For discussion of news, reviws, interviews, the comic strip etc. Had a quick glance through this month's new one which arrived this morning. There's a BIG interview with Toby Whithouse and he's really being "sold" in it. Makes me even more convinced he's going to succeed Moffat. There's a rather large section, about 10 pages, previewing the next 4 tv eps. I'm avoiding these for the moment as I've found DWM and I have differing opinions on what constitutes a spoiler. No new BF news but the War Doctor audio stories gets a half page article. There's also a full page ad for J&L 10 and the back cover is for the Treolar stories.

There's a piece in DWM I think by Tom Spilsbury that's very critical of the promotion of Series 9. It blames the number of viewers falling on this lack of care promoting the series more than other factors. One line form the trailer is speciically quoted as being stupid to use when hyping the series: "Same old, same old - The Doctor and Clara Oswald in The TARDIS" as it mas the series look stale and a rehash to the "casual viewer". He's also heavily critical of the decision not to promote Davros in advance.
All in all, it's quite a defensive article.

All in all, it's quite a defensive article. I've not seen the article in question, but from your description is it not an attacking article rather than a defensive one?

The reason I'd say it's defensive is it seems a rebuttal to those people - including BBC News remember - who ran with the story about how the ratings are so bad this year and the show is now showing signs of decline. If anything, rather than attacking of defesive, it's deflective - saying don't blame the show or the makers but the promotional wing of the Beeb. I've no idea what like the producers are now on Who but certainly Julie Gardner wouldn't be dictated to by BBC staffers on how to "sell" the show.

Whoever's in charge of promoting the show now doesn't seem to be able to strike the balance of catering for the die-hard fans and keeping a general audience interested. It's ironic that the only weekly piece of promotion now, apart from the Official Website and BF comes from Grimeshaw's Radio 1 Show interviews!

And while it MAY be a thing I'm also getting sick of the "Only specials" "articles" arriving on sites like FTN from "reliable sources". I'm getting really really really fed up of click bait nonsense. Because even when *I* resist it I still get queried on it by people who know I'm a fan so I STILL don't get away from it.

I never read the episode previews, or the comic strip for that matter (I wait for the graphic novel). The Big Finish articles are often a repeat of what's already in Vortex or CD extras and I don't really have much use for the news (already on the web days or weeks before then)/reviews sections so I'm left with about half of the issue coming in useful.

{Spoiler} What it says about the finale is interesting. It sounds like Davros was right, and the hybrid is indeed a Dalek/Time Lord combo. More interestingly, the Doctor already knows who/what the hybrid is. It should also be cool to see the Sisterhood again. I hope they have a real role this time.
I also find it interesting that they haven't announced most of the cast for the finale. I'm guessing that Me, or someone even more surprising will be appearing in the finale. They did say that there will be some kind of shocking reveal in Face the Raven, so perhaps someone (apart from Riggsy and Me) will be returning.

I've avoided the episode previews because by all accounts the last 3 eps are full of massive twists. Moffat's said they can be considered 3 eps, 1 story followed by a two parter or a 3 parter depending on how you look at it. I love the flexible format this year. Too often Who gets wrapped up in neat bows. I love messy contiuity. It's the only way things could be when traversing space and time. BF get the usual good reviews for the last cuple of MR releases but they get much smaller reviews than usual due to the new series and Underwater menace taking up most of the section. This month's crossword is the closest I've come to finishing it without needing to check Tardis Wikia

They basically just say that there are twists that they can't talk about. Also, that next Saturday, you should stay away from the internet until you watch Face the Raven.

Yeah, but DWM - and the Moffat era production team - have a record of giving away too much even when playing it coy. I'd rather go in ice-cold than even know just a bit. BF are guilty of this too - McCoy's recent cameos in certain releases being given away early for one. I want to have NO clue what the premise is, where its set etc.

Davros is a possibility but I just have a strange feeling Missy is more likely to turn up. I'll be shocked if she doesn't. I wouldn't rule out Captain Jack yet because as I said, he was recently mentioned in The Woman Who Lived and an unannounced return would be a massive shock given that he is a fan favourite character many of us want to see come back.

I'm pretty sure John Barrowman has been in the US lately, and he's much more famous and recognizable than Julian Bleach. I just don't think he would be able to return to Doctor Who without it leaking.

Where's the narrative reason for Jack to return? I'd hate to have him - or anyone - just come back because they're a "favourite" so why not do it. Jack would stick out like a sore thumb with the tone and story of this season and the Moffat era in general.
Michelle Gomez will certainly be back though. How soon? No idea but she's a mainstay.
