time Lords (or their forebears) would have had knowledge of the Dalek race prior to his first meeting with them on Skaro. They may have been considered one of a myriad of threats back then rather than a significant adversary capable of threatening their seat of power though (viz. The Daleks as the third power in the war with the Great Vampire much like the Balkans to the USSR in the 1960s).

I got a text from my sister this morning. She's a casual Who fan. She likes it but hasn't really warmed to Capaldi. She hated last night's episode. She thought it was terrible. I wonder if it's only us die hards that loved it?

If only the TV guides and newspapers hadn't been told about Gallifrey, that would have been one heck of a surprise.

We were SO CLOSE to the cliffhanger line being "I'm half human...on my mother's side." SO CLOSE.

For me, that was the best episode of the Moffat era and Series 9 is definitely the best series of NuWho. I really loved it.
Thankfully I managed to avoid the Gallifrey spoiler. I suspected it when I saw the word 'home' appear but I still enjoyed the ending more because I wasn't sure until I actually saw it. Next week's episode looks huge. I hope it lives up to the standards set by the rest of Series 9. I've enjoyed every episode except for Sleep No More.

I do think as a dramatic device that the TARDIS was a much more effective mind castle for The Doctor than the one they gave Sherlock over in his series.
